10 Man Rotation?

A lot of coaches say they are going 10-11 deep, Fran has mentioned he's going 10.

Last night, they went basically 6. Maybe 7.
Marble, Gesell, White, Basabe, May, McCabe had over 20 min. Woody was 7th in minutes with just 13.

Another note, even though McCabe and Woodbury are starting, Basabe and May are averaging more minutes per game.

In the preseason Fran is looking at 10-11 players right now, I would bet by Conference season he will get down to 8-9 players playing the majority of the minutes. Injuries will play a factor, but it is nice that Fran has enough talent to survive injuries plus use his depth as leverage if some of the players don't play hard or buy into his coaching.

Just when I'd thought I'd surely seen the stupidest post ever.

It's been 5 games for a guy who wasn't able to practice with the team in the summer, and came in a little out of shape because he had to stay home, and you're already so sure that he's worthless and will never amount anything.

Never said he was worthless, just said he's not worth redshirting and burning up a scholarship for an extra year. And obviously Fran agrees with this.

You're a reporter, grow some balls and actually ask Fran why he isnt redshirting him.

He'll be in foul trouble because he's bad at defense.

I completely disagree with this. He plays aggressive and scrappy, he s always there willing to take the charge, he seems to get jump balls on D a lot, he always is diving for the loose ball. He is no way bad at D. Playing more aggressively will land you some fouls.

But he did do a ton last night. It's those little things that go unnoticed or don't show up on the stat sheets that he does that impresses me most. How many rebounds did he keep alive with tipped balls? How many shots does he alter? These are the things that's going to make Iowa a better team. He gives his all every minute when he's out there. His footwork is outstanding at this point for a freshman 7 footer. Great touch with both the right and left hand. I think he's going to be an absolute force in 2 years. I'm very pleased with his play thus far.

Yeah that's what meant. His stats didn't show a lot but he is a factor when he is on the floor. He means a lot o our team as a freshman.

And to go a step further, it isn't that he is bad at defense, it is that two of our wings have issues keeping their guys in front of them (White and Marble) and it is difficult to guard your guy and stop penetration at the same time. But he is trying to do as much as he can out there.

BINGO

you are overlooking who is playing in front of him, Devyn Marble is getting over 30 mpg, with Oglesby backing him up..
Gesell and Clemmons are splitting the PG duties with Gesell playing the SG while Clemmons is running the point, hard for Ingram to get minutes, as for Red shirting goes Meyers is RS'ing and Uthoff is sitting out due to transferring..
its all about matchups at this time, and Ingram is not a 1 n done player..
who would have thought Devyn would be at the level he is now after the start to his FR year or McCabe for that matter.
oh by the way Fran does have a call in show, why don't you grow a pair and ask him yourself

Who the **** said Ingram would be a one and done player?

And I already know why, why would I need to ask?

Marble
White
Gesell
Basabe
McCabe
Woodbury
May
Ogelsby
Clemons

All averaging 13 minutes or more a game..Gabe will be the odd man out when we face smaller teams.

Glad the testosterone is taking over this thread. From the self-congratulion of GhostBone to balls and more balls. Fun. But, really, I think the general gist--play 10 and focus with seven or so--is spot on.

My thoughts as well. I think we'll see 10-11 players, but it will get trimmed to 8-9 by conf that see any significant time.

I'm hoping that Woody will see more minutes as the season goes on. I feel like Iowa is a better team when he is on the floor. He does a lot of little things that end up making good things happen. He has great hands and is a very good passer.

He has the ability to change the opponent's shots, which is very cool and something not seen at Iowa in a while.

McCabe would get more minutes if in almost every game he weren't in foul trouble...

The nice thing is we don't lose much this year like in years past when Fran is forced into rotation changes do to fouls. May could be the unsung hero of this years team.

The one guy deserving of lesser minutes is Oglesby.

Oglesby deserves more minutes, he is not a bad defensive player, before you scoff at that, just watch him objectively.

He'll be in foul trouble because he's bad at defense.

There is a reason McCabe is aggresive, he has to be because he is not that athletic. Being more aggresive does not translate into more fouls. Think about how hard White plays and see how hard Woodbury plays; neither fouls at his pace.

And to go a step further, it isn't that he is bad at defense, it is that two of our wings have issues keeping their guys in front of them (White and Marble) and it is difficult to guard your guy and stop penetration at the same time. But he is trying to do as much as he can out there.

Iowa's bigs have to protect the rim, no matter how poor the defense is in front of them...Basabe can protect the rim, Woodbury does a good job of it altering shots, Olaseni protects when he is out there, so if McCabe can't take a charge then he does very little to protect the rim.

I have said this over and over, McCabe plays hard and I respect that, but if he can't take charges and/or hit a three then there isn't a lot of reason for him to be out there. Give me more Woodbury/Olaseni with White/Basabe at the PF spot. McCabe has a role, but I am not totally sure it is as a starter. Fran is still trying to find his rotation, he knows his players better than us, so I trust what he is doing.

No, he gets fouls because he reacts slowly and is always beat to his spot on the floor. I agree he is scrappy and aggressive, but those do not necessarily result in fouls unless your not playing under control.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Zach, and think he is a better option than Basabe right now, but he cannot protect the paint worth a darn.
