The fans are the customers - give them some good answers

I think KF has done a good job overall rebuilding the program and I like KF and how he takes under recruited "athletes" and develops them as football players and students. KF does a lot of things the right way.

But I have to say I also agree with his detractors concerning his snarky replies and non-answers to press conference questions.

I can see he wants to win for his team and himself and coaches. But when you have 1,000,000 fans or more watching your games who are highly invested in seeing 2+wins to each loss and the occasional great season then you have to realize you have "customers".

The fans are the customers now and they deserve a better answer than "that's football".

When a reporter asks something like "What are some of the issues with the passing game?" the customers/fans would like to hear something more than "we have to clean things up". What things, it would be OK to say our route running is not crisp and the jvb and the receivers need to be more accurate in the plays, that the oline is giving good protection, and maybe we can work on certain routes to increase our efficieny"

Football started out along time ago like basketball with some people getting together to play games. It caught on with people watching the games and anticpating the games. If no one watched these games would not be important and they would be like the sandlot football I used to play when I was young.

Ferentz should tell teh fans, "you buy my inferior style of football, and I buy you teh beer!"

It works

I happen to agree with the OP. I'm not coming at it as I'm entitled to answers. It's obviously the coaches prerogative how he wants to answer questions. But then as a fan I'm allowed to voice my dissatisfaction of those answers.

I would appreciate less "coach speak". At times it feels disrespectful when Ferentz doesn't give a candid answer. I realize it's not likely to change but if you want fans to "buy-in" to your program I think it helps if you give fans the perception you feel like you're somewhat accountable to them (even though its not reality).

What you "customers" need to remember is that coaches are not candid about anything because transparency puts them at a competitive disadvantage.

When you guys are working at KFC, if a guy walks in and demands to know teh sekrit herbs and spices because he's a paying customer, do you feel obligated to tell him? No, you say "I'm sorry Mr. Kaldenberg, even though you buy 2 buckets every day, we still can't share that with you".

True, but if the bucket of chicken taste like crap for a day or two, I expect a better response than, "Well, that's chicken"

At least we don't have Mike Leach calling the players girlfriends fat in a press conference as a reason for them playing bad.

I just don't understand the fact that we're expecting honest answers to questions that he already know the answer to. Anyone who has watched us play this season can see how badly the offense is struggling...we don't need our coach to waste his breath trying to sugarcoat what we all can see clear as day.

It will come to a point where, if the chicken sucks, you just deal with it and eat the chicken, or you get your chicken somewhere else. Complaining about the chicken isn't going to make it better.

Actually, no. If they make crappy chicken and we keep coming in and buying it, why make better chicken?

Only time you need to make better chicken is if the customers decide to go get their chicken elsewhere. Otherwise, keep giving em crappy chicken and takes your profits to the bank.

Maybe the fans want to know that they (the coaches) see the same problems. Maybe the fans want to hear the coaches admit it, not just say "that's football" or "that's the ebs and flows". Maybe throw players under the bus once in a while to the fans, maybe it'll change their mentality.

At least it would be better than "well chickens do have feathers" as was the response from a Hooters waitress when I pointed out our hot wings had feathers still in them.
