2013 preseason 2-Deeps

I thought plewa looked good at fullback during the spring game. Very tall for a fb, 6'2 i think. Lots of pad pop with him

Freed, I'm not sure if you are serious or not, but I will assume that you are. Iowa seems to routinely plug the FB position with somebody that didn't workout somewhere else. There are only a couple of kids under Ferentz that I can remember being recruited specifically for FB.

Yep, I was serious. I really don't know how heavily they recruit fullbacks. I guess it would make sense that not much emphasis is put on them.

Brad Rogers was the last true FB we had until Weisman came along. And Weisman walked on. Before that? Kalvin Bailey, I guess, although he was technically recruited as a "RB". But everyone "knew" he would be playing at FB. What they didn't know is that he would end up not playing at all.

Actually Rogers started out at rb and even got a little playing time there. We have had some good fullbacks over the years but it seems like they are either walk-ons or shifted from another position.

Weisman is good but he has a lot of limitations. I think canzeri will give us the home run threat we need. Weisman will most likely get hurt because he won't and can't avoid contact. I know canzeri is small but when he runs I see a similar back to Fred Russell and he did some good things and was undersized. Weisman probably will get more carries as I was going out on a limb here. Either way I think hill or Malloy actually are the two most well suited for the hawkeye run game.

If they run a significant amount of spread this season Canzeri could have an all conference year like the scat backs at Oregon.

GD would have to completely use him on the outside to do that. Canzeri isn't a between the tackles type of runner. I really hope KF steps back and let's GD run HIS offense.

Was Champ Davis brought in as a TE or a FB? Seems like he was a fullback day 1 I could be remembering that wrong though. Morse was 6'3 He was a tall fullback too. But yea with Iowa not recruiting fb hard and having 2 guys that before last yr at this time the coaches thought could fill that role (Weisman/Rogers) its easy to see having what happened can jam a team up. Good thing this team is loaded at TE. I feel they should use more 2 te sets with this group and put guys in motion more regardless of there being a good fullback or not.

Yes, Rogers was recruited as "RB". Anyone who didn't see him playing at least "some" FB probably shouldn't be trying to post in a "football" forum.

Your statement was that he was the last true FB which would be wrong. He was a RB that was converted because of Coker. I believe the last true (as in recruited to be a FB not changed positions) FB would be morse. But I could be wrong.

also go watch the tapes of canzeri...kids can run between tackles he was just too small his frosh year. Now he is in the 195 range and will have the weight to stay upright. He is not afraid to stick his nose up the middle.

Yeah, Foval is correct. Bob even though it wasn't hard to imagine that Brad would play some FB in the future when he was recruited, her certainly wasn't brought in with the thought that he absolutely going to be a fullback. He literally played RB for for Iowa in his redshirt Freshman year, and they nearly pulled his redshirt off to be the starting RB as a true Freshman due to injury. The entire point of discussion is that Iowa rarely recruits a kid out of high school for FB. I think it is often in the back of their mind, and Brad would have been in the "back of their mind category."

I am aware of the "RB" designation AND Brad's own statement that he would get a chance to play RB.

And the circumstances of his playing RB his freshman year, had they pulled the redshirt, would have been "necessity", just as it was with Weisman.

I just think people make more of the "Recruiting a FB" than is necessary. High school FBs are colleges TEs and LBs in the "Iowa thought process", just as the high school TE recruited by Iowa better be prepared to see the letters "O" and "L" next to his name come sophomore or junior year. CJF was "recruited" as a TE, but played WR in high school, after all.

Has MacMillen been hurt? 3rd in line after being in the program, what, 3 or 4 years?
He had a bad sports hernia a couple years ago I believe. Hasn't been the same since. He'll have a tough time breaking top 5-7.

Finally, someone talking McMillan. I had him pegged as our next great lineman when he was a freshman. I believe he was a starter and was either all big freshman or all American freshman, not for sure. But then he had that sports hernia and had never been the same. You have to think though that if he was good enough to start on the line for iowa as a freshman the talent is there. If he can be healthy for one year, a senior year from this guy could be huge. We are taking a goo line if he has a healthy year
