Does it bug you when....

.... coaches or the media refer to college athletes as "kids"? I personally can't stand it. It just sounds weird. These are young adults now. Anytime one is held responsible for making adult decisions, good or bad, they shouldn't be referred to as "kids", IMO. They aren't kids, they are adults.

Many times if they are referred to as children, they can act like children.

I used to not think this because being called "kid" puts them under the rule of coaches, but I do agree with you now. Probably because I'm that age and hate being called a kid.

My parents still call me their kid. You're never too old to need to be guided by parents and mentors. It doesn't mean you're not responsible for your own actions, it's just a reminder that you're not above reproach.

18-20 year olds are kids. Its not derogatory.
Would "young men" be more agreeable?

no, i don't mind it at all. besides, relative to them, they are.

i have caught myself referring to guys younger than myself 'kid'.

i think more than anything it is an expression.

I agree about the term student-athletes. Almost anything is better than that. Hell I wish someone would call me a kid!

It doesn't bug me. They are younger than me so they are kids!:)

I understand your point Melrose, but as an older person it is real hard not to think of people in their teen's fresh out of highschool as anything but kids.

Well...Unless your Hugh Hefner.

It doesn't bug me, but you know what chafes my butt? Burlap briefs. And really burns my butt is a 3' high flame. Wow, this is fun.

In the same respect though, your never too old to need guidance from someone, for example, a younger person who may give guidance to an elder.

YES!

Especially, if a person is in their 20s, they should not be referred to as 'kid'.

Have to admit I refer this age group as kids ... Not meant in a negative light... To me, they are kids ... Just means I am getting old!
