Iowa High School State Dual Pairings

So for 3A, you don't qualify for State duals based on your finish at Districts? This is new, correct? It used to be that if you were 1st or 2nd at your Districts, you qualified to be in the dual tournament.

Thanks for the update. I'm still curious to see if the State Dual tourney takes a hit in attendance now that it will be held on a Wednesday in Des Moines.
(Versus Saturday in CR)

Since the dual tournament is the day before the individual tournament, how are some coaches, that have kids that are slated to wrestle on Thursday, going to handle their lineups? There could be some tough calls there.

Agree 100%. One coach I know has a team who should do very good at the State Dual tourney and traditional tourney. He is most likely going to hold his state qualifiers out of the Dual tourney until at least the Semis or Finals.
It will be interesting to see how other coaches approach this scenario.

this format has its positive and negatives and until it happens I am not going to judge this new format. hopefully it gets more attention than it does after state but if none of the top kids are wrestling it won't matter

That is a crazy format for sure. So much has changed since my team in the late 90s. I am sure it will work for the individuals as it is all they know. It would have been tough on me for the amount of weight I cut, but that was also before the weight cutting rules became more strict.
I am all for getting the team duals more attention. It was one of my favorite memories from high school. Second behind walking out to the mat that is the craziness of the individual state tournament.
Good luck to all.

So, does that also mean that everyone that wrestles at the Traditional State Tournament will get an extra pound weight allowance? I am assuming that anyone that participates in the dual tourney will get an extra pound, so everyone else should too, right?

I live in Minnesota and they run their state tournament this similar way and have for a couple of years. I'm originally from iowa and had never seen the state dual team in the iowa setting but since I've been in Minnesota and seen this way its a pretty neat experience. the difference between minny and iowa fans wise is that minny is geared more for the team and iowa is more for individual. so I'm not sure how the iowa fans will like it...but I like the way minny runs their state tourney...although they did just change their 4 day format to 3 last year...it is alot of wrestling for those who qualify individually. the only time I saw the team aspect get in the way of a state champion was in class a team finals last year Jackson,mn 160 cooper Moore bumped up to 189

sorry acedently pushed post....but cooper Moore bumped up (weighed in above 162 for team and wrestled #1 at 189 for frazee,mn kody sorensen. cooper was beating him in the third and Sorenson threw him to his back for the pin. the dual meet ended in a tie and cooper Moore injury defaulted the Indy tournament due to a concussion....Sorenson went on to win the 189 title....Sorenson now wrestles for NDSU and cooper has signed with UNI. I know someone mentioned a coach sitting Indy qualifiers for the dual tourney...but I've never seen that here in minny. they put their best on the mat to get the win.

I have some family in MN. Some of my cousins were on a small school state championship dual team a few years ago. Both of my cousins qualified individually as well. One of them actually forfeited an individual match b/c of the short turn around between sessions with their dual team. I thought is was the dumbest thing I've ever seen. Wrestling is an individual sport. That tournament was constant wrestling for 4 days when I saw it. It was absolutely nuts. I love Iowa's but the MN state tournament was quite the show.

As someone who wrestled in both the state tournament and the dual tournament, I hated the duals. Didn't even want to go. I always had a heck of time making weight in general and for the duals it was brutal. After losing at the state tournament there is zero motivation to go to practice and make weight the the duals.

Guess I'll wait to pass judgement until it's all over but my first thought when I found out was disbelief. I can't imagine a coach wrestling his qualifiers in the duals the week of the tourney. For me the biggest reason would be injury. Naturally some kids are cutting more weight than others so that's a factor, as well as who they would face in the dual, but I'd worry about an injury more than anything.

Don't know much about Des Moines seeded fourth, but the top three in 3A will have nearly an entire team qualify for the individual tourney. Bettendorf and SE Polk just wrestled Saturday and there were several tough matches. A couple matches that had two ranked kids went into overtime I believe. As a coach why would you subject your kid to that the day or two before the individual tournament?

When I wrestled we had a couple light days of practice right before the individual tourney. So much weight is put on being an individual state champ that I see the semis and finals of the dual tournament being a joke.

Might we see a Cory Clark-v-Devos match up twice in four days?

No not a chance in H E double hockey sticks. This has got to be the dumbest thing the IAHSAA has done since I have been watching the sport. You can bet that most coaches will sit there state qualifiers in the duals and wrestle JV kids.

Think about this in the quest for his 4th state title (if team seeds hold true through regional duals) Cory Clark would have, #2 Eric DeVos first round of state duals, #3 Jack Hathaway second round and #5 Jacob Woodard in the finals.

Wont happen if you want to see Cory wrestle show up Thursday for the first round of the individual state tournament not Wednesday.

Oh and couldnt care less how Minnesota runs their tournaments this is Iowa.

spot on clark won't risk it nor should he have too

i don't know how they should schedule this tournament no one is ever going to be happy with what they decide

I've always thought that a weekend in between districts and state would be the best scenario.

I am waiting to see how National Duals turns out this year. I think having State Duals like a month before State or so would work really well and would draw a better crowd.
