Gary Patterson fired after 20 years at TCU

If he had those types of numbers at Iowa he could have stayed at Iowa another twenty years if he wanted to. Whelp that’s football!

Just watched Kirk’s post game press conference. Wow, he looked like a whooped puppy………….. also had the scent of embarrassment.

I knew someone would bring this up. Patterson has been living off his reputation the last 5 years. Kirk may be guilty of stubbornness and some arrogance, but I am not sure it is a good comp. The Iowa program hasn't fallen off a cliff or in immediate danger of doing so.
It also bears mentioning that the state of Texas produces somewhere between 400-500 FBS signees every year; Iowa produces closer to 20.

Texas does have 12 FBS schools (5 of them P5) but, if you consider Iowa has TWO P5 schools to support and do the math, I think you'd rather be in Texas and their expectations down there reflect this.

Patterson made his reputation and his top teams based on defense then they joined the Big 12 and all of a sudden he was in 64-58 shootouts with TTech and Baylor. If he would have had the best defense in the Big 12 the last few years he may have had his frogs winning the conference. And he still had decent offenses.

"The Iowa program hasn't fallen off a cliff or in immediate danger of doing so."

It never has been, is not and never will be about "falling off a cliff". KF has secured that level of program status.

For so many of us - for SO MANY years - it's about the FACT (as proven these past 2 weeks - which is routine in 8 or 9 of every 10 seasons) that the Iowa program consistently slides down the mountain. The worst part of that is it's by their own doing - that "stubborness and arrogance" to dogma. We see it on the field, every year, as the jaw-dropping failure to adapt and head-scratching losses to inferior teams.

Sorry dude...the losses to Wisconsin and Purdue were not to inferior teams. Not even close.

Two things here...

1) Regarding Texas, there were only 4 schools I couldn't think of off the top of my head. UTSA, Rice, TX State, and UTEP. I thought that was pretty good, and I thought all of those were FCS except for TX State.

2) When I got stumped after 8 schools, I went to Wikipedia to look up the other 4. While doing so, I was looking at the map showing all BCS teams, and I found something out that blew my g'damn mind. I'm 41 years old and have always been a sports fan since the earliest days I can remember. And for 41 years I had always thought Bowling Green (the university) was in Kentucky. As in Bowling Green, KY. You know, Bowling Green, Kentucky where Corvettes are made.

I've been completely blindsided. I've been lied to my my entire fucking life and I did it to myself...

Good grief, I need to step outside and collect my thoughts. Who the hell knew there was a Bowling Green Ohio and why don't they call themselves, "Bowling Green of Ohio" like Miami of Ohio does? And what's up with Ohio...do they think they can just steal other cities' names if they want? And why would they want to? My childhood has been altered irreparably.

Obviously, ask me again at the end of the year - a lot of football yet to play - but Purdue looks solid. I would have expected a better showing against them, especially at home, but I'm far from shocked to have lost to them.

Wisconsin, within the admittedly lukewarm context of the Big Ten West, I think is actually a very good team. They'll likely win the West (barf) and probably lose to OSU by 4 TDs in the championship game. I'd be surprised if they don't finish up as a top 25 team. Physical and well coached team. They are really comfortable in their identity up there and recruit accordingly. I have a lot of respect for that program even though a part of me dies inside every time we lose to them.

To a lot of people around these parts, "inferior" means "ranked lower than us in the AP". That's because they don't know how polls work.

Here is something wild to think about:

Iowa wins out
Wisconsin wins out

Iowa is likely higher ranked than Wisconsin, but is not in the Big Ten Title Game.

Another kick in the nuts.

Yeah, if it really comes down to it and I'm being honest, I want to win the West bad.

That said, OSU has absolutely laid the wood in some of those title games.

If Wisconsin ends up being on the receiving end of a 50+ point pasting while we're sitting back with 10 wins daydreaming about Tampa or wherever...I dunno, but I can imagine worse fates.

That scenario would probably actually be better for recruiting.

Texas also has LSU, Oklahoma, Okie St coming after that talent

Here's the thing on that though: the modern reality of recruiting is, once you get into that 3* range, the kid is going to get at least regional attention whether he's in suburban Dallas or Sigourney, IA. As you move into the rarified air of 4* and 5* prospects, that just ratchets up. The only difference between Iowa and Texas in this regard is that Texas has a shitload more of such prospects than Iowa, so the recruiting battles are more noticeable.

Point being, whether you're in Iowa or Texas, once you hit a certain prospect talent threshold, those in-state kids aren't going to just leap into your boat. As you move up the talent ladder, you're going to have a progressively tougher fight on your hands and you're going to lose some of those fights.

This is no way directed at you Drummer - you made an innocuous (and true) observation with no hint of agenda...but a significant portion of our fanbase is absolute DESPERATE to minimize the inherent talent challenges Iowa faces. "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard" - yes, I love it, that slogan encapsulates my #1 favorite thing about Iowa football and our program identity, but that is WAY different than "talent doesn't matter". It matters. Like, a LOT. Look at Alabama, that's what you get with talent AND hard work.

Without (a) a significant population base or (b) an elite program history (ideally you'd have BOTH), you're going to face struggles sourcing talent. Those are facts no matter how hard you believe they should not apply to Iowa.

We just got our ass handed to us by a Wisconsin team that was recruited while we were happy in Tampa and they were getting pasted in the B10 championship.

Here is the harsh reality though: Wisconsin is going to out recruit us most years no matter what. The simple fact is, they are sitting on a relative gold mine of in state talent compared to Iowa. And they have no Wisconsin State to compete with, either.

If we're going to compete with Wisconsin, it's not likely to be on the basis of outpacing them in the talent race. On average, they are going to be bigger/faster/stronger than us.
