Interesting stats under KF in B1G play

@BTNStatsGuy was throwing out some interesting stats on twitter last night so it got me thinking about some Iowa stats/records under Kirk. The following are ONLY Big Ten play stats/records.

Iowa is 53-43 in Big Ten play under KF.
Iowa averages 24.93 ppg on offense
Iowa averages 21.49 ppg on defense

The 3 stats below are real telling to me.

Iowa is 35-5 when giving up less than 20 points.
Iowa is 1-20 when giving up 30 or more points. (PSU 2002 only win 42-35).
Iowa is 17-18 when giving up 20-29 points.

It seems 20 is the magic # for Iowa on D. Give up less than that and we'll win.


Most points scored..62 vs Northwestern 2002.
50+ points in a game - 4 times - Minnesota 2005 (52), Minnesota 2008 (55), Northwestern 2001 (59), Northwestern 2002 (62).

Most points allowed..49 vs Michigan St 1999
Iowa has allowed 40+ points 5 times. 0 since 2000.
Fewest points scored in a win..6 @ PSU in 2004.

Iowa is 21-27 on the road
Iowa is 32-16 at home

I guess the most surprising stat to me is the 53-43 record in Big Ten play...what happens to that if you remove the first two years...I think we won 3-4 games those first few years, right?

Almost every team are going to have stats that mimic this. Of course, if your team keeps another scoring in the teens, most likely in college football they will be successful. Those stats are right on par with where they should be.

Of course these stats are as you would expect. And that is what is so surprising to me. There is only 1 outlier in the 30+ category. You would think in a 12 year span, we would have more than 1 win when giving up 30 points. I would wager, nobody in the Big Ten has a worse winning % over this same span when giving up 30 points per game than Iowa (4.7%).
 




I very quickly looked up each team in the Big Ten's # of wins when giving up more than 30 points in Big Ten play from 1999 on, and indeed Iowa's 1 win is the lowest. Here is what I found (there could be a couple of mistakes, I did this very quickly).

Mich St - 7 wins when giving up 30+
Illinois - 4
Northwestern - 8 (4 times they won when giving up 40+ and 1 win when giving up 50)
Minnesota - 6
Wisconsin - 7
Ohio St - 2 (its worth noting OSU rarely gives up 30 points in a game win or lose).
Michigan - 7
Penn St - 3 (again rarely gives up 30 points in a game)
Purdue - 7
Indiana - 6

Based on some of the responses in this thread, I think you will be surprised to see how many times teams do win when giving up 30 or more in Big Ten play. Not only has Northwestern won more than any other team, but they gave up 40 or more 5 times and won. That is astonishing.
 


i think the moral of the story yet again is that we almost never have a high scoring offense. there are many reasons to that: not taking chances with turnovers, run dominant offenses, etc.
so, we like to play the games close. that comes back to bite us sometimes, but more often than not keeps us in pretty much every game.

Yea, good point. That is kind of odd.
