Iowa-ISU Grades

Let's see what everyone thought about last night's meet...

125- B+ McD dominated but had difficult turning his guy for back points. I realize his opponent's only objective in the match is not to give up the TF, but I'm greedy.

133 A- Ramos is going to be fun to watch in years to come. He's like a younger Brands out there. Aggressive, runs back to the center, pulling guys in from the edge. I thought it was the right move to put him in over Moore, just because he seems to use his offense more. I think Moore gets the nod tonight against MSU and will have to keep pace. I think this gets decided at Midlands.

141 A Talk about exciting! I admit I was way off on this prediction and am glad I was. No "pooping pants" with this guy. He is mean, confident, and brings some nice funk. I think he suffers from the Ballweg family's inability to not let people get to his legs, but what his older brother lacked in confidence in his ability, Mark oozes. I think we can probably put all the Marion returning this year rumors away, because 141 is going to be just fine. Probably low AA, to just missing the cut.

149 D Nothing much was expected from me, but still disappointing. I thought this would be a problem after seeing the DIII guy get to his legs so easy before Chiri got the pin. Will probably be a long year at this weight.

157 B+ Took St John a while but he got rolling late in the third. The battle between two high level HS recruits went our way. The difference between the two was one can finish shots and the other can't. St John reminds me of a bigger McD. Tall, strong, not real fast but can pull guys in and finish the shot.

165 C- Kerr was his typical self. Let the guy get to his legs and try to out scramble. This time he lost. No idea if Janseen is in the mix here, so this is who we probably got at this weight.

174 B- This was never in doubt, you probably saw this year's NC champ at work last night. In the first period, I was thinking to myself, if the attitude didn't match the talent with our 174lber. He's confident and looks the part, but got dominated. I bumped his grade up because at the very end he took a shot with a few seconds left. That tells me he never quits. Chalk this up to being young and going against a stud.

184 N/A Since it was the last match of the night, and I had a cranky kid, I had to leave during this match. He won by major, so that's nice.

197 D+ I'm not a coach, so I have no idea why this guy can't score. He's got a first class single leg, and a third class finish. He looks the size and has the right attitude and the technique looks text-book up until he gets the guy's leg off the ground. He wins the easy ones, and will probably lose against above average wrestlers.

HWT C- He won but gets the lower grade for stalling out at the end. We can't cry about the ISU and then not call our own out. He is just way too big and will probably have typical matches like last night throughout the year.

Overall, very impressed with our young ones. I'm guessing we a probably a top 5 team right now and can probably improve to a top 3 team by year end. See you all tonight for MSU.

I was pleased with the overall effort and results last night. It's frustrating reading all the negative comments (not referring to this thread) when this was our first test of the season. Everyone knows that 149 is a shallow weight for the Hawks with a backup in the starting line up, but hopefully a more solid wrestler cutting down by Midlands. I realize our expectations are high, and they should be, but we wrestled a good team last night and came out with the W despite losing 2 weights we should have won (197 and 165). Many are complaining that Ballweg wasn't offensive enough instead of relishing the fact that he beat a 5th year senior and former AA. There's lots to critique and they haven't peaked yet...but this is Iowa wrestling and Brands will ensure the Hawks are ready. And most importantly, just be glad you're not Cyclone fans :)

Well, I'm one of those guys who isn't satisfied. We can agree on two things: there's lots to like, and there's lots to to critique. The IOWA STYLE means attack and dominate. Waiting and cutting the corners is not our style. Ballweg got lucky.
Overall, someone named either Lofthouse, Ballweg, or Moore needs to rise to the challenges this year. Hopefully, I'd like to see EVERYONE named Lofthouse, Ballweg, and Moore rise.

Hopefully we agree on 3 things...you left out the part about not being Cyclone fans:D

197: Either Ward has the most dominate collar tie in the world or LL needs to get alot better on his feet. The entire 3rd period was spent with Ward with inside position on a collar tie and Lofthouse needing a takedown to win.

Hvy: Raisings activity level rose a little, but still not a fun wrestler to watch.

125: As dominate as you can get w/out backpoints

133: Ramos pushes the action in every match. If Moore get's the nod eventually, fine. I hope it's Ramos. As grapplefan said, The IOWA STYLE means attack and dominate. That is Ramos.

141: He'll get more offensive, that was his first match against a returning AA. I was impressed. It wasn't lucky. Great hips, alot of funk, heart and balls! Won me over.

149: That's what we'll get this year I think.

157: The difference in which school you go to. Out of high school a dead heat, a year and a couple months in the Iowa room and the separation is evident. Penn State recruits need to take note.

165: Kerr looked like he didn't know this is a meet. Kind of looked like he was thinking, well what the heck I think I'll...

174: EL looked like he wasn't intimidated at all, fought the entire match, but was facing a better wrestler right now.

184: Tough to say how good his competition was but he was the aggressor and looked good. (I left half way through that one.)

I have to agree with most of what people have said about Ethan, but he looked lost out there. He didnt do bad, and yes he was wrestling a very good guy, but he just kind of looked like he didnt know what to do. Watching on tv they zoomed on his face a couple times and he was looking around like he needed answers.

AF, i'm sorry but what about 165 made you say "we should have won"? Because we've beat him in the past? Kerr looked lazy, indifferent and just terrible in that match. it looked like he didn't care and thought he could just scramble whenever he wanted to. I thought he was dominated.

Here are is my take for the hawks for the season as a whole. I watched everyone of their duals live outside of MSU, but just saw the results.
125-started a little slow, picking up lately, i think we all agree is a total stud and will be in the hunt for another title.
133- I think Moore is going to have a hell of a time ripping this spot away from Ramos. One of the guys who wrestled for Iowa last year told me that Brands would find a way to get Ramos in the lineup. Looks like he's right and we can now see why. He's an attacking machine.
141-Been the best surprise to me so far. has looked great. Didnt' have much of an offense against Druin but came out of some really really deep shots and showed great scrambling. Most impressive thing to me was at the end of that dual he looked gased but found a way to suck it up for a huge win. Balls, big balls.
149- I'm not going to pile on, Chiri is just outmaned at this level right now.
157- Young stud. I'm not sure he's ready to compete for a title this year, but he'll be close. Real smooth.
165- This is a week weight. i thought when Kerr won his wrestle off 6-2 he started to have some separation and being able to go up to 65 would really help him. I was wrong. He had to score in the last 10 seconds to be LeClere from Coe and then last night he looked like he didn't care. Not sure what's going on there.
174- I was super high on him and still think he'll be a stud down the road, but i thought he would have a little more for Reader than he did and then took another lose tonight. But i didn't see that one so i can't comment on it, but it seems to be a bit of a red flag, but he's young, he'll take some lumps but should be fine.
184- was worried about some of his inconsistent behavior in the past to start the year, but has looked good so far. Hope he can keep it up because we'll need Grant to wrestle well.
197- Love, love his heart and fight but lets face it, he's really limited athletically. For him to have Ward that gassed so fast last night but still not be able to get the job done proves to me that he is going to have to wrestle his *** off to make AA but i really hope he can.
Hwt- I don't know. With him it's always going to be 3-2 type matches so it's hard to ever get really excited.

Overall some great promise for a handful of young studs in the line up, but we look pretty limited at about 4 weights. Good thing is that i have 100% belief in the system our coaching staff preaches so i konw that they will get better and better and better as the year goes on.
I'm sure some of you might think i'm being hard on some of the guys, but i'm just calling it the way i see it.

CR - Yes, when I said we should have won 2 weights that was "on paper" based on past performance. We definitely didn't deserve to win those match ups based on effort and execution. I was actually surprised at ISU's effort as they wrestled much better than I expected. I was also very impressed with Reader (I never expected EL to have a fighting chance in this matchup, but he's still a freshman and will improve).
