Oregon 6.5 point favorite

Rhule would not be an upgrade over Ferentz. That's the bar I'm using since @BigD wants him shit canned.
It seemed that the point you were making is that some of our rival schools have had very solid programs and then they decided to fire successful, stable coaches to try and "get to the next level" and in doing so they flushed their programs into the shitter. To that point, Fickle is the poster child. Frost really isn't because Nebbie was already shitty when he was hired. The better examples would be firing Solich for Callahan or firing Pelini for Mike Riley. Both times Nebbie fired proven winners to try and hire someone who could win conference and national titles, and both times they set the program back a decade.

If KF retired, I would be fine hiring a proven winner and culture builder like Rhule. He has turned around three college programs now that were shit when he got there and good to great when he left. Rhule doesn't belong in the point you are making.

If he takes them to 6-6 this year and ends up with 6-7 wins next year they'll dump him anyway.
Maybe. That shithole in Lincoln is cursed. They sold their souls to the Devil in the late 90s and now they are paying the price.

They could lose out this year and their schedule is unbelievable next year. He may indeed not make it past next year, but hey, at least they doubled his buyout last week!! :)

I watched most of the Nebbie/USC game and came away unimpressed with either run defense. I think Iowa can put up 225 in rushing on both teams. USC's offense looked pretty ordinary against a largely ordinary Nebbie D. Now, will that be the case in their home time zone? I seemed to recall we severely underperformed last year when we visited the Rose Bowl.
I didn't get to see much of it but I like the sounds of your assessment.

Those two things go hand in hand with he fanbase/admin approach though. Once you start firing good coaches, you evolve to the point where you have to hire guys Like Frost/Riley/et al and you stumble on a Rhule by dumb luck. But 7-5 will never be good enough with a guy like Rhule and I think that's their ceiling on average. It's more a matter of recruiting than coaching IMO.

Put Matt Rhule at OSU or PSU and he's going to win a ton of games. He'll never get the horses at a nebraska and their fans can't seem to understand that it doesn't really matter if they have a Frost or a Rhule. They are what they are until they get lucky with a recruiting class somehow, and they'd be better off to keep a guy like Rhule for a decade but they won't.

No guts no glory has always been my motto, not only for my favorite and lifetime sports teams, but also the way I have always lived my life. That's why I got promoted over thousands in my profession. Was it nerve racking? YEP. Was it risky? YEP. However I went for it and got promoted over thousands of other federal employee. So, I wasn't talking out of my ass.

Congrat's to the Indiana administration for bringing success to their team and to their fans. They could have just sit put out of fear. Their last coach was solid, but over time the powers that be over there just said it's time for a change and it has paid off big time.

It's time for Kirk to do or die against Oregon. I was talking to my youngest son about things. He said to me "Watch Iowa beat Oregon and then lose to some low life big ten program after that".

Yah. It's been awhile since Iowa was #1.
But it's only been 4 years since they were #2. Yeah. We know how that turned out.
We also know how the last time they were #1 turned out. They didn't wind up #1 then either. Still a special season. Under Ferentz, they've finished the season ranked higher than they finished in 1985 a total of 5 times. I mean, Ferentz teams finish inside the top 10.....20% of the time.

This isn't me saying "l'l old Iowa, who's OK with averageness". That's me saying, if you go to school there for 4 years, you've got a really great chance of going to some great football games and having a really fun season.

And Indiana *could* wind up #1 in some of the polls this week or next.
I think if you're a no guts, no glory Indiana fan this is great. It could work out. They could win the whole thing, and it would be glorious, for sure. But, let's see how it plays out.
I also have a really really really tough time they're going to sustain like OSU/Alabama and have a streak of 21 out of 25 years finishing inside the top 10. Or even a streak like PSU that is a bridesmaid on the outside looking in. Or even like Iowa where they finish inside the top 10....20% of the time.

To 10 finishes over the last 25 years:
10+ OSU, Alabama, Oklahoma, Georgia, LSU, Oregon
9-10 USC, Clemson, Florida, Michigan
Four of those teams are currently not even in the AP top 25.
There are three teams who have won the title who are not on this list:
Texas, FSU, Clemson
Football is a hard, hard sport to win.

I have a tough time putting Indiana anywhere close to any of those programs.

Now, granted, it's been awhile for Ferentz for a top 10 finish. It's been 10 years since 2015. And they did lose their way for literally the last 6...and that's absolutely on him. But, at the moment, it looks like that corner is turned back towards 'normal'.....which should include a top 10 finish soon. Not that I'm expecting a top ten finish this year. I suppose it's possible. But it wouldn't surprise me if we saw another top ten (or better) in his last few years.....assuming he stays.

The currently rotting in hell ghost of Larry Phillips will haunt them till the end of time and I'm here for it.

Remember the preacher from poltergeist? It's no coincidence that he looks like Tom Osborne's twin brother. That dude sold his soul to the devil long before he ever won a national championship. Hid guns for players in his office. Scott Frost hid in the closet while Phillips beat up his girlfriend. That program and fanbase is a rotten cesspool of filth. It's finally gotten what it's deserved all this time. And I hope Osborne dies watching his huskers getting beat by Purdue to go winless in the B1G someday.

Coach Cig is a once in a generation hire. Any school that is trying to replicate that hire is chasing unicorns and fairies through the meadows of Oz.

As Fry is famous for saying, every new hire is a crapshoot. Anyone who says they know a coach will succeed at a new gig is full of shit. They may or they may not. The odds of Iowa hiring a coach that is better than KF is like 10%. The odds of hiring someone about the same is like 15%. You can do the math on what remains.

What's wild is there's probably a lot of ADs with the goal of doing exactly that. PSU, Florida, Auburn, LSU among however many more come open I'm sure have those same unrealistic expectations of grandeur. 'If Indiana can we should too' isn't how it works.

We all probably won't live long enough to see what Cig has done at a school like Indiana ever happen again. Let alone have multiple schools magically do it this next coaching cycle.

That deserves a Holy Shit!

Damn. Brutal. Gangster. Love it.
And you know what? To this day, after almost 30 goddamn years, every back and forth with a husker fan ends with, "Oh I'm sorry, how many trophies does Iowa have in the case?"

Minnesota has 7 recognized-by-everyone national championships in football.

I'm not a big Gopher fan, but do you think a single soul in that state uses, "How many trophies does your team have" as a comeback? Nope.

My reply to those husker fans is always: "Your team has 2 fewer trophies than Minnesota, and the Black Friday stepchild trophy has seen a whole lot more Iowa than nebraska air. But we're just Iowa so I'll stay out of it."

At the risk of jinxing things and switching sports, Ben McCollum sure shares a lot of characteristics with Coach Cig. Just sayin'......

:)
But...he didn't yell, "ISU SUCKS!!! SO DOES nEBRASKA AND WISCONSIN!!!" at a pep rally...

Osborne's gonna be sitting right next to Larry Phillips when he finally buys the farm. I don't feel bad for that sad old sack of shit of a man. Lots of crimes happened that wouldn't probably have if he'd done the right thing early on. Put that whole program in a gunny sack and throw it in the river.

And thankfully Iowa hoops hasn't been as down as Indiana football had been. Albeit we had a hell of a low stretch under Lick in modern times. But hell that's been long enough ago now I shouldn't even consider that modern times. College hoops isn't the same as then anymore not by a long shot.

Indiana football was a complete afterthought forever to the point they were below NW and probably shouldn't have even been in the BIG. If not for Bobby Knight and their hoops program who knows they probably wouldn't have. To turn around Indiana at all let alone at the snap of his fingers overnight is mind boggling. Especially to this extent. They might just win the whole Fn thing

I feel the same way. I personally knew the woman Phillips beat up and drug down the stairs by her hair. (while Frost hid in the closet). That is not the only situation old saint Tom turned a blind eye to. He claimed to be there for the kids, but just the ones who helped him win. If he had a pedo OC I am sure he would have turned a blind eye too just to keep the Orange Bowl train a running. Asshole.

He twisted not wanting to lose his prized horses into wanting to help them on his own which anyone with a tenth of a brain can see right through. Scumbag.

There was a poster back in the say by the name of @74Hunter who came on here multiple times defending Osborne and Phillips and it resulted in the best thread to ever grace this board --->

https://forum.hawkeyenation.com/threads/schwartzs-article.83173/

And there's also this one that shows how morally bankrupt almost every husker fan I've come across is --->

https://forum.hawkeyenation.com/threads/lawrence-phillips-found-dead-in-prison-cell.73798/

Highly recommend these threads. 3 pages each is all...
