#13

and that is not just iowa's trouble. it's any team ranked beneath a team(s). and that is the bias of ranking so early in the season. but iowa controls it's own destiny - strength of schedule is good - if they continue to win, they will continue to elevate.

Iowa's W vs Pitt is looking good. They're knocking on the door of the top 25.

With our bye we could potentially reach the top 10 after next weekend without lifting a finger.

It'll be harder to leapfrog as many people going forward, now that Iowa is knocking at the door of the Top 10, and a pretty easy schedule remaining so not much chance left for "impressive wins" save for the Big Ten title game (assuming that Iowa wins the West), but just keep winning and some teams ahead of us will lose. Still a lot of football left.

Hey guys, just wandering in here…
Is this thread about Mabin or the coach's poll?

Iowa deserves it. They've had a hell of season and are coming off their best performance to date. ESPN even has them ranked 13 in their poll.

Interesting to see what happens with Pitt. They have Syracuse next and them home against North Carolina and ND, and then at Duke. They have a physical team that won't back down and have a WR that can burn any team. They're going to be tough to beat at home

That's the trouble with Iowa from here on out....winning won't elevate us, it'll merely keep us from falling....we'll have to depend on teams above us losing for us to move up.

Then again, it worked last year for OSU....why not for us this year?
A perfect Iowa team is in, an Iowa team with any losses is out. It really is that simple. If Iowa keeps winning by 30+ points against teams they are supposed to beat then they will move up in the rankings. Style points, whether the coach likes it or not, do count in the subjective ranking system and in the objective formula driven rankings (read "computers").

Transitive subjectivism figures into it as well. For example if Iowa manhandles Indiana and wins that game 38 - 7 then there are those writers and coaches who will look at the Buckeye's 7 point win over that same Indiana team and will rank Iowa a notch or two higher then with a 34 -27 Iowa win.

Those writers are under more scrutiny then the coaches so they will start to hedge their predictions if Iowa keeps winning. They will keep voting Iowa up a place or two each week until the Hawkeyes are around #6 or so. If by some miracle Iowa defeats a unbeaten #1 ranked Ohio State in the B!G title game then Iowa will move up into the final 4 while the beat writers congratulate themselves by reminding people that they had their doubts that the Buckeyes were #1 and point to Alabama or whoever the SEC flavor of the week is as the true #1.

In this narrative Iowa becomes the "Cinderella" team of the playoffs. Win or lose they will always be looked at through that lens.

Jon's thread at http://hawkeyenation.com/forum/show...NG-First-Long-Look-at-Bowl-Scenarios-for-Iowa runs through some of the possible scenarios in detail and is a good read.

Style points is why I wish Kirk wouldn't have ended the game with 3 fullback dives. 47-10 just looks better than 40-10.

Not sure how all this will shake out. I believe Iowa will play for the Big 10 Championship. I know Jon Miller believes that means a trip to Pasadena and Kirk would love that. I did see ESPN projecting Iowa vs. ND in the Fiesta. That would be a sweet game. Just win Hawks and shock the Nation.

“When theOne Great Scorer comes towrite against our name, Hewon't askthat we won or lost, But how we got gypped at Notre Dame."

Pitt beating ND would help us out in a couple of areas. With wins, We'll jump Stanford in a couple of weeks and they stillwill be up against ND and potentially Utah. MSU vs OSU of course. Clemson and FSU play Nov 7. Alabama and LSU will head butt Nov 7th as well....and ...of course ISU will beat Baylor this week (or we wait til late Nov for TCU v Baylor), and they both yet to play Oklahoma.

Bottom line, keep winning and we could be ranked somewhere 5-7 or higher even, going into championship weekend. We will be in the conversation!
