11am Games to be Less Frequent

No more morning football? That's Big Ten's aim | StarTribune.com

The BTN can now air games during the 2:30 ABC time slot, which for the past several years was an exclusive window for ABC/ESPN.

This is extremely exciting to me as I have always thought games against crap opponents, e.g. Tennessee Tech, La Monroe, should be afternoon starts so fans can at least enjoy tailgating because the game is not likely to be all that good. And now people driving longer distances don't suffer so bad either.

No confirmation that any of Iowa's games will be 2:30 kicks yet, but TN Tech and Pittsburgh TV and start times will be announced mid week according to Mark Rudner.

One final positive to this is the BTN will now have at least doubleheaders each week and sometimes triple headers, which the network needs to capitalize on the biggest sport we have.

Makes sense, it was silly when the Big Ten Network had 4 games all on at 11, then at 2:30 were showing some badminton replay.

YES! 11:00 AM games in Iowa City make 9:00 AM games in Arizona. The bars don't even want to let you in before 9 so sometimes you miss kickoff.

I never minded 11am kicks, as then I hopped out of bed with football on my mind. But 2:30 ain't bad either. This probably means more advertising profit for BTN.

I dislike 2:30 and later games. It is no fun waiting around all day for the game to start.

11:00 games are the best. Big Ten football is meant to be played in the early afternoon.

I like 2:30 games the best. Gives me more time to grill out, get a little bit more sleep, and maybe catch another game before heading to Kinnick.

Speaking as a season ticket holder, I like 11am games after Daylight Savings Time. It's cold then, so 2:30 games are not the most enjoyable in Kinnick. I like to get up and get to the game on those days.

Prior to then I really like 2:30 games in September/early October when it's usually warm. More time to be outside on a nice fall day and then the sun is blocked on the west grandstands making it very comfortable on that side of the stadium.

I absolutely hate 11:00 games. It has the feeling of watching little Johnny play in a Saturday tiny tykes football game. No college football game should start prior to noon, EVER!!

I also think 2:30 games are the best for the reasons stated above. I also really like the 7:00 pm games when home watching on the big screen. I love the high-profile national game at night. It's just a different feeling & atmosphere. I also like the "butterflies in the tummy" feeling all day with the anticipation of the big game at night.

Ah, only 3 mo away.

In my perfect world the BTN would have a typical schedule as follows:

Game one...11 am kickoff
game two...noon kickoff
game three..2:30 kickoff
game four... 3:30 kickoff
game five ...6:00 kickoff
game six......7:00 kickoff

No dead periods. Always be a game to flip to,from 11 am to 10:30 pm. Throw in the pre and post game shows and you have Big Ten heaven for 14 straight hours.

This announcement is a good start. They should be at minimum having triple headers now with 2 games at 11, 2 at 2:30 and 2 nite games....6 and 7 oclock kickoffs. That will work fine for me.

Why would we stagger kick off times? That would be a disaster for the network to televise. There are 5-6 games in conference each week. Two need to be 11am kicks, two need to be 2:30pm kicks, and one needs to be a prime time.

The NFL is the most successfully marketing TV product in the history of sports and they do exactly that.

This is a good idea to me. On 11am games I leave Rochester around 6 or 6:30am. I'm tired. It's a long drive. (almost 4 hrs). I always get here at the last minute and I have to park right away. No time to buy another shirt or other Hawk item from the Hawk shop. Then I have to run/walk a mile to my tailgate spot to do my 15 minutes of tailgating before heading in before kickoff. It sucks. 2:30 is perfect. I love night games but then I have to get a hotel because I'm too exhausted after the game to drive home.

I am speaking from a Big Ten football fans perspective. A fan with a remote. Staggered kickoffs would allow for a fan to almost have non-stop Big Ten football action the whole day. I have tried following 3-4 games at the same time in the past and the timing for games is very synched up,so timeouts are all similar, halftimes are similar, and finishes are similar. With staggered kickoffs,a fan can go to game 2 when game 1 goes to half, and watch the last quarters of all games, which appeals to me. Not sure why that is bad for BTN. More eyeballs on games seem to be the whole idea.

Wait, is Big 10 Network going to broadcast all of the Big 10 games this year? Why would they have 6 games a week?

They're not. This is just what JHHawk would like. It would never happen & would be death to a network if they did it. I personally would never want to view 8 hrs of Big10 or any games in a row with no break.

11 am games aren't the reason you can't tailgate or stop at the Hawk Shop, it is leaving at 6, if you left at 4 or 5 you would have time to stop at the Hawk Shop or tailgate. :D
