2013 Most disapointing loss

I found the Wisconsin loss to be the most frustrating of the 4 losses during the season. In that game the offense showed what it was and what it wasn't. The MSU game was a punch in the gut because MSU wasn't fully manifested yet, especially on offense, so I thought Iowa could win by scoring 20 points...and I thought they would. But they were shut down.

So Wisconsin was the most telling of all.

Losing to a MAC school at home is my pick.

This was the only loss that "shouldn't" have been, thus by far the biggest disappointment. MSU, OSU, WISC, and LSU were far more talented teams than the Hawks. On paper these were big losses. On the field they were close losses.

A conference loss is always more disappointing than a non-conf loss BUT I am barely calling NIU a little more of a disappointment than the others.

With a win over a ranked NIU to start the season some question marks would have been erased. If the hawks continue in the 2nd half of the NIU game like that last 20 minutes of first half and win 38-27 then they are undefeated when MSU comes to town.

I think maybe we win one of MSU or Wiscy if we also had that NIU win.

The games that stick in your mind the most are the book-ends - the first and the last. Several people have said they aren't even upset about our bowl loss. I still am, mostly because it seemed to me our team just didn't bring their best effort that day (especially coming out of the gate), and that was our chance to prove we were REALLY making progress from seasons past. It is going to stick in my craw the entire off-season.

As for the first game, beyond losing to a MAC opponent, and all the stupid little things we did to make sure that game turned into an 'L', after losing our last six last year, to lose a game we should have won probably had a lot to do with the surliness and pessimism of a lot of Iowa fans through the season. I still think we look at the season a lot differently had we won that game - and of all our losses, that one was by far the most winnable.

Losing to a MAC school really isn't fun. But the Wisconsin loss was most disappointing for me. Penn St and South Carolina exposed their D quite a bit. Teams with functional, solid WRs can work their defense over.

Wisconsin loss by far, that first half was brutal - so many blown chances to score with excellent field position. That game was incredibly frustrating. NIU = first game, new quarterback made a mistake in the end, their quarterback was lights out. Lots of improvement happened between then and the Wisconsin game, and then it just seemed we reverted. Wisconsin was a good team, but IMO they looked entirely beatable that day, and we blew it over and over. Absolutely the most frustrating game - particularly the first half, that I can remember.

So, in any given season, the lowest rated team we play is automatically the most disappointing loss. Makes sense. I guess if I didn't have to dig very deep into the question, I would blindly choose NIU.

This isnt Russia, you dont have dig deep. They are the only team we lost to we "should" have beat. There isn't really a wrong answer. Its ok to have a different opinion.

All losses are disappointing. Choose blindly.

Apparently, there should be no debate. So, that first half against Wisconsin inside the 10/12 yard line 3Xs with no TDs was just a bad dream. I'm supposed to chose NIU, anything else is the wrong answer.

Yes, debates are not allowed. Delete the whole thread and all the other ones too. No arguing.

I didn't feel as bad about the NIU loss as others did, until they got absolutely shown up by mediocre teams in their last two games. Now it's clear they were a pretender, and the loss hurts more than it did when they were undefeated. But disappointment mostly reflects expectations. I think people were pleasantly surprised by the Ohio State game and didn't really expect to beat LSU or Wisconsin, and when we played NIU many of us expected to be a 4-8 sort of team again. So that leaves the Sparty game as the biggest letdown from high expectations.

NIU, at the time it looked like the better team won. However, now its pretty clear that isn't true.
