Ferentz Tues Presser

Hawkeye Sports - University of Iowa Official Athletic Site

Interestingly enough, doesn't think the hit on Robinson was illegal. Only says "I've got an opinion on that" in reference to it being PI. Also completely dodged a questions about using Coker more in the 2nd and 3rd quarter.

He may or may not have an opinion about whether it was a cheap shot. My take away was that if he does, his better sense -- to say nothing of NCAA rules -- dictates that he not express it.

Also note that none of Iowa's pit bull sports scribes asked what his opinion was on pass interference.

COACH FERENTZ: Throw in there that our fourth quarter offense hasn't been good enough in those cases.

He finally said something about the offense. Now let's see if he does anything about it or if it's just lip service.

Kirk's thin skin wouldnt have fared well in the NFL.

Lots of softballs, for sure. Sounded pretty annoyed at the question regarding Robinson's fumbles.

I don't think Hines' hit was illegal. He hit A-rob with his shoulder. However, I think the NCAA should consider legislating that type of hit out of the game. Hines essentially launched himself towards the upper body of a defenseless receiver, albeit not with his head leading.

Q. Did you ever enjoy the Metrodome?
COACH FERENTZ: When we won I thought it was great. When we lost, I hated it. Like everything.

This is how Iowa fans are. Win and we love everything, lose and it's all crap. made me laugh

Why should it have been a media session with teeth?

Even had Iowa entered the game undefeated ... the margin of our loss still would have been pretty respectable considering how tOSU has owned us through the years. And, had we entered the game undefeated and lost by the margin that we had ... they probably wouldn't have "gone after him either."

I just don't get what some Hawk fans want here.

IMO Ferentz isn't going to change anything. No changes on offense or defense. This is a top 25 football program.

You seem happy with that Homer - a top 25 program.
Even though there has been much mistaken hoopla about our offense, our offense continues to be traditionally not high-powered.

Overall because of coaching schemes, we have a team with an average offense and an average defense.

We can chalk up an automatic loss against any power with a spread offense. We can chalk up an automatic struggle against any team with a spread offense. We can chalk up an automatic struggle against any team with a good passing attack.

Since our offense and defense are average, a good number of those close games will end up as loses.

I'm not advocating anyone gets fired. I'm advocating schemes on offense and defense are tweaked so Iowa has a chance of winning more ball games - tweak them in real time so we won't need to rehash the season with "coaching whatifs".

Again, you like Iowa's performance Homer? Well, I don't. Especially when I see how Iowa can get better(but may not get better).

Um Homer, because the press have to opportunities to ask the hard questions that the rest of us want answered. For instance, why line up under center when you have a back up center playing right guard who is so clearly overmatched? Or how about the last two weeks you have had players and coaches from your opponents calling your program out for being too stubborn to change things even when they are not working and you have lost four games now in the exact same manner, doing the same things. Doesn't that add some justification to their criticisms? Or how about certain coaches seem to have your number whether their teams are full of 4 and 5 star players or not. What factors do you think lead to you being consistently beat by these particular coaches?

What exactly would you like a coach to do about players not executing in the fourth. He can't play for them. Do you expect Iowa to go to the spread in the 4th to shake things up????

If you're referring to the 3rd down sack on the last drive, Heyward (I think it was him) came around Vandervelde and Reiff of the left side, not through Koeppel. However, I agree that he should have been in the shotgun on all of those snaps.

Iowa's defense is average? Oh no you didn't just say that. Let me fix that for you

Overall because of coaching schemes, we have a team with an average offense and a great defense.

That's the truth, year after year the defense is ranked among the best in the nation. Imagine how bad Iowa would be with our admitidly average offense and a REAL average to bad defense. We would be talking about 6-6 seasons again.

Why is the press afraid to ask questions? Or difficult questions towards KF? It's not like his staff is real open with practices, or interviews, etc before, during, or after the season????

So it's not like they'll get locked out of some in depth story. I think the one question we all would have liked to know is why was Coker kept out of the game until the 4th Q?

Umm CAARHawk, how 'bout the fact that Iowa's O is built off of balance and the need to sell the play-action pass. Very simple .... and as a result, Ferentz shouldn't have to rehash football 101-like material.

And as for players and/or coaches remarking about Iowa's "stubbornness" ... on D I don't suppose that you realize that we're a little hamstrung with regard to what we can do due to our LB personnel. If you don't recall, back when Bob was an underclassman, we only played one D because that's all that he knew ... and it's not like Iowa's D was bad back then ... nor is bad right now.

Again ... that's football 101 stuff. Why should Ferentz suffer just because some fans are ignorant?

Of course, some might ask why the coaches didn't give Coker more reps ... especially when he was having so much success running the ball.

Of course, again there ... if Iowa only had the intention of running the ball ... the fans might actually have a point. However, basic football strategy also dictates that you typically DON'T want your personnel to tip your hand with regard to what you're going to do. Thus, having ARob on O simply gave the Iowa O more options ... and he's also a guy who has earned A LOT of trust on the team. There's a reason why many on the team had been referring to ARob as a team MVP on O.

I'm perplexed that it's hard for fans to understand ... however, I'm also perplexed why so many Americans seem to think that math or physics is "hard" too.

The biggest thing I got out of the day was that i wouldn't expect BW to come back at all and KF could care less.
