Helen Keller was right. "Conservative" play-calling becomes extremely high-risk when the opposition knows what you're going to do. It's not too tough to understand that. Woody Hayes hated Iowa under Forest Evashevski because, Woody said, he never knew what damn thing Evy would throw at the Buckeyes. Woody was sweating out every Iowa week because he didn't know how to get his team prepared.
One time Evy ran huge splits in the offensive line, almost sideline to sideline, against Ohio State, a look Iowa had never shown before. Woody went nuts and an out-manned Iowa team won. And this was in single-platoon days. There's no good reason for Iowa to continue to be ultra-conservative on offense. The Hawkeyes have an intelligent, experienced QB and experienced receivers. It's definitely time to get aggressive. Kirk would do well to study Evy and to recall some of the exotics from his days with Hayden Fry.
