Iowa won 12-10 over Michigan in the battle of number 1 vs. 2.

For those of us old enough to remember this game, where where you?

I was in the north end zone student section about 5 rows behind the band. Was sitting almost directly between the goal posts.

From our viewpoint we all knew the kick was good the moment his foot touched the ball. It was pandemonium to put it mildly.

1985 was still one of the most fun seasons for me as a fan.
 
Remember that season vividly, especially the 1986 Rose Bowl when Ronnie Harmon suddenly suffered a severe case of fumble-itis. From Wikipedia's game summary:

The weather was overcast and 71 degrees. The UCLA Bruins wore white visitor jerseys, and the Iowa Hawkeyes wore their black home jerseys. Both teams wore Rose Bowl patches on their uniforms. The Iowa Hawkeye helmets bore a sticker with the letters "ANF" for "America Needs Farmers". Coach Hayden Fry had the players wear these stickers to bring attention the plight of American farmers.[13]


* Humorist Erma Bombeck was the grand marshal for the 97th Tournament of Roses Parade held on January 1, 1986. The parade theme was "A Celebration of Laughter."[14]
* Tournament of Roses President Lay Leishman presided over the coin toss. Iowa won the toss and deferred to UCLA.
* Hayden Fry was tied with Forest Evashevski in all time wins as an Iowa head coach coming into the 1986 Rose Bowl.
* Iowa recovered a fumble at the UCLA 5 from a bad snap of a UCLA punt on the first series of downs. In the first play from scrimmage, Chuck Long gave the ball to Ronnie Harmon, who fumbled the ball and UCLA recovered.
* Eric Ball, a freshman for UCLA, ran for 227 yards and tied a Rose Bowl record by scoring four touchdowns. Sam Cunningham ran for four touchdowns in the 1973 Rose Bowl. Eric was in for the injured * Gaston Green, who had started, but pulled a hamstring. This record has been tied by Ron Dayne in the 1999 Rose Bowl and Vince Young in the 2006 Rose Bowl.
* Matt Stevens was the UCLA quarterback. After sharing the #1 QB job with David Norrie for the first half of the season, he eventually lost the starter's job after playing poorly vs. Washington. Stevens did not find out he was starting until a few minutes before the game, when Norrie couldn't play due to an injury.
* Iowa quarterback Chuck Long was sacked four times. A loophole with the redshirting rule allowed Long to play in his fifth bowl game. He is believed to be the only collegiate player to participate in five bowl games.
* Iowa running back Ronnie Harmon fumbled the ball four times and later dropped a pass while wide open in the end zone as Iowa attempted a late comeback. He had only fumbled one time in the regular season.
 
I really remember that one! I was waiting in traffic for a light to change in Des Moines. I started honking, screaming, and fist pumping. People thought I was nuts, but a couple others must have been listening to WHO as well, they began honking too. It was awesome and I will never forget it.

Later than night I called up the hot little brunette that I work with to out with me. She had other plans but went to a halloween party with me the following week. We celebrated our 27th wedding anniversary last June. Take On Me by aha was on the charts then.

I can't believe that was 30 yrs ago. I was in my teens. My sister was at that game with a friend. Her first Hawks game.
 
North End Zone stands, prolly 1/2 to 2/3 the way up, with my younger brother, ColoradoHawkeye, his fiancee and his brother.

His brother piled into our row mid-4th quarter, somehow connected me to memory and found Colorado, who found his way up to where my brother and I were standing.

I almost hurled from mid-3rd quarter on because a guy behind us kept chugging from our bota, which was filled with SnoShoe Grog. He wanted to return the favor and poured about 1/4 of a bota of rum down my throat. Problem was, it tasted like new leather from his newly purchased bota. I had that hideous taste on my brain for days. ALMOST ruined the game!

The guy whose ear almost got ripped off by the falling goalpost was in one of my classes. He had the head wrap going for about a month.
 
My Sophmore year, was in the student section and rushed the field but the goal post were down before I could get to them.

Drove in a van with 8 people to the Rose Bowl, Harmon should never be allowed back to Kinnick . My opinion is he took the cash.
 
Because of the Rose Bowl & Harmon's agents, the FBI did investigate whether the game was fixed. The FBI could not find conclusive proof. Walters & Bloom were indicted. The indictment charged that Walters and Bloom invoked the threat of organized-crime associates in Las Vegas and California to keep athletes in line.

Athletes who balked at signing agreements or later sought to dismiss Walters and Bloom were threatened with physical violence, authorities said. One player was warned that the house of his new agent would be blown up.


The college eligibility of 44 athletes was compromised by the agents, authorities said, including that of Carter, Ronnie Harmon of the University of Iowa; John Clay of the University of Missouri; Paul Palmer of Temple University; Brad Sellers of Ohio State University, now with the Chicago Bulls; and the Bears' Morris, who played at Southern Methodist University.


Harmon was paid more than $54,000 over two years by Walters and Bloom, the indictment said.

That game is so vivid in my memory.....sitting with my Dad in the west stands.....I never saw an Iowa crowd so nervous as Long led us on that long final drive, highlighted by several 3rd down passing conversions. My Dad closed his eyes and said he would listen for the crowd reaction. I watched the north end zone for the crowd reaction, because I had a very poor angle. In those days, when Iowa scored, tissue paper streamers would be thrown by the fans. The kick went up and the north end zone roared first....and then the streamers came down (you can see it on the replay). My Dad was crying and I hugged him....I only saw him cry a few times in my life....I'll never forget that kick. That was the pinnacle of Iowa football, although I think this amazing 2015 team may top it!!!! Stay tuned!
 
I was a Junior in high school, and attended the game with my family.. What a great day, and what a great game!!!!!!! After the game we were shooting fireworks in the parking lot never get away with that now. That was really a great Hawkeye football team, and I loved watching Chuck Long throw the ball.

Harbaugh was a whiner then too, back then they would penalize the home crowd for being too loud what a dumb rule!! He kept backing away till the crowd quieted down.
