The Open Mat new high school rankings

Yes great looking class..any idea who might be in the next class coming in ..hope we can land Mccaluey and I'm sure are some Iowa studs also ..

Damn, fulsaas. Scrolling down through the weights I'm worried about the talent in PA and NJ. Hard pressed to find a wrestler from either one of these states.

There is always talent in PA and NJ but it doesn't really worry me that much. Until Cael can figure out how to get the most out of his recruits it won't matter. Plus, the Iowa kids always go under the radar and I like it that way...

Are you from Iowa, fulsaas? I think Cael will do all right out east. Of course, I'm biased.
Having wrestled out there. What happened with Cael and the 149lber at PSU? My bad.
The name escapes me at this exact moment. Bubba Jenkins?

Yes, I am from Iowa born and raised. I lived out west for a while and some other places but have spent the majority of my life somewhere in Iowa.

Don't get me wrong, I think that Cael will do pretty good out there. I think that he will consistently have a top recruiting class and be a fixture in the top 5 teams. However, I think that he has a lot of growing as a coach before he get to that elite level. To me he is not a top 5 coach yet by any stretch.

It sounds like he and Bubba Jenkins just didn't see eye to eye on some things when they got out there and now Bubba will not be wrestling for them next year. I think tha the main hangup was that Cael wanted him to wrestle this year and Bubba wanted to finally take his redshirt and heal up a little bit. It is a tough situation and hopefully it works out best for both of them.

In my post I was also referring to the point that a lot of Iowa high school kids get overlooked coming out of high school. Without the athletic association allowing them to travel to big national tournaments this will continue to happen at no fault to the kids. However, year in and year out teams like Iowa, ISU, and others continue to build programs using hard working Iowa kids that continue to improve and are hungry to make that name for themselves.

interesting to see Knight in the rankings and no Matt Riley.

I know what you're saying but this should really come as no surprise. Evan Knight has 2 state titles to his name and Matt does not have any yet. I know that Matt has beaten him a couple of times but Evan has come through when it counted including head to head last year in the state finals. I have no dog in this fight and think that it will be interesting to see how it pans out again this year!

I think that Matt is a name to keep an eye on in the spring signing period for colleges. I think that you'll see names like Matt Riley, Walt Gilmor, and Sam Upah being looked at by D1 schoools in the upper weights. Unfortunately, Praska of Cresco decided to play football because I think he could have been a great D1 wrestler...

Well we should get two more matches out of these two great Iowa talents one being this weekend at districts and the other as a possible state finals rematch.

Where is Praska going to play football?

Interesting choice considering he has beaten Blythe, who seems to be more well known.

this is the ONLY reason and during the summer a lot of iowa kids are working with their fathers on the farm and aren't able to travel as much to freestyle etc.

Praska will be playing D1 football next year at South Dakota University. I think that football is more of a passion for him so it's hard to blame him. I do think that he would have had a great career in wrestling though.

Blythe will be a football player too and most likely at Iowa. Luckily the Hawks are sitting pretty good at HWT right now with Rasing, Johnson, and Pendelton already in the room and Telford on the way.

As far as in state Iowa kids for next year I'd keep my eye on the likes of Rinken, Caldwell, and Krumweide from Waverly, Tanner Hiatt and Tanner Weatherman from Ballard as well as guys like Brody Grothus, Elijah Sullivan, and Caleb White among others. I'm actually more excited about the prospects of this years Freshman and Soph classes than juniors.

Nationally is a little harder to figure and guess at this point but there are some great names out there. I know that McCauley will be a big name and I know that Iowa will be right in the thick of it for him. Other names to keep an eye on include Chris Phillips, Morgan McIntosh, Jake Waste, Jade Rauser, etc...
