What's your starting 5 at the beginning of the B1G season?

Name your starting five and first off the bench... I'm torn between May & Marble. With less pressure, Iowa having a more experienced and deeper team, I say (hope) that May will be improved and more consistent. I think that they both will start on and off, depending on the match ups. But I am going with Marble as the main 3 with most of the starts. May will be the first off the bench. Aaron White will be second off the bench.

Cartwright
Basabe
Gatens
Marble
Brommer

On Iowa!

I'd agree with that, barring injuries. I'm excited to see what Marble brings to the table this year from the wing.

Uhhhh, the 5 that play well together at the beginning of a game. From there people that play off of each other. Since I'm the dick in this question, predicting starters with so many variables is an asinine question. Let's wait until some games have been played.

Beginning of the season isn't really a challenge, its the end of the season that is going to matter.

Here is my best guess at the starting 5 to begin the season:

PG - Cartwright
SG - Gatens
SG - Marble
PF - Basabe
C - Brommer

End of season:

PG - Cartwright
SG - Gatens
SG - Marble
PF - Basabe
C - White

Cartwright
Gatens
May
Basabe
Olaseni

is my guess as to the starting 5 by BT season, White will never play the 5 spot, Marble will be the 1st off the bench or May will be depending on who wins the starting sot at the 3

White at center?

If White is playing the 5, we are in for a long season.

Do people think Olaseni will be able to physically hang in conference play this year? Not saying it's impossible but it's tough for freshman true big men to step in and play a major role. I'd be surprised.

My thoughts on him starting have as much to do with the people he needs to beat out as it does with his actually skill level at that time.

We don't have a legit C on the team. Brommer fouls more than Glen Worley travels and Wade Lookingbill throws a pump-fake but with less talent, Archie is going to pull his labia before the season starts and Olaseni is too young and thin to do any damage at the C position.

That leaves us White and McCabe as the only players with any decent height on the team. I love McCabe and his attitude on the floor but the game still seems to be too fast for him right now. White is a legit player. He may hurt us defensively but he creates a matchup nightmare on the other end.

12345, I could see your lineup situationally but there is no way you can expect that lineup to do anything but get absolutely abused on the inside versus a team with a decent frontcourt. It's just too short/thin.

I don't know Erek Hansen was pretty thin and lead the Big10 in blocks and started 63 games

I think Brommer will get the most minutes at the 5, followed by Olaseni. I agree with Hawkeye12345 that Archie will sustain a wrist sprain opening a bottle of Gatorade and miss half the season, so he is a non factor IMO. Cole averaged 10 ppg and ~3-4 rpg, so if the three of them can chip in for something north of that production, we will at least break even.

Olaseni is a thin dude, but he runs like a deer. If we can get teams into transition, Olaseni will be a tough guard for most 5's. I also think Olaseni, with some coaching, can account for a couple blocks and bothers, which are as good as buckets IMO.

people seem to be judging him on the lack of stars,at 6'10 possibly 6'11 as it has been posted on other site and listed by one recruiting sevice, as well as impressing in the one on one coaching that is allowed, he will be more than capable of playing the center spot, and this is "basketball" not the WWE OR FB, i suggest you go check out the scrimmages on saterday before the game you might actually learn something

I certainly hope he didn't receive any coaching this summer,at least not by Fran or his staff.

His SENIOR year!

He redshirted in 01/02. He then went to Kirkwood for his "freshman" year in 02/03, he didn't start a single game when he returned to Iowa in the 03/04 (Soph yr), he started most of his Jr yr (04/05) and he was the Big10 Defensive POTY his Sr year.

He was ineffective for the first 3 years following high school. Erek is a very good comparison for Olaseni in many ways. I expect Gabe to contribute his Jr/Sr season and anything he contributes over the next two years will be bonus.

I think it will be;

Bryce
Gatens
May
Melsahn
Brommer

Devyn and Josh will backup the guard court.
McCabe and White will backup at 4 and 3.
Archie and Olaseni will backup at the 5.

Minutes in the Big Ten season will be earned in the non-conference season.
I look for some surprises, like maybe Brommer and Archie playing big roles.
Seniors need to step up.
Looking forward to it,but Hubbard will be missed.
