10 Years Later: Looking Back at Hawkeyes' Improbable Win Against No. 3 PSU

Pretty sure that was a 2:30 start back in 2008. So although the game ended under the lights by the time Murray kicked his game winning FG, I don't know if I would call it a night game.

That final drive, starting with the Sash int., was one of those "remember where you were moments." I didn't see the end live. We had committed to 5:30 dinner (supper) I heard Dolph's call of the game winning FG in the parking lot of a Chinese restaurant in Platteville!

My brother in law (now sadly deceased) called me from Omaha later that night asking if I saw the ending. He couldn't believe I hadn't. But it was the best Kung Pao Chicken I had eaten in a long time. Funny how food and beverages taste better after victories.

I remember the game and all the twists and turns of it. But I half forgot about the context of it. Iowa coming off the IL loss and PSU having beaten OSU... I'm surprised the spread wasn't 14 or more in PSUs favor looking back. I mean it was that big of a mismatch. And PSU did what we just did to MD for the most part. They had the ball the whole first half besides that first score we had. Yet ole Parkers D only bent never broke kept them kicking fgs for the most part and the 4th quarter was pure magic. You could just feel it.

Stanzi frozen rope to DJK for a TD in the third quarter into the wind was sweet as well.

I just remember Mitch King just ABUSING one of the guys on their O-line. Dude had about four holding calls against him, not to mention about six more that weren't called. I also remember Penn State didn't bring heaters for their sideline, watching guys hovering together and trying to avoid the wind.

My job had me working in Pennsylvania at the time. At work I not only predicted that Iowa would win, but I predicted the exact score. It was sure nice to rub it in with all the pedo fans there. Historically it's even better because it denied an evil athletic department that allowed children to abused any chance of winning the championship.

He did in Happy Valley in 2011. It was one of his final two or three victories before the whole Sandusky mess broke as a story.

It was funny, or not so funny, how the news broke after they made sure he first got the record win.

Vegas must've leaned toward Kinnick magic -- how was PSU only favored by 7.5 points????

Great article! Brings back great memories! One of the best parts of this is the following year PSU had the revenge angle going. Brent hyped it up in his pregame promo that PSU desired “to make things right”.

Ah nope, just like the 2nd half in 2008, Iowa’s DL manhandled PSUs OL and Iowa won a little more comfortably
