'18 Kentucky Wing C.J. Fredrick commits to Hawkeyes

Or it could mean Fran has some integrity and isn't willing to run someone off to scholly a player with more talent.

I'm not cool for running any player to open a scholarship. Now to tell a player his minutes or roll will be decreased because of players already on your team .... I'm okay with that. That's being honest so the player knows all his options.

That was pretty much my "good" part.

Running guys off is the ugly side of the business. I am not a fan of it either, but there are times when you have to do it. The way it looks as Dean pointed out is a win/win situation. There won't be a need to run off Dailey, Ellingson or anyone else because Fredrick is willing to pay his first year if no schollies open up.

How can he rather pay a year to go to Iowa than get a full ride somewhere else? He either really loves it here or he doesn't have commitable offers anywhere good. This news is lowering my excitement for sure. I had really high hopes when I thought he must be really really good for Fran to take him with no scholorship.

Reading the article there is evidence from the kid and his parents that their personal relationship is strong, they're Catholic -- I think Fran is too, there is a family tie to Fran back to his ND days, and the kid is going to a parochial school so tuition at Iowa for a year isn't going to be a financial hardship.

Some things to some people are worth more than money.

Where did you see he was willing to pay his first year?

I think this is win/win for Iowa. I think the kid is willing to pay his way his first year if a scholarship doesn't open up, and Fran has let him know that if it does open up, it's his. At least this is the word going around. I was really confused at first, but if this is true, that is great. He is a kid who has some very good offers, and I'd bet you wouldn't find another kid with offers like that that would be willing to pay for a year if nothing opens up scholly wise.
Which begs the question, why is he doing it?

What does catholic have to do with it?

I assumed with wieskamp coming in next year that Ellingson would grad transfer anyway. I kinda thought the same thing with Wagner as well although I'm not sure where he's at with school. I also assumed either Dailey or Williams would leave at some point as well.

Fact is wieskamp is going to end up being the highest rated recruit Fran has ever landed. He has to play

If this is true and if Connor does end up playing both hoops/baseball, this will be a tremendous advantage. Iowa will have 15 D1 caliber players with only 13 scholly's allowed. Even if CJ redshirts or doesn't play much, he isn't impacting what I think we all believe is a cohesive group; kids that really like each other. It preserves cohesion.

Fredrick told me he's not sure how it will work out but he wants to be at Iowa. He would walk on his first year if a scholarship doesn't open up. He could red shirt his first year and then have four years to play on scholarship if he does walk on.

We've all been through these case before. In fact, there was a similar situation last year when Nunge and Garza committed. At the time, we did not know Dale Jones would be a graduate transfer.

Let's see how it plays out.

Some utube vid is out there on this kid and he is a great shooter. But physically gonna need a redshirt, he's playing forward for his high school team. His handles we're not great and footwork on defense suspect. Plus he's not real tall, he's basically Ellingson. The glaring weakness of this team the last several years is PG. Both on defense on offense. Thought we were in the mix for two to three quality PG's. Does someone in the know have any ideal if we struck out on all of them? If we are still signing one that's another player that has to go from current team.

If we are having 2-star prospects essentially walk on now, I would hope that they would at least be able to fill in at PG.

If we were going to go after a 2018 guard I wish we would have tried to get Green from Cedar Falls.

Ask yourself, do you think Green would be willing to walk on for a year if a scholarship didn't come open?

I think Fran is. He has ties to ND. The kid's family is probably RCC. They have family ties to ND at the same time Fran was there. Being RCC is a commonality they would all have together.

The ties you speak of are Norte Dame ties. He isn't going there because they are both catholic.

Some people couldn't understand why a kid would walk on when he has other scholarship offers.

Maybe I didn't explain it well enough but I didn't intend to say he's coming to Iowa because Fran and Fredericks are RCC. I don't know if Fran is that's why I said "I think" he is.

I only intended to say that a common religious affiliation can be a foundation for a strong personal relationship. Which CJ says they do.

It's no big deal. Just giving one possible reason why they hit it off so well.
