3 athletic, incoming OL freshmen over 300 lbs

Ezra must be burning off some of that baby fat. I wonder how many of these youngins come in and think to themselves, what the heck was it I was doing the past 4 years, because what I'm being asked to do now isn't even close to what I was doing in high school.

Daaaamnnn, when I was in high school, the only ones over 300lbs were the lunch ladies.
Explains why they were the lunch ladies.

This fall marks the 40th anniversary of Dubuque Hempstead winning a state football championship (which in itself is unreal that it's been forty years!). A big deal was made in the Des Moines Register and by KWWL's Bob Hogue on the broadcast of the championship game on how big and physical Hempstead's interior lines were. I believe they were in the 230-240 lb. range. Nowadays it isn't unusual for a high school sophomore linebacker to weigh 230. Or a varsity quarterback. If you are a 4-A school and your linemen are only 230-240 lbs they are dwarfed by the opposition.

I worry about linemen coming in too heavy. Then, you have to start by helping them lose weight first before putting on good weight. Seems unlikely that someone is coming out of high school with a "good 300 pounds." Maybe these guys are the exceptions.

I hear ya, but I have to think the Iowa staff is at a high enough level to take linemen (especially scholarship kids) they wouldn’t have to lean up before bulking up again. They’ve had Doyle around long enough to know if a kid fits his criteria or not.

Doyle is good enough to take Ike Boettger from a bean pole (as 6’5” ers go) TE, put 100 lbs on him, and produce an NFL offensive lineman.

Also, take a look at most AlabamaLouisiana/Texas/Florida high school starting OLs. At decent size schools you’d be hard pressed to find one without multiple starters over 300. Those schools put out probably 75% or more of the top 100 OL recruits.

They wouldn't need to drop weight. They would just transition it from flab to muscle. It is not like they would starve them down to 260 and then bring them back up to 300.

Brian Ferentz was 252 his junior year at tackle when I went up against him at City High, we had a guy that was 6'8" 315 too.

I’ll bet anything you got PAWNED. BF is the duke in the chair, you were merely there to entertain him.

Lucas LeGrand's mother lives two doors down from my parents. He would come over in the summer to mow the lawn with his shirt off and my dad would comment to me on how flabby he looked. Kelli, the mother who I've known since grade school, explained that he was in the stage of Doyle's training where they bulked him up, that the strength stage would be next. This would probably have been before his freshman year or leading into his redshirt freshman year.

At the risk of over-hyping the kid on here, Fenske is carrying little to no bad weight. Dude is rock solid.
