2002 Iowa vs Iowa State

This was Kirk Ferentz's break out season with that first great team. They'd been gaining in wins up to that point every season and I believe was coming off an Alamo Bowl win the season before. Wasn't this Iowa vs Iowa St game a pretty hyped game?

Iowa came into that game undefeated and I remember Iowa St. had Seneca Wallace and was doing well. Also, this game was a night time kickoff. I just remember this game had excitement going into it. I almost felt more hype for that game than this Saturday's game. Anybody else remember that? I think the only difference is that I don't think Iowa or Iowa St was ranked going in to that game but I remember the excitement.

I don't remember how hyped it was, but they played FSU in some Kickoff Classic, or whatever and lost a very close game. They beat us and Nebraska, eventually got ranked in the top 10, and lost something like 6 of 7 and earned the Potato Bowl runner-up trophy. #senecaisthegoat

In that FSU game, Wallace had a hell of a run for a TD where he ran across the field laterally and scored. It was one of those 60yrd runs to gain 25yrds.

Going out of that game, Seneca Wallace was getting Heisman hype. It was the most gut wrenching loss to Iowa St. that I ever experienced. From a rivalry perspective, it may have ended up has a more depressing season for ISU. They were a top ten team and then everything fell apart. Meanwhile, Iowa just kept winning. Banks was second in the Heisman and Iowa was the team that finished in the top 10 with a conference championship.

I always thought there was an amount of irony in the 2002 game. If Iowa had won the game, The Hawks were still going to the Orange Bowl. Maybe if Iowa would have won, the B1G would have pushed for a conference championship game sooner.

I think it was only hyped because it was a night game and was the first meeting on ESPN 2. ISU did have the close FSU loss, but Iowa was coming off a fortunate comeback vs Miami (OH). I think 2006 game on ESPN was probably the most hyped game I can recall from both teams perspectives as Iowa was ranked 16 and ISU was 2-0, but despite a really good game, both teams ended up terrible by year's end.

They were pissed that they couldn't get a one loss Iowa and really pissed that the Orange Bowl got the real B1G/PAC10 matchup they really wanted. But they were stuck with Washington State vs Oklahoma in what I believe to this day is the lowest attended and watched Rose Bowl since WW2.

Also, in the Playoff era, part of me feels better getting blown out by Stanford at the Rose Bowl than getting blown out by Alabama in the Cotton Bowl, which is now played in Jerry's World.

It was hyped and I remember Kinnick was electric. I was still a younger man and drank way tooo much and it got real sloppy afterwards. We almost left at half time and really to this day, wish we would have.

Yep, Iowa never played Ohio St. that year and they tied. I remember Ohio St inching a couple games out by a hair, one being Purdue where they were losing in the 4th they inched out. Ohio St went on to beat Miami in the NC game. Many think Iowa would have beaten that Ohio St team. Iowa had a rough match-up with USC and Reggie Bush.

I know my role. Without an tOSU loss, there was no chance of getting in. A more funny scenario would of been a Miami loss which would have made a playoff in 2003. I still feel 2002 USC was clearly

As InGoodCo says Kinnick was electric especially the first half. I think it was the loudest I had heard it since the great #1-#2 showdown with Michigan in 1985. And the last beat down of OSU in kinnick is about that loud.

But my son and I didnt like the way Norm was playing soft defense to start the 2nd half with a 24-7 lead I think it was. ISU made a couple of key third downs and drove the ball to score to make it 24-14 and you all know the rest of the several miscues the hawks had. A bummer of an ending but the hawks had the great season of the 2 teams.

And like I have said I will take any big 10 win over beating the clowns as I know the hawks will win their share against isu.

It was Carson Palmer and the passing game that really killed the Hawks. We frequently had a fifth DB on the field (usually Scott Boleyn) and still couldn't slow them down. This, of course, took at least one man out of the box and Justin Fargas was the one who really gouged us.
