my reason for breaking up the classes

it is to make the transition from year to year easier and the loss of talent easier to deal with. a breakdown of;
3
3
3
4
rather than having a
1
3
3
6
means you don't have to rebuild when you lose that class of 6
and you are gambling on that year class loaded with talent vs a sub par year of talent that could set you back a few years, in a down year of recruits you can pick up solid role players to fill in the holes made by the departing seniors,
then the biggest reason their is less chance of defectors due to lack of playing time that you get with a large class.
case in point next year is a loaded class and i am not in favor of having just one scholarship for next year

and no i couldn't just add this to any thread already started as i feel this needed its own thread as it is a important point for breaking up the classes
the talent next year will be a very large improvement over what is leaving added to what we have added the last 2 years, will set Iowa up for years to come and Iowa only loses May next year. if RS a player this fall helps then do it, its not like it can't be pulled if a player gets hurt and the player will be practicing all that time.

Yeah Fran should have yanked the scholly offer from Woodbury and Clemmons (the last 2 to sign) so he could have had 3 to offer in next years class.

So are you saying we should have only taken 4 this year and then had 2 open the entire season next year? I'm sure Fran would ideally like to do this, but he is trying to win now, he can't have open schollies when there are players on the team that won't provide much help (May and Olaseni) next year and try to improve the program.

Exactly. In a perfect world there would be class balance but Fran didnt step into a perfect world here. He needs to get as many good players as possible right now and play the best ones right away.

no i am saying he lost 4 and got 5 now he can save one and RS another to make next year a 3 player class. and its not like he can't pull the RS off if a player gets hurt.

no no no, screw that! Just because they have come off back to back 20 loss seasons does not mean they should not think 5 years out. We need to pass on those extra players so we can get consistent numbers in our recruiting classes. We never have players transfer out, flunk, or never get hurt so we bite the bullet now and pass on a few of these kids so we can make sure 6 years from now we have 3 seniors to honor on senior day.

and do you plan on taking playing time away from for this miarcle 6th player you say we so desperately need, maybe we take time from White or Marble or maybe McCabe or Basabe, the you can always take playing time away from Gesell, Woodbury, Clemmons to make room for this 6th player in this class you say Fran needs so desperately , to get us to 13

Exactly! Way to go Herbyhawk.
I mean, the success of a program is evident in the balance of recruiting numbers class to class.

Honestly I just dont see May producing much anymore because of back issues, loss of confidence or both. He probably wont get many minutes next, which is too bad.

And its not like we are going to only go 6-7 deep so there will be minutes to go around as it seems it would be beneficial to play 9-10 deep in Fran's system. Im convinced that we havent seen Fran's complete system yet as he just hasn't had the horses yet to go balls to the wall. He will have those horses starting with the 2012-2013 season, no need to keep the horses in the stall.

If he is to RS anybody I actually kind of hope it is Gabe. He could have used it this year and I would bet that Meyer and Woodbury are better developed as true freshman than Gabe will be in the fall.

Well Meyer needs to RS anyway, right? Heck, you seen how small the guy is? He needs at least a year to work out and put on some muscle.

There's a better than good chance the 6th scholarship gets banked, so our class breakdown may very well look like this:

2
3
3
5

...not a big discrepancy from the OPs ideal scenario.

We are not in a position to turn away quality players. We shouldn't be turning away anyone that can help us at this point. These things tend to take care of themselves with player defections, injuries, etc. If we find ourselves with a slightly unbalanced roster we can live with that.

the players we will have next year without adding another player;
pgs Gesell 6'2 fr / Clemmons 6'1 fr
sgs Marble 6'7 jr/ Oglesby 6'5 so / Ingram 6'3 fr
sfs White 6'8 so / May 6'5 sr
pfs Basabe 6'7 jr / McCabe 6'7 jr / Meyer 6'10 fr
cts Olaseni 6'11 so/ Woodbury 7'1 fr

now you tell me who other than May, who will be the only senior, do you take playing time away from and its not like the 11th, 12th and 13th players are going to get 20 plus minutes a game in playing time.
so please tell me why we are so desperate for the need of a 13th player, that if he gets lucky will see the floor in a blowout, i just don't see it,
with a rs shirt of the incoming freshmen there is no way it affect the immediate success of the program.
we wil have a solid 2 deep rotation of height and talent to go 10 deep, which in my opinion will be something we have not had in years

Herbs, I don't think anyone sees any real problem holding on to the scholly for next year, unless you can sign a world beater. If you do, then maybe you are able to red shirt Clemmons or Ingram, and I could see Olaseni getting red shirted if he doesn't develop.

Herby is bodyslamming every one of your arguments. I had one typed out but saved myself the embarrasment of herby speak.

Olaseni wont play much if at all. Basabe, Meyer, Woodbury, White and McCabe will be more than enough to man the 4/5 spots.
Next question. I think that was a question even though it was punctuated with a comma.

I agree with 136 that Olaseni is not going to get many minutes next season.

If he is outside the core rotation would like to see him RS.
