Iowa Wrestlers to Washington DC--Montell Marion there

I heard on the radoi and saw on Hawkeyesport.com that the Iowa wrestling team traveled to Washington DC to particpate in the President's tribute to NCAA National Champions.

I found it interesting in the picture that Montell Marion was along for the trip. What is his story? Is he still taking classes at Iowa?

MM should be back this year if he continues with his "change in life". So far he is doing well. He is enrolled at Iowa, he is working out, and so far he has had no more troubles. If he continues with that trend, he will be back this year(most likely).

While I am definitely not as confident as Thom67 about Montell's return this year he is right that he is still around and trying to get back. He is working hard and trying to keep his nose clean. The problem is that this decision isn't up to the coaches, Montell, or really even the athletic department at this point. Those not directly involved in the sport are less likely to go easy on Montell and let him compete this year.

To answer the original question though, Pin2win is right. This has to do with last years team which Montell was a part of. You will notice that other guys who have graduated and no longer a part of the team were there as well.

he is talking about going to washington dc not being part of this years team

I understand what you are saying. My point is there is a huge difference between graduating and getting kicked off the team. By all means a graduating senior should get to go on this trip. If you are truly kicked off the team for disciplinary purposes, I think you have given up any rights you have to go.

This makes me wonder how much he is really "off the team"

he pratices with them all the time and he isn't kicked off the team as far as the coaches and wrestlers are concerned.

kicked off the team or not he deserves to go to the white house

I noticed that the seniors from last year's team were in the picture. Yes, this was a tribute to last year's team. Those seniors graduated from the program in good standing and was not surprised to see them with the group. From what I understood, Montell did not leave the program in good standing and was a little surprised to see him on the trip.

I do hope that you all are correct is saying that Montell has been working to change his life around. Forget about wrestling, I would like to see this young man turns things around and go down a better path.

It sounds like he will have to answer to a higher power (other than Brands and Barta) to get himself back on to the mat. For him to change their minds, he will certainly have to continue to go down the road of keeping himself out of trouble.

Some on here is making it sound like the dude killed or raped someone. Turn his life around? All he did was act like an idiot and get drunk and broke some windows. He's not necessary a bad guy, just someone who had an opportunity and ruined it; happens all the time. Had to laugh at your "go down the road of keeping himself out of trouble." Do you mean not go down the wrong way in a bus lane? I'm joking of course, but in my opinion I'm sure he'll end up just fine whether he wrestles again or not.

Unfortunately for Montell, this was not his first run in with the law. He had a couple of issues prior to coming to Iowa. When I said to turn his life around, I meant that he had a history of getting himself into trouble. By making some changes, I am hopefully that he can get his education and do something good with his life.

For Montell to get back on the mat in an Iowa singlet, he will need to keep his nose clean. It sounds like the decision to allow him back on the mat will NOT be in the hands of the wrestling coaches or Gary Barta. Much like the Joey Slaton issue last year, the decision to allow Montell to keep again will be made by the "upper management" at Iowa. If the Slaton story is any indication, Montell may have a tough time getting back on the mat.

You're right, he didn't kill anyone, but what he has shown is a pattern of questionable choices. if it was just one mistake, he wouldn't be in the situation he's in. And that is when he's had a 100 good reasons to keep his behavior in line and he still couldn't. The structure of Iowa wrestling and Tom Brands and his coaching staff couldn't keep him in line so I would say he does have several steps to take to mature enough to get his life in order because if he's messing up under these circumstances what is going to happen after he's done with school? Now 99% of guys on here including my self did stupid stuff at Montell's age as well, but to shrug it off as a 'kids will be kids' type thing, in my opinion is keeping your head in the sand a little.
