Finding the 'Best Four' DB's

maybe we'll catch lighting in a bottle with Nico Law and/or Jordan Lomax and one (or both) will be a freshman phenom in the defensive backfield. I guessing they may contribute on special teams if not in the D-backfield rotation.

Does anyone know for sure if Anthony Hitchens is 100% a LB now? Could he play SS if no one else steps up for that position?

I could see Hitchens being used as a LB/S hybrid player as I'm thinking Kirksey wins the WILL LB position. If Miller gets healthy and can get up to full speed I would love to see a Defensive Backfield of Lowery, Prater, Miller and Hyde. It would have good speed, athleticism and size.

If Hyde remains at safety, then once Lowery improves his consistency, then you're looking at Prater and Lowery being the clear top 2. After them, Castillo is a consistent, solid #3 guy ... however, I could definitely see more dynamic players hopping him. Thus, I wouldn't be shocked at all to see a TR FR move to the #3 spot by the end of the season. Lomax or Campbell could definitely be one of those guys who has the dynamicism to make that sort of move on the depth chart. And that would be terrific because we're going to need to replace Prater after this season.

You could see Hyde at fs, Miller at SS, and then Prater, Lowery/Bernstein are most likely the top three CBs.

It will be nice to have flexibility to play 5 DBs again. Iowa played allot more nickle/dime in 08 when Prater and JB were viable 5/6th options to put out there.

I think we will see that more this year.

I think that we COULD see more 5+ DB sets. However, part of the issue there is that our starters will still have to prove that they have down our base scheme first.

The tough part there is that we're going to be playing A LOT of pass-oriented spread teams early in the season too. Thus, right when we're going to be wanting to get our guys "broken in" to execut our base D ... we're perhaps going to get pushed more to execute our nickel/dime looks.

I agree, would like to see that especially with some of the inexperience at LB's, I really think that will be a big help, I think we saw the beginnings of that in the Missouri bowl game with the extra DB's.

Without reading any of the rest I'd say that Hawk fan in Texas guy has to be high on the list.

I'm wondering if Lomax might see some action this season? Is he considered the 5th CB after Prater, Castillo, Bernstein, and Lowrey?

I would think Law would get the consideration as well, I don't know about Lomax. I think he's a redshirt candidat/ ST guy, but not in the rotation quite yet. Campbell in the same boat perhaps.

More so than 3-3-5 or 4-2-5 sets, I see Iowa running quite a few 3-4-4 sets this year with a guys like Hitchens, Kirksey, Sleeper, and Miller playing a hybrid OLB/Rover position. We could see a lot of this is there is any issue with the #2 DT position.

I seriously hope not, other than last year at MSU 3-4 has been almost completely ineffective for Iowa as they won't send more than 3 on the pass rush.

Its pretty much allowed the oppositions QB to have as much time as they want.

Other than vs. MSU and Missouri, when did we run 3-4 last year?
