Mike Gessel

Then you have the other side, you had a guy predicting that Gabe would avg. 8 pts. and 8 Rbs at worst, and possibly a double double, before he even played a single game.

I think a lot of people are going to expect a lot out of Gessell and Woody. Like most FR I'm assuming they will show flashes of their potential, and then the next game barely show up. That is the deal with most FR (except top 25 types, and even they can struggle).

To be fair, the poster predicting a double-double for Olaseni was roundly mocked by everyone on this board, including the folks that were predicting a 20+ win season. I'd hardly call that a "side"-- more like a lone lunatic.

My expectation for next year is that we're only losing two guys who can really play at the D-1 level (Gatens and Cartwright) and we have replacements lined up for them that we should feel very confident about (Gesell and Oglesby). Add a legitimate post presence that we desperately needed against Purdue (Woodbury) and whatever you get out of Meyer, Clemmons, and Ingram, and you have the makings of a mid-tier Big Ten team. That's all I want. I'm not expecting NCAA tourney-- more like 17-18 wins. If we were to go from 11 wins to 14 to 18 that would be a nice little progression.

I would estatic if Mike could come in and be like Trey Burke of Michigan. Like Gesell,Burke was rated in the 90-110 range overall last year, and he is just playing super at pg for Beilein. Now, he does have a lot more help around him,but to me,he and Zeller are the top frosh in the league so far.

Now, as for Woody, a comparison to Zeller is not really fair,as Zeller was a top 15 rated player vs to 45 for Woody,so not expecting that kind of impact. Big guys take longer. Meyers Leonard was top 30,came in last year, played behind Tisdale, struggled some. Then this year,he has added muscle, and is a world-beater who has risen to #7 overall in mock drafts on ESPN for the 2012 NBA draft. He is that good.

If Woody can develop over his frosh year,by the 2013-2014,the Hawks should be poised for the much needed tourny bid, with a run ,with Melsahn,Marble, and McCabe in their senior years. Fran needs to keep it on that schedule,so that in his 4th year,he makes the tourny, and we can extend him out another 4 years.

i am guilty of the Gabe expectation but it was based om him starting not him being a bench player
it also was based solely on who elso was going to start with him
this a very short handed team, somebody has to score and rebound

but getting back to the expectations for Gesell or Woodbury can actually be up there but in the long run they won't have to carry the load
Gesell will have Marble and Clemmons to help
Woodbury will have Olaseni and Meyer for help in the middle
then you have Marble, White and Basabe probably starting with them
Oglesby in my opinion will be this teams Jeff Moe to be the 3pt threat
May and McCabe will provide the muscle and energy off the bench
that is the biggest problem this team has, not enough quality depth
sorry Brommer and Archie just don't do it
White, Oglesby and Olaseni are developing
with good muscle weight they will get better
also on Woodybury the news out on him he now weigh 245 lbs
i doubt he will get pushed aroung like Zeller @ 220 lbs

Ogelsby is suitable replacement for Gatens. Unfortunately, I fear that might also be on the defensive side where Iowa has had one of the worst 3 pt defenses in college basketball while Gatens has been playing on the perimeter.

That is why I think you might have your list a little backward. Ingram and Clemons are very important for Iowa's perimeter defense. While Ogelsby will be a valuable player to extend the defense with his shooting, what Iowa really needs are some guards that can get out and pressure shooters. Having watched Ogs over the first group of games, it doesn't look like his strong suit.

Remember he is playing against high schoolers. Not even close to a D1 team let alone a B1G team. He will be a great addition no doubt but temper your expectations.

You actually won't get ripped for this because it's an obvious point that pretty much everyone understands.

ther one thing people overlook that hurts the perimeter defense is the lack of a post defense
this team has lacked a solid post for years
too many time you have a guard that is needed to guard the outside leave his spot on the arc and give help defence in the paint
as we saw against Purdue there were way to many in the paint floaters made
this is where somebody 6'10 or taller helps stop those kind of shots
the arc defense will improve with a true post presence
no more guards dbling down in the paint on defense they can actually spend more time on the arc

Some posters on here see ptl video and assume guys will be amazing. PTL is a glorified YMCA Rec league. MG is a stud high school PG and will be a good player at Iowa, I just have a hard time believing it will happen his Frosh year.
I watched him play against Corona last night and I have been a Hawkeye for 40 years. I have seen every player Iowa has brought in during that period and I will say this, Gesell is the best PG I have seen coming to Iowa including Oliver, BJ and the rest of the pack. There is no question in my mind that if he were at Iowa today, Cartwright would not see the floor accept for a spell here and there. Hasn't played against D-1 talent? He played only D-1 talent over the last 3 AAU seasons and was one of the best against them. I am not annointing him the "Star" of the show next year, but Marble will be a two and May will play very few minutes.

I like the fact that he attacks the basket! HE has a step back jumper, but he is also able to attack the rim. So he is a tough guard and also he is a good ball handler.

I am not expecting top 25 ranking next year. I think the freshman will be a HUGE addition to our team. They will give us even more depth. The guards from Michigan & Indy will be HUGE athletic upgrades. Meyer & Woodbury will be a nice addition to the post game and allow basabe a chance to get more 1 on 1 chances.

Overall these recruits are going to add something special to our team, and they will be instant impact players. It will also help that our Freshman this year will have another year of experience.

We should be around .500 next year!~

Strong endorsement. Did you attend this game?
Hope your evaluation is spot on.

I cannot be more excited about the incoming recruits, all 5 of them are going to be solid players. I have not met them all but I got to meet Gesell and Woodbury, first impressions these young adults seem like good people and come from good families. We are going to love having these guys on the team and representing the university.

Then add in Olaseni with a year of practice under his belt, hopefully White gets stronger, Basabe getting to play next to a true Center, Marble turning into our big time scorer and next year could be a lot of fun.

Next years team is going to look completely different and the exciting part of it is the roster will be full of talent. Talent that will be able to compete with anybody in the Big Ten.

Yes. SS was killed on the boards. Corona has two D-1 football players playing the 4-5 and they were brutes. Gesell did all he could but without the strength on the boards they were screwed.

He created quite a buzz here and even though he tried to do it all in the last 2 minutes, he was remarkable. Like a columnist here said, he has the best BB IQ he had seen. Another local newspaper writer compared him to Mike Bibby when he played HS ball in Phoenix. The other thing that I noticed was his muscle tone. Most HS players don't develop like that until maybe their soph year in college. His arms are cut and he has a race horse build. Never seems to get worn down.

Is there any chance that Marble would continue as the starter at the PG position next year to give Gessell or is Gessell absolutely going to get thrown into the fire as a true freshman?

I never said he doesn't play against D1 talent. I said he isn't going against a big ten team. Also those 2 d1 football recruits are just that, football recruits. I don't know a ton about them but do they have any big name bball programs that have offered? I also stated MG will be a good player for Iowa I just think a lot of fans have way too high of expectations for incoming freshman. I think it's fair to give the new guys a year to get acclimated to D1 bball before we expect a lot from them

I think Marble will play just fine at the shooting guard position.

I wasn't worried about Marble. I wondered if it would benefit Gessell to come off the bench the first year. Of all positions, the PG is probably the most difficult to start as a true freshman and it's obvious some here forget how big of transition it is from high school to the college level.

Look for Gessell to struggle as a true freshman and probably make significant improvement his sophomore year, similar to Marble as it just takes most players a year to get used to the oppositions talent level at the Big 10 level.

In a perfect world he could redshirt the first year but it isn't. He might start off coming off the bench but if he is this good he will easily crack the starting lineup by the end of the year. Fran will put out the ones that give Iowa the best chance to win.

Its this kind of thinking that is going to be the cause of some major meltdowns on this board come next year when the incoming class, especially Woodbury and Gesell, struggle a bit.

LOL, OK, gotcha.

I can guarantee you I will not be in any sort of a meltdown mode...ever. At least not till Fran takes a team loaded with pro talent and barely goes over .500 two years in a row while continuing to coach like a disinterested and frightened fat cat. All while being arrogant about it.

I do not expect to make the NCAA tourney next year.

I do expect that Iowa will have a roster of players who are actually deserving of big ten scholarships for the first time in about 5 years.

Seriously? Meltdown? Are you kidding? Iowa bball has had four straight losing season. Expectations aren't that high buddy.

why is it every incoming recruit to Iowa needs to redshirt
lets face on the AAU circuit he played sg and was overlooked as a pg because of Paige and he also played in the shadow of Woodbury
the fact a out of state sports writer compared him to Bibby speaks volumes especially when he was the Home Town kid
redshirting is for unranked, 2* and low 3* kids that are true projects
top 100 kids or top 50 kids are not projects
they will struggle early but as the season goes on they have the high BB IQ to learn on the fly
Trey Burke was a 3* on rivals and is playing well for Michigan and they have more talent at the present

current stats
13 ppg
3.2 rpg
5 apg
2 topg
33 mpg

i would hope Gesell would be has good as a 3 * or better
