Stars matter

I didn't read the article, but the team that is about to win the Nattie is made up of a lot of 3 star kids and just beat a team that is almost exclusively 4 and 5 star kids.

So, yes, stars matter. But they are not everything. Coaching and culture play a pretty big role as well.

NIL and Portal acquisitions are turning HS ratings on their head. The ones who perform are getting the best portal offers and the ones collecting the highest performers and the ones making the CFP. OSU just happens to have both.

I think it just goes to show you that especially high school recruiting is an inexact science. It is so hard to tell whether a kid's game will translate to the next level. Was he feasting on lower competition? Was he just a manchild beating up on regular kids, but does not have the work ethic to accel at the next level? Is he injury prone? Coachable? So many variables.

Now, the top end programs have the luxury of focusing more on proven college athletes that they can buy from lesser programs, rather than rolling the dice on an 18 year old kid from Ida Grove. The top tier schools are using the lesser programs as farm teams.
