PHOENIX — Iowa cornerback Shaun Prater referred all NFL questions to coach Kirk Ferentz.

Monday, Ferentz said the junior from Omaha has submitted his name to the NFL’s draft advisory committee for a gauge of where he would be selected in the 2011 draft if he opts to make himself eligible. Prater joins junior safety Tyler Sash and junior wide receiver Marvin McNutt in checking his NFL option.

I don't have a problem with these guys filing for the draft. It is best for them to find out where they stand in the draft to make the best decision for their future.

not sure what all comes back with these reports, if there's just a blanket statement of round expected, or if it carries some info with it. no harm done in filing as he might get an idea of what he can work on for the next year. i see him as the least likely in going early of the three.

I would say out of the 3 that Sash would benefit the most from leaving early. The others aren't as experienced and I feel they have a lot more room to improve.

Sash is NFL read, McNutt would be fine if he left but Prater would be a project. If anyone learned anything from Detroit drafting Spivey (SP) it should have been the rest of the NFL. Iowa CB are system guys, they are not lock down man on man guys like the NFL wants. Spivey was switched to safety because of this and it turned out well because he is a good tackler. Prater isn't ready.

I wish him luck. Covering B10 WRs is very difficult for him. Not sure what he is expecting to hear from the NFL outside of the fact that he isn't qualified to play there.

None are ready for the NFL. All need to work to improve on their speed. Sash and Prater are still too slow on their breaks to the ball. In the NFL, they expect you to contest passes, not just tackle the guy after he catches it. McNutt doesn't have the speed and needs more strength to be a solid possession receiver in the NFL. All should return if they want to have true NFL careers.

I believe he was but these are the same guys that voted Bulaga as OL of the Year in the B10 last year.

I'm not a scout. I just have to go off of what I see.

If there are NFL teams that run defensives that require CBs to play 10 yards off the ball let the WR catch the ball and then tackle the guy, then sure, Prater is ready to go. Outside of that, I haven't seen him do much.

None of these guys are actually going to the draft just want to get idea of where they would if they wanted to. I think any 20 year old would be interested to find out where they stand.. That way when you come back for your final year, you will know how much you need to improve to improve your draft stock.. Put me down. None of these 3 will actually leave early...

McNutt and Sash are both ready...the question is if it is worth it financially for them to go out. I would see Sash as a 3rd rounder and McNutt as a 4th. IMO, by staying they could improve to 2nd rounders in the 2012 Draft. So is the xtra cash worth the extra year of work they put in at the U of I?

Prater is not ready...6th maybe 7th rounder at best.

you mean the same Bulaga who was drafted in the first round, and is starting for a playoff team?

Have you seen Bulaga play for GB this year? It looks an awful lot like his games against Indiana & Michigan in 2009. Not pretty. Bascially, the quickest ways to the QB is over or around him.

Also, he wouldn't even be playing if not for GB's starting RT getting hurt.

Maybe all 3 will file papers with Hawkeyenation.com after the bowl games since there is a lot more expert advice here than they could ever think of getting back from the NFL!

Bulaga was seeing time at RG before starting at RT. He looks like a typical rookie if you ask me, at times he looks good to great but other times he gets beat bad but he is on a good team and that makes a heck of a difference.

There aren't too many shutdown corners in the NFL, either. That term gets thrown around pretty loosely (it was attributed to Antonio Cromartie not too long ago, for God's sake). Derrell Revis, Nnamdi Asomugha, and Charles Woodson are the only three that immediately spring to my mind that actually deserve that title.

It's true that most of our best corners haven't panned out at that position in the NFL. Fletcher is doing quite well at corner, though he'd probably be a better safety, and will likely get moved there if the Rams can ever get better personel at corner. But if NFL teams have learned anything, it's that they can find very good safeties if they take Iowa corners.

Our guys could stick at corner in the NFL if they were asked to mostly play zone. There aren't a lot of teams that do that anymore, but Tampa made a very nice run by asking Ronde Barber to play zone almost exclusively. Our guys would do fine in that kind of system.
