14 Spots Open?

The OOC SOS for ISU is over 150 spots better. I get what you're saying but that's a big number. SOS doesn't compute who you beat, it's just how hard your schedule is.

I have no idea what the difference is between a 200 and 300+ nonconf schedule, but it appears the selection committee does. Seems like somebody screwed up by scheduling terrible teams instead of bad teams?

Iowa State fan says "We are better than you because you didn't beat anyone worth of **** out of conference" Iowa fan... "we beat Iowa State"

Really strange they forget that game. Also really odd that they don't admit to how much better the Big Ten is this year than the Big 12. Iowa's SOS and Iowa State's SOS is not far apart, and the main reason Iowa's is lower is because of 3 games against teams 300+. Who knew those teams would be that bad. You can only take care of teams on your schedule.

When your schedule includes 12 games against teams most likely heading to the NCAA tournament.. the schedule wasn't that weak. In all seriousness... who was the best team Iowa State beat in the non-conference season? Florida Gulf Coast? BYU? Drake?

150 spots better is "not that far apart"?

And ISU's schedule included 13 games against team most likely heading to the the NCAA tournament.

This is nothing new. Anyone who has paid attention to the RPI knows how the formula works. If you want to blame anyone then blame the person who made the non-conference schedule.

It's also not apparent to me that Iowa would have been able to win 11 games against non-300 level teams. Anyone remember Gardner-Webb? We could easily have another loss or two had we scheduled tougher opponents.

The way I see it is Iowa is going to miss the tournament because they choked against good teams. Not because of the weak schedule.

Iowa St just played the RPI game better than Iowa, they aren't a better team. We are ranked higher in both KenPom and Sagarin and we won head to head.

The difference is about 100 spots :)

There has to be some kind of metric. Is the250th rpi team any better than the 300th rated team? Well yes, obviously by the formula they are.

I don't discount the Iowa game, Iowa played great. Iowa State is a much better team now, and a somewhat different team as well. The game was also at carver and that makes a huge difference. It's not just the SOS that is the difference, Iowa State has 2 wins better than any win iowa has, ksu and osu.

which of those is a marquee win? maybe wisconsin? but that's using the word "marquee" rather loosely. none of those teams were ranked when Iowa played them. I'd say some of those wins look a bit better as the year went on (ISU, wisky), but none of them jump off the page and make someone say "oh this is an impressive win right here".

and you can't have it both ways. you want to count minnesota and Illinois as resume builders by saying they're quality high RPI wins, but at the same time you want to say that they aren't really all that great and that they themselves don't have very good resumes and that Iowa should be in the tournament instead of them. which is it?

another thing you need to keep in mind. NCAA tournament selection isn't necessarily about fairness. it's about who the committee sees as "qualifying" and having a good chance at making a run. that gives teams that have shown they can knock off high seeds a leg up (IL and MN both beat #1). Iowa's low scoring boring brand of ball also won't do it any favors come selection time if they are in fact in contention at that point.

Disagree. Minnesota has shown that they are more than capable of getting upset first round by a lower seed. Much more so than lucking out and beating a higher seed. Gophers. are. not. a. tourney. team. At least if Iowa goes NIT and goophs go Dancing, Iowa can cry BS and probably be right about doing so.

Almost every NCAA Tournament Bubble Chart has about 8 teams between Iowa and Iowa State. That is how close they are. If Iowa State fails to win a Big 12 tournament game, and Iowa beats Michigan State Friday night. This flip flops.
