NCAA Why Not Des Moines

As I sit here and watch these games I noticed all these sites are half empty. So I ask the question would the NCAA rather have 10,000 in a 22,000 seat arena or have a packed arena here with17,000. Doesn't make sence to me why NCAA doesn't come to Des Moines.

I'm not so sure that Des Moines would sell out. Maybe if Iowa and Iowa State continue with their upswings and basketball means something in the state it would be a possibility.

If Des Moines can sell out a Seniors USA open I'd think there would be no problem selling out reguardless of the teams.

I have always wondered why not CHA? But then I think of the lack of adequate hotels to accommodate 4 teams and their fans along with no major airport close by. I wonder if Des Moines would have the same issues.

The problem with the tournament sites have little to do with local support. The prime seats in the lower bowl of the arenas are allotted to each specific team at the site. So in the earlier rounds, the seats that you see on tv dont have many fans because of the travel distances. Unless your're rewarded for a great season like Kentucky (playing in Louisville) or North Carolina (Greensboro). Des Moines would look just like every other city unless it hosts a regional final or final four (not happening).

I don't think there is any way that Des Moines would have the same problems. If Dayton, Ohio can host tourney games, then Des Moines should be able to. I think it may have something to do with the capacity of the Well?

I agree, if Des Moines can host NCAA women's regionals, why can't they host NCAA men's second and third rounds? I hope in the near future we may see this happen.

There would be adequate lodging, they fill Vets for the high school wrestling and basketball.....

There could be but not everybody that goes to state wrestling and basketball stay over night.

Dayton is 4 times the size of Des Moines with a much bigger metropolitan area.

Its the # of hotel rooms within a certain radius of the stadium that is stopping DSM from getting men's NCAA games. I did a bunch of research on it last year when I was sick of seeing Boise getting 1st round games every other year. DSM just isn't quite big enough yet.

This isn't true. Get your facts straight, Jack.

I know the last two caucuses many of the East Coast media were buzzing over the social and entertainment growth DM has made the last few years.
This is true, they loved Centro and the downtown Eastside venues.....

Even had an article in the NYT about the nightlife in downtown DM four years ago....
