Iowa: Head Coaching Destination Job For All The Wrong Reasons.

Absolutely. That top 10 class - 05 or 06, can't remember - it really looked like the program was about to go super sonic. I don't know if it was bad luck, a culture misfit, or something else (maybe a combo), but it just didn't pan out.

Iowa: Head Coaching Destination Job For All The Wrong Reasons.

I think something else that muddies the waters as far as evaluating both Ferentz and Iowa as a program is that we are in the unprecedented situation of having 2 coaches since 1979. A lot's changed in the world of college football since 1979. We know the program had fallen on hard times...

Iowa: Head Coaching Destination Job For All The Wrong Reasons.

We are totally on the same page, Northside, but I will say the challenges of keeping top notch in state hoops talent are really the same to day as they were a quarter century ago. Iowa and ISU have both really struggled across coaching regimes in terms of protecting the home turf. In that...

Iowa: Head Coaching Destination Job For All The Wrong Reasons.

Also, I know this one will fall on deaf ears because most of the people I'm ranting at haven't seen the inside of a school since the 8th grade, but UW is also an amazing school. It's always on those "public ivy" lists. Iowa is a very good school - once again, we're all very proud and we're...

Iowa: Head Coaching Destination Job For All The Wrong Reasons.

Also, for the millionth fucking time, do some of you really not understand the difference between Iowa and Wisconsin? I've said it before, Wisconsin is a great stretch goal for us and not completely unrealistic, but at some point you have to come to grips with the advantages they have over us...

Iowa: Head Coaching Destination Job For All The Wrong Reasons.

Yeah, IowaPhan was exactly who I had in mind when I went on my little rant. He's putting on a nice little show here because we're on a (gasp) 2 game losing streak and he thinks he's got us right where he wants us, but: 1) Watch how he posts during the heat of a loss. He's a very small person...

Iowa: Head Coaching Destination Job For All The Wrong Reasons.

There is a parallel universe out there where Iowa did not hire Hayden Fry and then spent the next 4+ decades rotating in a new coach every 3-5 years. As a self-styled Student of the Program, I can all but assure you our win percentage over those 40+ years is < .500. In our hearts and minds...

Iowa: Head Coaching Destination Job For All The Wrong Reasons.

I think this is a very accurate summation! I have my own opinions of who is right/wrong of course, but I think you did a nice job of making high level buckets of where people are at. From where I stand, you need *at least* one of 3 factors to maintain the expectations NC mentions in opinion...

    Sports Illustrated rates all Basketball

I have to agree with that. I think the Clones have the potential to be a major train wreck this year.

Matt Campbell Showing What it is to be a Clown

Frost's tenure at UCF was largely smoke and mirrors. I've dug into it a bit. He might turn out to be an OK coach, but labeling him The Next Big Thing (like many of us, self included, did) on the basis of his UCF tenure was a mistake. George O'Leary had that program really clicking. They are...

Gary Patterson fired after 20 years at TCU

Here is the harsh reality though: Wisconsin is going to out recruit us most years no matter what. The simple fact is, they are sitting on a relative gold mine of in state talent compared to Iowa. And they have no Wisconsin State to compete with, either. If we're going to compete with...

Matt Campbell Showing What it is to be a Clown

Oh, for sure. I am also a firm believer that there is a BIG difference between winning at a place like Iowa than, say, USC. To an extent, good coaching is good coaching...but a certain philosophy and style might be a smash hit at a blue blood but be a disaster at a "scraping at the margins"...

Gary Patterson fired after 20 years at TCU

Here's the thing on that though: the modern reality of recruiting is, once you get into that 3* range, the kid is going to get at least regional attention whether he's in suburban Dallas or Sigourney, IA. As you move into the rarified air of 4* and 5* prospects, that just ratchets up. The only...

Matt Campbell Showing What it is to be a Clown

Sorry dude, but I think you're whiffing on this one. Campbell can coach - what he's done at ISU is unprecedented in their program history. Maybe the Big XII is down but, just like Iowa, the Clones are still a little fish in a big pond and he's still finding ways to compete and win. ISU faces...

    In any other P5 program…

All along all we had to do was be Ohio State - I knew it!!!

Matt Campbell Showing What it is to be a Clown

The irony is, I'm pretty certain that example of terrible clock management was at least a factor in why that play worked. I think a good number of the LSU defenders and coaches were anticipating a timeout there.

    In any other P5 program…

Yes, wholesale changes to our offensive scheme 8 games into the season, what could go wrong? It's always a special moment when 2 big brain football geniuses find each other on HN.

What happened to the Wildcat and all its options???? Especially on 3rd and short.

That may have been me with the #62. I was going off the Football Outsiders defensive efficiency rating, which could be quite a lot different than the ranking you might come up with if you're going off a raw number (like ppg or total yards allowed per game, etc).

Gary Patterson fired after 20 years at TCU

Yeah, if it really comes down to it and I'm being honest, I want to win the West bad. That said, OSU has absolutely laid the wood in some of those title games. If Wisconsin ends up being on the receiving end of a 50+ point pasting while we're sitting back with 10 wins daydreaming about Tampa...

Matt Campbell Showing What it is to be a Clown

Hopefully he takes another job at the end of this season then! Strike while the iron's hot, Matt! If he sticks around, ISU will be a consistent winner. About the only caveat I'd put on that is that we need to see how alignment shakes out. But the guy can build a team, I'm very impressed.
