Dakin Gone

I don't understand why there is a belief that Iowa won't make a good hire to replace Woods. With one glaring exception, KF is generally pretty thoughtful and spot on in his hiring.

That said, this business is about relationships and I assume he is following Woods. It is what it is. Go back to Melbourne and get a new one.

I hope so. Special teams were pretty bad in the few years before Kirk gave Woods the job. I think Woods did an uncommonly good job...almost everything he touched turned to gold in special teams, from kickers to punters to returners. We started to take it for granted. And if it was as easy as just grabbing another punter from Australia, then every college team would have a good punter from Australia.

I'm worried that Kirk will try to replicate what he did with Woods, thinking he can take any good coach without ST coaching experience and they will be able to figure it out. Maybe they do, maybe they don't.

My hope is that Woods has elevated special teams enough at Iowa that it is a highly sought position. I don't know what the market is for ST coordinator, but I'd think it'd be a worthy use of funds to pay top 10 in the country for the position. If Iowa wants to win in the margins, then devote an appropriate piece of the pie to special teams. That'd be my preference - find a candidate with an impressive background in special teams already.

I don't blame Dakins for going. He had a good but not great year, IMO. I don't see him in the NFL unless he improves greatly and I don't know that I see that.

In this day and age, a college player can make a lot of money via NIL, a lot more than not making the NFL.

I would be happy to see Desmond King get ST..........

when has kirk ever hired a guy without experience as a full time coaching assistant, much less as a coordinator?

The one glaring exception is huge. You might also get push back from some for the Tim Polasek and Greg Davis hires, but your overall point is spot on.

Kick the tires on Drew Miller, and see if he wants to come on home.

The way it sounded on the Locked On podcast they thought the hire was going to be a promotion from within. They also believe the kicker from one of the Dakota Schools is already a done deal. Miller came up but I know in another forum his dad used to post and stated his main reason to go to Georgia was academics. Can’t remember the field but it was something Iowa either didn’t offer or was not as good

I didn’t know that. So, I can assume Miller is off the board then?

Don’t think he is off the board as things always can change but the way it sounded a few years ago Academics are a big priority so kudos to that. I don’t know anyone on a personal basis so can’t speculate on what anyone is thinking

Dakin cannot earn anything from NIL. So his best shot at a payday is to work hard for four years and, hopefully, get drafted into the NFL.

That may not be quite accurate. There was some discussion on that today because I believe his mom is a US citizen and unsure on her residence status but he may be able to earn something. I don’t think it matters in this case anyway. There are lots of punters that would love the opportunity to kick at Iowa and in Kinnick. I would be more concerned if it was an injury in September and we had nobody. It is early for growth

Did not know that, thanks for the info.

And you're correct, much better to have to deal with this now than mid season.

I could see Jason Manson possibly getting a shot at the special teams gig. Then maybe a guy like Desmond King getting a GA analyst sorta gig to get foot in the door. I could also see KF going totally outside the program for it too. That's what he's been doing with the last couple hires so who knows.

Can't remember what podcast I was listening to but they believed that the hire is an internal candidate and they think it is a done deal. My guess based on this is Budmyer will get the coordinator spot and Manson may move to WR coach. We will see how it plays out

Yeah that'd be interesting... I'm still not sold on Budmyer as a coach yet.. How he got the WR gig is still head scratching to me. Our WR room hasn't exactly improved leaps and bounds under him. Who knows that sorta shuffling is on the table too.

I am less of a Woods worshipper on here than most, but I recognize he is a good recruiter and a good coach. He has brought in and coached up some incredibly good players the last few years. But, the STs failed us several times this year, costing us at least the Iowa State game. USC maybe. I also thought the punter and the kicker regressed a bit this season. Not much, but some.

Is Woods a loss? Very much so. Can he be replaced and keep the STs mojo going? Absolutely. STs is about personality more than most coaching spots. We need somebody, young, energetic, and ready to make a name for himself as a coach.

The other thing about losing Woods that is such a loss is local recruiting overall. He had a big hand in landing kids like RVZ and Hayden Large. I think he the DeJeans too. Woods had a hand in those NW Iowa boys I believe. I think he kinda took the torch from Reese Morgan when he retired to kinda be the instate Iowa guy. That's the part that won't be so easy to replace right away

Yes, Woods from an X's and O's standpoint can be replaced but he had a very good reputation and built a lot of relationships within the state and Eastern Nebraska. Not saying it can't be replaced or maybe moved to a different zone depending on who they bring in but the recruiting is a bigger question right now in my opinion.

The name that has been brought up on some other topics is Desmond King. I am intrigued by how he could help bring in some kids from Michigan which has a ton of talent that I wish we could tap into further if he was brought on line. You have a young guy from a tougher upbringing that was under recruited and made a nice living in the NFL.

I like the symmetry. Michigan State gains a guy who can recruit Iowa and Nebraska, Iowa replaces him with a guy with ties to Michigan.

Iowa generally does pretty well with the local kids. Losing Woods as a recruiter and program ambassador certainly hurts, but if you are an Iowa kid, you either want to play for a living legend or not. KF remains the biggest recruiting draw for instate kids.

It depends we gotta remember Woods has been developing these relationships with the HS coaches all over the state for years and years. I'm not so sure how hands on KF is with that part of it. I'm not sure if they still have that HS coaches clinic thing. That was pretty genius of a thing to do I thought. I totally get what you're saying with the end of the day kinda is what it is. I'm more talking about how the beginnings of those relationships get started. I'm wondering who the new instate voice is going to be. Thankfully ISU is going through their enema and won't have any entrenched relationships either with local HS coaches. That'll make it easier for our transition some.

I would bet the Nebraskas MN Wisconsins IL would all be trying to dip their toes in on Iowa recruits now (first off who woulda thunk Iowa had enough kids to fight over? I think Iowa had 13 kids this last class sign with D1 schools)
