New Illini coach commits violation on first day?

I was listening to an interview today on the Score, between Hanley and John Groce, new Illini bb coach, and the topic of Jabari Parker came up.
Parker is the #1 ranked junior in the nation, who plays at Simeon HS in Chicago.
Hanley asked Groce about Parker, and Groce said '' we are aware of how great a player he is and will be pursuing him''...or something to that effect. Hanley asked a followup question, and Groce then caught himself and said he cannot comment on unsigned recruits.

I was surprised to hear him address Parker specifically after the first question as I am so used to coaches always going to the standard ''cannot comment on unsigned recruits'' line.

I think Groce messed up,then caught himself. Still, on a 50k watt clear channel station, located in the kids hometown, that is sending a signal to the kid and to me is exactly why they forbid coaches to talk/pander to juniors in High school...had to be cool to hear your name being mentioned in such high regard for Parker, and an advantage in his recruitment for the Illini.....quick,someone call the NCAA!

He's just getting warmed up. Wants the Illini fans to know that he is aware of their great tradition and plans to do his share to uphold it.

Somebody will turn his *** in, that is for sure. Whether it amounts to any actual punishment is to be seen.

i`m sure he crapped his pants at the moment

Ha ha, that's what I was thinking. Even though I don't think it actually will amount to a violation.
I'm sure when he was done someone from Illinois who was with him mentioned it. That kind of thing happens when you do 20 shows in a day. He even did a couple of west coast radio stations. That surprised me.

I know it's been a joke in this thread, but if it's no big deal then why do other coaches not do it?

Talking about an unsigned player is an violation. Why doesn't Fran do it if he won't get in trouble?

His one-time slip and catch was no big deal. There's a big difference between an honest slip of the tongue and a consistent pattern of disregard for the rules. Had he done this on all 20 of his radio spots that day I'm sure it would have drawn more than just some raised eyebrows.

As it is, I'm sure he'll get a nicely worded letter from the NCAA "discouraging" such conduct in the future.
