Iowa added to its 2018 recruiting class on Saturday when Kentucky shooting guard C.J. Fredrick committed to the Hawkeyes. He also reported offers from Indiana, Xavier and Penn State:

The few videos I've seen of him make me think he's a slightly shorter version of Wieskamp.

CJ is 6'4" and JW is 6'6". They do look to have similar games (hit from range, pull up mid-range, good handles and can drive some) but CJ looks more like a pg/sg and JW a sg/sf.

someone definitely needs to transfer now. I feel pretty good that JW isn't going to decommit. I wonder who will xfer? CW, MD? I suppose it's possible Cook leaves early, but i don't think he'll be ready after '17.

Yep. I think CJ is definitely a 2 while Wieskamp is a 2/3.

Help me out guys, who is this guy? Were we on him for awhile? Other offers? Etc.
I must be living under a rock.

I think it was his AAU coach that said Weiscamp will be the starting 2 guard for Iowa next year. That's a big statement in two ways. It says the position he thinks Weiscamp will play and it says he thinks he's good enough to start.

Also would Fran really take a commitment with the blind assumption someone would leave, or has he already had conversations? Going over last year was one thing because he had a backup plan with Connor. But this means he would have to push someone out if it came to that.

PC, coaches have ways of communicating to players on what their future might hold. For example, Fran is on record stating that everyone will get equal minutes on this European trip. Well, if a player doesn't get many minutes, that sure would be a hint. I just saying there are indirect ways; but I think Fran is honest enough to speak frankly to someone, face to face. Wagner, Williams and Daily still have their redshirts. Also, Cook might leave early. What I don't know is if a scholly needs to be available by November when these two kids sign.

Fran mentions Ellingson graduating this year. This kid must be really good for Fran to want him enough to be willing to push Ellingson out as a last resort.

Why are people assuming Fran has to chase someone off the team? And why are people cool with that?

When you're over the limit there are two options. Someone leaves on their own, or you run someone off. That means there is a chance Fran will have to run someone off. The reason some are cool with it is because it upgrades the talent on the team.

I think this is win/win for Iowa. I think the kid is willing to pay his way his first year if a scholarship doesn't open up, and Fran has let him know that if it does open up, it's his. At least this is the word going around. I was really confused at first, but if this is true, that is great. He is a kid who has some very good offers, and I'd bet you wouldn't find another kid with offers like that that would be willing to pay for a year if nothing opens up scholly wise.

I feel like that would be good and bad news. Good in a sense that I don't want anyone to be run off. Bad in a sense that I like the idea that Fran is willing to make something happen because this kid is so good. If he is willing to walk on to come, it could mean that he isn't as good as someone who Fran would bring in at all costs.

Yeah, Josh, it's an absolute. It has to happen. It's just plain and basic math.

Or it could mean Fran has some integrity and isn't willing to run someone off to scholly a player with more talent.

I'm not cool for running any player to open a scholarship. Now to tell a player his minutes or roll will be decreased because of players already on your team .... I'm okay with that. That's being honest so the player knows all his options.
