2019 is the year

I hate to put this on one player but JB is the key to the whole thing. They main reason I've watched more of Iowa this year than I have in many years is because JB is a great young PG. He leads the team very well and he can shoot so a lot of the those close games Iowa seemed to lose for so many years may start to turn now that we have a PG that can hit FTs. Seriously how long has it been since Iowa has had a PG that can consistently shoot and hit FTs?

I hope Williams sticks it out too. There is definitely an important role on this team for him down the line with his length and athleticism he could play with JB and/or sub for him.

I have to agree - Top half of the league every year (out of 14 teams) and making the dance should be the minimum expectation. I know it won't always happen, but no reason why it's unrealistic to expect it most years. That's basically what we had under Tom Davis, for the most part. I feel that in both football and basketball, a program like Wisconsin might be a good model for the Hawks. Look at them the last 15-20 years, and they used to be garbage. I'm not saying it will be easy, but it's doable.

Regarding Chris Collins, I don't know him or what drives him, but I'd be willing to bet he bolts for a better job when it comes calling. A young, up & coming coach who is coaching at a place that is notoriously difficult to win, and having success.. There will be suitors. But like I said, I don't know the guy - maybe he loves it there.

I wouldn't be all that shocked to see Collins eventually coaching Duke whenever coach K decides to hang it up. K is 70 now, so not sure how much longer he wants to coach. Just a theory, anyway. There's also a saying - you don't want to follow a legend. You'd rather be the guy after the guy who follows a legend.
Yeah that's very true about Collins. He'll be chased after this year I'm sure. I bet your absolutely right about Duke being his dream job so if that's the case I bet he may stick around NW till that opens. Taking NW to the dance this year is a resume builder in and of itself. He's highly respected and rightly so I think.

Speaking of FTs...It goes beyond Jordan.

BE = 100%
PJ = 91.8%
JB = 87.5%

Moss is at 79.3% but was in the mid 80s until the last couple of games. So we have 3 guards this year and should have 3 next year that can close games for us.

Edit - I also think Pemsl, Cook, Kriener and Baer are going to be much better FT shooters in the future than they have shown this year.

Our program is on par with Wisconsin. It's just that they are on a high at this point in time.

I was talking football.

Since 1999 (start of KF tenure), UW football averages 9.3 wins a year. Iowa averages 7.5.

Since 2007 (10 years), UW averages 9.7 wins a year. Iowa averages 8.

Although many in our fanbase think we are on the same level as UW, we are not. It's not even that close.

I don't know that I'd agree with that either. In the last decade or so I think they've only not finished in the top 25 once and I know Alveraz finished strong his last few years

Both Iowa and Wisconsin have their ups and downs. Overall they are the same. 10 years ago they we wishing they were us in football. Hopefully soon they will be wishing they were us in both football and basketball.

Haha are you joking? 2006 and 2007 Wisconsin went 21-5, we went 12-13 in that same span

They are better "right now". The script will flip again. Unless your definition of a better program changes every decade. We look better than Notre Dame right now. But they are still the better program.

I don't care to argue this too much, especially in the Bball forum, but it just depends how long you want to stretch out your sample size.

UW has been the superior program for the last 25+ years. That seems like plenty of enough time to prove they're better.

I saw a minnesota fan bragging on twitter that they have four national champisonships in football. I looked it up and started laughing when I realized their most recent was in 1941.

It sucks to admit, but UW has the better program plain & simple IMO. What happened in the 1980's has little meaning to me.

The thing is, programs rarely rise for long or fall for long. They are pretty much who they are. Wisconsin ha's been up for quite awhile tho. Is it long enough to say they have made the leap to being an elite program? I guess it's possible.

I see both sides of the argument tho. For instance, Nebraska was elite for a long time and have fallen off lately. But I am of the opinion that their elite days are over. They were only good because they hired the right coach and he hung around long enough to bump their status as a program.

There are schools that have it easy and will always be elite no matter what. Like Ohio State, Michigan, USC, and Texas. Then there are programs that will hire the right coach (or AD in Wisconsin's case)and join the party for awhile. One they lose their coach they will come back to Earth. Teams like Wisconsin, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota are on that level.

Wisconsin has been better than us since Ferentz has been here so I'm not sure what you're talking about

But even thru short spurts in that time, we have been better. It's always going to be back and forth between the two programs because they are so equal in every way. They have obviously been better than us lately. That isn't even debatable. The thing that is debatable is if that means they are a better program. And if so, by how much.

They've been a little bit better the last 25 years overall. If they continue to bring in new coaches without dropping off like they have been, maybe they will cement their spot at the next level. It's obviously a difference of opinion on what it takes to change a program's status. In my opinion, Texas is still head and shoulders above us even tho they suck lately. I still think we are a better program than Boise State even tho wins wouldn't suggest it lately.

A lot better

The 2018-2019 will be the year for us to make a deep run into the NCAA tourney and compete for a B1G title. Our only loss from the previous year will be Uhl, and we will get Joe Wieskamp. Baer will be a terrific senior leader for us as well. I don't think Pemsl, Bohannon,Cook, Moss, or Kriener leave in the next two years for the NBA so they will all be here. Pair that with an improved Ahmad Wagner, a sharpshooter in Brady Ellingson, Garza, Nunge, and McCaffery going into either their redshirt freshman or sophomore years. Christian Williams will be a fine backup for Bohannon for the next couple years (if he doesn't transfer). Williams also is an athletic lengthy PG, who actually is a stout on ball defender and helps with the 3/4 court press. Finally, I haven't mentioned the development of Cook who looks like he has the athleticism to be great, just needs to polish his fundamentals, then could be an All B1G big man. I am excited for 2018, but 2019 looks like the true year for us to go deep in the tourney and compete with Maryland and Michigan State as the leaders of the B1G
