Bluder must have a small travel budget

Does Bluder only get reimbursed for gas money when it comes to recruiting? Not one player outside of the midwest. While colleges recruit all across the country, Bluder and co., seem to simply rely on a car drive away. Honestly really don't care about women's basketball, and really still surprised she is even there. A couple of good years but very average for the most part during her tenure.

What? She has done a pretty good job overall. She had a couple of down years but most times have been top half of big ten.

Women's bball is a lot different than boys bball. You could take a team of all Iowa Girls and fair very well in college bball, where as, most times with the men you wouldn't.

I think Bluder has done a solid job, not great, but solid.

Bluder has posted a 189-123 (.606) record at Iowa ... Average

Up to this point, I agree. But given the squad that we currently have, and our incoming class, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see things take a BIG upswing very soon.

Incoming class:

Samantha Logic, Racine (WI): #2 PG in the nation, #10 overall (rated at 96 on ESPN)
Virginia Johnson, Iowa City (City): #11 SF, #62 overal (rated at 93)
Bethany Doolittle, Oakdale (MN): #40 PF (rated at 90)

Bluder seems to have figured out what works and what doesn't in the Big 10, and is now stepping up her game on the recruiting trail. I really couldn't care less if she doesn't go out East. The team we have is pretty damn good.

Counting this year as the Hawks should make the NCAA tournament, she is in her 11th year and has taken the Hawks to 8 NCAA tournaments in 11 years and 2 NIT's so that is post season play in 10 of the 11 years, a winning record in 10 of those 11 years, and 20 win seasons (the Hawks should get 20 this year as well) in 6 of those 11 years, and they will finish in the top 5 of the Big Ten for the 8th time in 11 years as well. If this is average, then I'm fine with an average program.

And as mentioned by someone else, they will be loaded next year with midwest kids again.

Sometimes girls want to stay closer to home. Kelsey Bone who was the Gatorade National Player of the year 2 years ago at Sugarland Dulles in Houston signed with South Carolina. She was a top scorer for them. What I heard locally is she wanted to get away from her mother. But she transferred back to Texas A+M this year and is sitting out this year. Just got homesick. But I am sure Gary Blair is glad to get here. Her game against Brittany Griner in the regional semi two years ago drew 7000 in Houston. Largest crowd ever for a regular season girls hs game in Houston. Both Griners and Bone's hs coaches were at a funeral I was at last summer. Probably why Bluder gets mostly MW players.

I'm a lot more worried about a major college WBB program with only one post, than where they're from. OSU's ability to bring in a 2nd post really affected the game tonight.

University's handling of C. Vivian Stringer's family issues.......p*ss poor. Not every coach is Stringer. Bluder's done a solid job, and it looks to be getting better.

what specifically did the University handle poorly regarding her family issues?

No Sheit!! So lay off, DesMoinesHawk. What more do you want?

Her husband died while at UI Hospital. I never knew the details, and I forgot most of what I did know, but Stringer was extremely upset about the situation.

Her husband died, and he was very close with their daughter. She is/was a very special needs child, and not having her husband there made things VERY difficult for her. It was bad enough just having to take time away from her family for basic coaching duties. She didn't mind that. But the university kept pressuring her into making all the I-Club trips and such. She was pretty miffed with that, because she wasn't really given a lot of time to adjust.

Ok. I didn't know there was friction with family issues and the University.

I'm a little familiar with their daughter - my wife worked with her in a social-work setting when we both were going to school @ Iowa.

I wouldn't necessarily call it friction. She just didn't feel like the university was particularly understanding of the stress Bill's death put on the family, and that's what prompted her to leave. I didn't learn about that until I read her book for a class this past fall. It's a great read, pretty inspiring stuff.
