1-3-1 defense.

Ok so if those goobers from NW can run it that well why can't we give it a shot? That defense is crazy good and will completely take a team out of there offense. Anyone else want to give that a try after seeing how affective it was against us?

Good teams will slaughter a 1-3-1 more often than not. There are so many holes that it should be fairly easy to exploit if you have the talent.

I think teams should be taught man to man first and foremost because good man to man defense has no very little holes if you have the guys who can defend or at least rotate strongly.

Not only was it affective it was also effective. The real question is was it effective because it was affective or was it just plain ole effective with an effect on our teams affect.:D

I think that we could handle that defense with effective post play and passing. We do not have much of an inside threat, so the defense can collapse on penetrating guards (not staying with the post players). I hope that Woodbury and Meyer can help with our current inability to exploit that defense.

Sorry I've been spending too much time in Nebraska and I think I'm getting stupider.

The penetration was terrible, when we did penetrate 3 people collapsed, we need to either be able to hit the 3 or find the back door cuts.

Anybody else think it looked like a whole lot of grabbing going on anytime Iowa drove the ball. thought NW probably had about 200 fouls that game.

To beat the 1-3-1 you have be able to drive and finish along the baseline and move the ball around the court quickly and precisely. Iowa's mediocre ball handling skills were on display last night. Bryce couldn't dribble his way out of a paper bag and everyone looked scared to attack the rim. As bad as this sounds putting a guy like Archie in the game and throwing up alley-oop passes to him looked like it could have worked every time down the court.

Every defense has weakspots but the 1 3 1 is one of the wost zones to run. But when our guards kept on driving into the middle of the zone and having 3 kitties collapse on him and force a turnover nothing needs to be said because common sense should tell you not to do it again. In a 1 3 1 a hi lo offense should be ran because lo backside should be open if your passes are quick and not slow lobs like they were last night.

I noticed this a lot as well. I am suprised that when the kitties started the half court trap that we didn't drive into the baseline defender. More often than not the defense will not have their feet set as long as you didn't screw yourself and gave yourself room from the baseline.

I do not want to see Iowa run that D. A good passing team will shred that D horribly.
Iowa's perimeter passing and spacing was awful. The ball needs to go to the deep wing or baseline. Once the ball is there, they really cannot trap as that would free up the basket. Last night the Hawks kept passing the ball back and forth 40 feet from the basket and cathing the ball on the high wing, which sets up the trap for the D. It was bad and something the coaching staff should have been able to break.

Sadly I don't think Iowa is athletic enough to run the 1-3-1 as effectively as NW. Nor do they have the passion and intensity needed to harrass the ball handlers.

Iowa doesn't have the lateral/closing speed to get out on shooters in M2M, no chance in a 1-3-1. Don't have the drive to get it done.

I dont understand why we play man to man. Our man defense sucks!

playing good man defense is actually easier than zone. zone because of the concept takes a much more intense sense of detail to run correctly because of helping and knowing the rotation and rebounding. man to man is actually much simpler and our guys need simple and we dont have the defensive effort to pull off a good zone whether it is 131, 23, 122, 32 or any other.

We had shooters open in the corners but couldn't get them the ball. The few times we actually moved it around good things happened. A magic defense it is not.

it is actually a good defense with the correct personnel. watch baylor in a 1-3-1 and that is great. you need a guy like jones III on the back end. nw just doesnt have the right guys now and we didnt attack it correctly.
