Why DM?



One of the most idiotic threads to date. "... DM-ites have no way in hell of creating a college atmosphere." What do you expect from the Hawk fans here in Des Moines. At least we had butts in the seats. I was there with three of my friends. The crowd wanted to get into it but there was nothing to cheer about after about the 10 minute mark of the first half. What were you expecting? And the crowd at Carver would have been so much more energized? I give kudos to the Hawk fans for showing up.

Were you at the game? It was sad. The crowd was bad, but the team was worse...
 




Dear Lord, the crowd had nothing to do with the outcome of the game.

I saw a lot of Gold in the stands, I promise that if they had made it a game they'd represent.

If I were there, I wouldn't have made much noise either. You look kinda stupid screaming your head off when you make one of two free throws so you're only 29 points down. :D

I don't know what the hell happened to Iowa basketball fans. I really don't. Sure, give me all the reasons -- unhappiness with Mr. Davis's last years, unhappiness with the way Mr. Davis was run out of town, the Alford abomination, Pierre Pierce, the Lick abomination, the junior high walk-on who played PG a couple years ago, lack of talent, etc., etc. All lame excuses, frankly. If you really support Iowa and the program, get behind them, in good and in bad. Get to Carver. Get to Wells. Get to any of the out of state arenas that are close to where you live.

Iowa has a decent coach in Fran McCaffery and talented kids who are playing hard. They deserve the support.

And as far as playing in Des Moines, I think it's a fine idea. It's a road trip without playing in a totally hostile arena. It should be good exposure for the program in central Iowa; it would be great for the three in-state schools plus another -- probably Creighton -- to play a round-robin Thanksgiving tournament there.

I wasn't at the game, but it didn't seem like the Iowa fans in attendance were making much noise even when it was only a 15-point deficit. THAT is when a crowd can pick up a team and make a difference. Once you're down 25+ the crowd can't do much.

But the fact that we demand that the team do something to get us off our a**es is what's discouraging. Any fanbase will quiet down when down 30. But do you think that good crowds just sit on their hands when it's still a 15-point game? The crowd picks up the team long enough to spark a quick run, and all of the sudden it's a ballgame again.

I was there too. Creighton set the tone very early and the crowd never had a chance to get involved. Iowa fans got loud once when we scored five unanswered but then CU scored right away and killed it. After that the Hawks never really gave anybody the reason to cheer.

Exactly. Duke, UNC, etc play "neutral" games in their home state. Its a way to improve your RPI without having to go on the road.

In fact, if Creighton wins the MVC, this blowout loss may actually help Iowas RPI more than a blowout win at home over a RPI250 team.

I am just home from the game. We were out-hustled and out-played. CU was a step ahead and more hungry all night. McDermott is a baller. He's far better than Basabe or Gatens or May. Like it or not, it's true. They played strong D all night, too.

Maybe next time.
 


Playing the game at Wells Fargo is a good idea, but maybe not again until the program is a little more on solid footing.

There is no buzz about Iowa BB, mostly because the product has been so inferior for so long. Today, unfortunately, proved that. Getting smoked by 30 by a mid-major is not indicative that Iowa will be relevant anytime in the near future.

If Iowa BB was doing well, the place would have been packed. I thought the turnout was pretty good considering the game was televised and it's a lot easier to stay home and you can at least change the channel when things start to get out of hand. That is not how I feel - but I'm afraid a lot of people do feel that way.

I'm not sure what the inside of the new practice facility looks like, but I'll bet you it looks nothing like the inside of Wells Fargo based on the shooting I saw tonight...
 




There are aspects to this thread that either have to be a put on, or its a magnet for the clueless.

I think its a good idea to play a game or so every year or every other year in the largest metro area in the state and a place where Iowa can make good inroads in season ticket sales.

I also think Creighton executed real, real well in this game and they are a better basketball team than Iowa is at this point.

Lastly, there are some that hope to play in post season tournaments again, such as the NCAA tournament. You don't play at home.

False. Have you not heard how good we're going to be in 3 years? Only a bad fan wouldn't cheer for this team considering how good they may be some day.

There it is, by the way there are tens of thousands more Iowa fans than Drake fans in Iowa's largest city....

This was close to a home game for the Hawks, unfortunately a very good Creighton team showed up with fans. They are certainly more than just a MVC team. In my opinion they are definitely top 25 material. Can't automatically count the Mid-Majors out anymore, Look back at he last two Final Fours and National Championshp games...

Anybody remember when the called the Missouri Valley Conference The Valley of Death, when they had Cincinnati with Oscar Robertson and Louisville with Wes Unseld and Butch Beard, and the Maury John Bulldogs with the belly button defense...

Creighton certainly looked like they belonged in The Valley of Death Sunday sfternoon....
