Does anyone else feel like we are less up-tempo than we were Fran's first two years?

Re: Does anyone else feel like we are less up-tempo than we were Fran's first two yea

I'd say my biggest surprise is on the defensive side. Room to improve certainly, but solid. We just need to get the kinks out of the offense and get some shots to fall. It's going to be beautiful when this team catches fire and we go on a 10-0 type run.

Opponents are shooting an eFG% of 37.3%, that's 12th best in the NATION.
So opponents aren't scoring a lot, and Iowa's D is forcing bad shots (and also the teams they've played aren't that good).

We lack team speed. We are long and lengthy. Look at Marble, Basabe, White, these guys are all long but not fast. We don't have a single guy who I would call a burner. Mike Gesell is not a fast PG. Marble isn't a speedy 2 guard. White isn't a fast 3. McCabe isn't a fast 4. Woody... acutally moves great for his size.

Interesting point. We're not a particularly quick team, nor are we a particularly good shooting team. What we are is a big team. Why don't we attack the post more?

Who do we have that's a proven post scorer on the team?

Who do we have that's a proven jump shooter? I'm just saying we can keep doing what's not working, or try something new.

5-0

I'd say whatever they are doing currently it's working for who they are playing. It might not pass when playing say Indiana, but we are not playing them right now.

I think it is just that the freshmen point guards are still learning and we aren't hitting a lot of shots. I feel like we will end up being one of the more up-tempo teams in the country. But I do think that having less ball handlers on the court hurts the speed. White is a great player but him at the 3 means we have only 2 legit ball handlers and that can slow the game a little too. As we had 3 last year when we were at our best (BC, Marble, Gatens). That is why I think our top grouping of players will have White at the 4 and really be able to get up and down.

I think we miss a lot of opportunties on entry passes. I only caught the 2nd half of last nights game but I remember twice in 1 possession that May had the ball on the wing and Basabe had good position and we didn't even attempt to get the ball inside.

Woody has been very successful when he has had the ball inside. We need to work from the inside out. The more we take advantage of this, the more the outside game will open up.

I remmeber you posted a few days ago Ghost about us not being able to dictate the type of game against Central Michigan and I agree this is a concern. We had to go small to match up rather than use our size to our advantage.

It's kind of shocking nobody has mentioned the loss of BryceC in this thread. Whether it was real or not (based on the statistics), BryceC certainly made me feel like we were pushing the heck out of it everytime down.
I'd take MikeG over him in almost every facet, but BryceC moved that sucker up and down.

I'd expect both point guards (Sapp included) to be more adept at pushing it up when they are seniors as well.

I was berated last night for daring to say that this team does not pass the ball well in the half court.
