@BigWeitz: UAA announces 2013 Great Alaska Shootout field. Iowa, Harvard, Pepperdine, Tulsa, Denver, Indiana State, TCU, Alaska Anchorage. #Hawkeyes

Pretty weak field. I'd hope next year's team has no problem with any of these teams.

That field sucks. Wasn't this tourney a decent tourney at one point?

I thought it use to be. Iowa has some history in it. I don't think any of these games the past few years have even been televised.

Considering all these other "warm weather" preseason tourrneys now, It's been a while since it was relevant. 2003 was Purdue over Duke, 2000 was Syracuse, 1999 Kansas. Iowa won it in '86 and Marble was MVP.

This year's tourney is on CBS Sports Network (same channel the Cancun tourney was on) the previous few years were telecast locally with a few regional sports networks picking up the games (MASN for example).

With the new TV deal with CBS for the tourney, I thought that would mean better competition coming back to Alaska, but guess not.

SID just sent out the release:

UAA ANNOUNCES 2013 CARRS/SAFEWAY GREAT ALASKA SHOOTOUT FIELD

ANCHORAGE (Nov. 24) – University of Alaska Anchorage athletic director Dr. Steve Cobb has announced the field for the 2013 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout men’s basketball tournament.

The 36th annual event will feature Denver, Harvard, Indiana State, Iowa, Pepperdine, Texas Christian, Tulsa and host Alaska Anchorage.

The men’s tournament will take place Nov. 27-30 at Anchorage’s Sullivan Arena.

2013 SHOOTOUT FIELD QUICK NOTES
* Iowa will be the only previous Shootout champion, having beaten Northeastern 103-80 in the 1986 title game … the Hawkeyes also played in the 1995 title game, losing to Duke … Iowa will be the first Big 10 Conference team to visit since Michigan in 2007.
* Harvard will be just the second Ivy League school to play in the men’s Shootout, following Dartmouth in 2011.
* Pepperdine played in the first Shootout, finishing third in 1978 … the Waves will make it three straight Shootouts with a representative from the West Coast Conference (San Francisco, 2011; Loyola Marymount 2012).
* Texas Christian will make its second Shootout appearance (1995).
* Tulsa features former Shootout star as head coach Danny Manning will be entering his second year on the Golden Hurricane bench; Manning was a freshman all-tourney selection on Kansas’ 1984 Shootout runner-up squad.
* Denver and Indiana State will be making their Shootout debuts.
* Alaska Anchorage – the only Div. II team in the field – has won at least one game in five straight Shootouts and 29 of 35 overall.

I thought that Fran had said something about us being in a tournament or some kind of competition which included Syracuse and Texas next year. Is that true or am I just making up history?

Just glad to be a part of these again. Even though it's a weak field, it's a tournament setting that has teams playing at a higher level in most cases. We will have a good chance to win it though.

For a second there I was thinking Maui - which seems to always be a pretty loaded tournament. The Alaska Shootout - yeah, seems like that used to be better as well but that's a field that gives Iowa a pretty good shot at winning that event. I think it was 1995, Iowa played Uconn and Duke up there, so yeah, it used to be better.

The ghost of Chris Kingsbury will be in that gym, popping deep threes and getting on everyone's nerves.

The Great Alaska Shootout doesn't field the talent it used to...they must've made ESPN mad what with their "cold weather" and "wolves and bears" and whatnot...if ESPN can't put their on-air talent in stupidassed matching Hawaiian shirts it just isn't worth their time.

Jeff Moe approves of Chris Kingsbury's tactics.

Your assignment for this afternoon is to dig deeply into the interwebz to find out what Jeff Moe has been doing for the past 20 years, and report back here.
Ready? Set? Go!

Wait...how in the hell did I get Jedi mind-tricked???

Nice work, young Shanewalker.

I especially lieked these parts:

Do you keep in touch with old teammates?
I speak with Les Jepsen and Mike Morgan once a week. I told (Mike) we should start some type of website or at least a blog to keep all the ex-players in the loop to help the basketball program.
HE HAS NOT DISMISSED THE LES JEPSEN TALK!

Best memory? Biggest regret?
I will always remember how well we were treated by the fans and the school. Even if we just rode the bus to Ames for a game it was always first class. … Biggest regret was not body slamming (Michigan coach) Bill Frieder in Crisler Arena. They were killing us and Glen Rice was coming in for a dunk, so I gently grabbed him so the team would not have to watch the dunk on tape for two months … Frieder called me every name in the book. We beat them in Iowa City by 20 points the next game.
MOE MUST BE RELATED TO WILD BULL PUMPSASS!! OR ATOMIC BLEW.

Whew, when I first heard about this I was worried you wouldn't find a reason to **** all over it.

That will be in 2014 in a tournament in New York. Fran mentioned this earlier in the year and it was in the Gazette today.

Iowa is NOT playing in Maui in 2014, to refute another person's post.
