Finding the 'Best Four' DB's

Kirk talked some about the changes in the back end, and Hyde at Safety...here are some of his comments from the exchange I had with him, following by a few of my thoughts:

Q: How important is it to your scheme for the free safety to be rock solid...is that more preferable there even if you might be greener at corner?

Ferentz: Yeah. There are certain positions on the team...Free Safety, MLB, center and quarterback, those are positions where its more cerebral, there is more mental responsibility. You are responsible for some other people, making sure they are on the right page. We got comfortable with Bret being back there. My kodak moment on him was when we took him to Michigan during his redshirt year, but he was sitting in the locker room studying his notes getting ready to play. There are more responsibilities back there, so that is a part of the equation. You have to be able to get to the boundary, you have to come up and tackle. There are some challenges. We want to make sure we have the right guy there. For us to function, we have to have someone helping us out. Norm talks about James Morris last year, vs the spring. James really accepts that responsibility and does a nice job with what checks are out there. That is a part of that position back there and we didn’t get a chance to see Tanner Miller in the spring because of his surgery. He is still unknown back there. We think he has a chance to be a good player but we have a lot to learn.

Q: Does it make it easier to move Micah to free when Prater is on the other side, maybe being able to roll some free safety help over for the other corner if he is not as experienced?

Ferentz: It’s always nice to have two corners coming back that are good players, but it eases it a little bit. One thing I know is that we have two guys that have played well in conference. Now we have to figure out who the next two guys are to go in, finding the right four guys back there.

Q: Sort of like how you try to find the best five on the offensive line?

Ferentz: Very similar. You want the best five on the line and the best four in the backfield. It’s about as simple as that, but there are some positions where not everyone can play, and that is part of the equation.

As Kirk was explaining this, it reminded me of what he had said in the past related to finding the best five offensive linemen, regardless of position, and then plugging them in, which is why I followed up with that question.

Here is how I see things going down this camp and maybe into September...If Lowery/Castillo proves to be a more consistent performer at corner than Tanner Miller is at free safety, then Hyde will play free safety. If Miller shows competence and the staff is confident in him at free, then that allows them to slide Hyde over to CB.

Very little of the decision to play Hyde at FS this year will be a factor of how well he looks there...it's all going to be a weighing of the risk/reward factor with the would be start at CB vs what Tanner Miller gives them at FS.

If Miller is adequate where Lowery or Castillo scares the crap out of them, that might tip the balance.

However, I think Miller is really going to have to show some things in camp...he is going to have to be lights out not just physically, but mentally, as Kirk has described that position in the quotes above. Iowa has been more content with playing softer corners, and giving the underneath stuff if a QB can execute it, but they absolutely want zero success deep across the middle against them...don't make it easy, don't give up chunks, make teams earn a DRIVE...10+ plays to score...nothing easy. Because more often than not, the other team's QB is not going to be that patient and a drive will stall.

Last year just happened to the be the year of the QB in the B1G, and a lot of teams had good and accurate throwers...not to mention Tarp and Nielsen being out the last four games that matched up against three offenses that are content with taking the underneath stuff.

I think this is good. A lot of moving pieces could make for some good competition.

I think Hyde has a great year at either position. Hopefully he can get the ball in his hands many times.

It could set up that Iowa does not face a decent passer until the Penn St. game. Jantz if he wins the job is a little bit of an unknown and a Todd Graham O could be scary, but Sunseri was inconsistent at best under the stache. The 'best four' scenario could well play out until the 5th or 6th week of the season without costing Iowa a game.

I am not worried about Lowery/Castillo they will be fine I am in agreement with Jon where Hyde plays hinges on Miller with regards of playing the best 4.

I think the "best 4" quote is very telling. Knowing the man-love Parker has had for Miller, I expect Hyde and Miller to be the safeties.

What I don't get about what Jon is saying is the implication that our SS spot is "locked up."

If Iowa opts for its best 4 ... then Hyde and Prater are an obvious top 2. To add an extra constraint, Castillo has reportedly developed into a more consistent contributor ... however, he's also a guy who definitely isn't safety material. Also, both Miller and Lowery are guys who have the talent-level to be in the top 4 ... the only thing that they're missing is experience.

The guy or guys who I think things really hinge on are Bernstine and/or Sleeper. Are one of those two really going to be able to "lock down" the SS spot? If so ... then maybe Jon's scenario might play out. However, if not ... then suppose that Castillo and Lowery prove that they can hold the fort at CB. Furthermore, suppose that Miller proves that he's ready to play at a VERY high level. Then I would believe that it's more than possible that Miller might come in and hop Sleeper at the SS spot.

If I were to have my guess, our "top 4" in the secondary by mid-September will be Prater, Lowery, Hyde, and Miller.

That's my gut feeling too. If Miller wasn't injured during the spring ... then there wouldn't have been a question about his positioning on the depth chart. However, since he was ... he's going to have to make up ground development-wise.

It seems as if Bernstine's name is rarely mentioned, yet when he's out there, he makes plays. What's the deal there?

I don't really understand the Bernstine thing either. I remember in 2009 he was ahead of Spievey on the depth chart until he got injured.

Yes ... he was ahead of Spievey back then. However, he hasn't yet managed to recapture that level of consistency since then. Furthermore, Spievey really took off and his level of play far surpassed the original expectations of the coaches.

I think it was Prater he was ahead of in fall camp, correct? Then had the terrible ankle break, and seemingly has never fully recovered. The back 4 of the '09 team was good...really good, particularly w/ Spievey essentially shutting off 1/4-1/2 of the field.

As for the top 4, it'll definitely be interesting to see how things play out. I wouldn't be surprised if Sleeper hangs on to the SS spot. He's supposed to have fantastic athleticism and if it weren't for Greenwood and Sash, he may have seen the field earlier. I'd prefer Hyde stay at FS and they stick Lowery, Bernstine or Castillo at the open CB spot. I think Hyde's athleticism, experience and body type make him a natural FS, and his experience should be invaluable. There's just something comforting about having a FS w/ experience, even if it was at CB. Regardless of who is in the final line-up, this should be an athletic and talented back 4, and hopefully the competition promotes stellar play.

I'm wondering if Lomax might see some action this season? Is he considered the 5th CB after Prater, Castillo, Bernstein, and Lowrey?

If Hyde remains at safety, then once Lowery improves his consistency, then you're looking at Prater and Lowery being the clear top 2. After them, Castillo is a consistent, solid #3 guy ... however, I could definitely see more dynamic players hopping him. Thus, I wouldn't be shocked at all to see a TR FR move to the #3 spot by the end of the season. Lomax or Campbell could definitely be one of those guys who has the dynamicism to make that sort of move on the depth chart. And that would be terrific because we're going to need to replace Prater after this season.

regarding Swanson, this will be his 4th yr on campus (RS JR). Hopefully, he's made great strides. He's Academic all-big 10 so he's taking care of business in the classroom.

Lowery will be the one to watch IMO. He has a fantastic edge rush, no doubts there. He is probably faster than Hyde or Prater and that is saying something. It's going to be a lot like the situation last year when Hyde took over for Spivey. Early on Hyde made some some mistakes in coverage that caught him a lot of criticism. Just the learning curve taking it's natural course. The one thing that probably kept him on the field is that fact that he is a sure tackler, maybe the best on the field given his size. He wrapped up the ball carrier and if he didn't bring him down then Sash had time to come up an seal the deal. I haven't seen Lowery tackle enough to know if it will be him or Castillio. I think the coaching staff will be more forgiving of some lapses in coverage early on than they will be of missed tackles. One thing you can count on with this coaching staff is an emphasis on the basics. If either of the new corners shows competency in the tackling phase then they will get the start and Hyde will stay at FS and maybe we will get to see some chemistry develop like we saw with the Hyde/Sash combination last year. Hyde's development as a play maker has been great fun to watch and it could go up exponentially if he get's to stay at FS. I really hope that either Castillio or Lowery can step up at CB.
