Jeff Horner to BVU

Jeff Horner has been hired as the new head coach of Buena Vista University.

One can't ignore that BV is located in Storm Lake, hometown of new HC Ben McCollum.

Need some time to ponder this one............
There is a hospital in Storm Lake with the same name as the college. While I lived there I never really heard much about them having much going on in Sports.

One memory I shall never forget was the sound of the flight for life lifting off from the hospital's helicopter pad to fly my newborn son (literally one hour after birth) to the Netal Natal Unit in Omaha, Nebraska. Also the serious look on the doctor's face when he came into the room my wife and I were assigned. My wife had just had a C-section, and the doctors told her she should stay AT LEAST three days before leaving to go to Omaha.

"NOT!!!!!!!!!" Was my wife's reply to that doctor. We are leaving for Omaha as soon as we awoke the next morning. My wife wanted to go as soon as the helicopter left the groiund. She tried to convince the hospital to let her fly in the helicopter with our son. When we got the $5000 bill just for the flight for life transport to Omaha, I wanted to know where my helicopter was parked.

We enjoyed Storm Lake as the people seemed really nice for the two years that we lived there. Small community, peaceful rural like setting. However very cold with the constant windchill factors during the winter.

I get pissy when people mix up Storm Lake with Spirit Lake. Biiiiiiig Difference.

I suspect this will be a short stint for Jeff. Build it up, create a winner, move to a real college town. Congrats.

I was born at that hospital.. Grew up 30 mins west of there. It was probably half the size it is now as they've done a lot of adding to it over the years. The school is just to the south and east right on the lake. My friends and I went to those summer basketball camps they had with Iowas coaches and some players. I bet I was at same ones with Ben as I'm 2 yrs older then him. That's the gym we were in at BV for all those. Pretty wild how Horner is going to be coaching there now.

What is BV, DIII or NAIA?

Jeff will certainly give the program some name recognition. Maybe they are wanting to upgrade?

I've never been to Storm Lake. A month or so ago the City of Storm Lake posted an article on facebook about hometown boy Ben MCcollum getting hired as the hawk coach. I clicked on it and read the article Now with all this AI stuff, I'm guessing that's what it is, I'm getting all these Storm Lake feeds about everything Storm Lake. I'm going to visit Iowa in August and my wife and i just might drive up there and check it out.

I haven’t been through there in over 25 years so my memory may be faulty but as I recall it’s just another town dominated by a meatpacking plant. The other thing I remember about it is I had a pair of Teva’s stolen off the back of my motorcycle while I was inside a convenience store. Okoboji would be a more interesting lake to visit.

The Boji/IGL area is fun, but it definitely has it's downfalls. If you're rich it's a fun playground, if you're not it's just a Temu version of the Ozarks. In 44 years I've spent a HELL of a lot of time there.

We're thinking of visiting Spirit Lake as well.

I will give Storm Lake some props. They invested in a lakeside water park, both indoor and outdoor, and a hotel and convention center. Its called Kings Pointe. We have done a couple family weekends there. Its a poor man's version of Great Wolf Lodge. Beyond that, Storm Lake doesn't have much going for it.

Spirit Lake/Okoboji is a great Summer destination and Winter Games is epic fun.

My aunt on my dad's side lived in SL. We visited often. (I was from Hampton). Nice place

Yeah I did a lot of running around SL as a kid growing up. Back before that water park was there it was just a regular public swimming pool. It was pretty large and popular where my bro and extended family all took swimming lessons at. My aunt used to teach lessons both there and at the colleges indoor pool which was in the same building the basketball arena is in. It was called Siebens Fieldhouse with the pool being called Finkbine way back then I'd imagine it's still that or maybe they've since changed it I have no idea.

As kids we were able to sneak in there with our balls and play on the court. Security was extremely lax to say the least back in the 90s.. No locked doors just turn the lights on. Nobody ever called us out for it either. I bet my cousins, brother and I played in there 50 times over 4 or 5 summers who knows. Great memories it was fun

Somewhat similar experience growing up. My friends and I were always sneaking into the Diagonal gym on weekends to shoot hoops. We would do things like leave a window open just a little bit so we could open it and get in.

The school never allowed it offic ially, though. Sometimes a teacher would come and just sit in the gym, after we were already there, allowing us to continue to play ball. Sometimes they would shoo us out.

Also fun memories.

I'm curious what BVU is doing hiring Jeff Horner? I keep thinking somebody from the Des Moines Register will sniff it out and write a story but not so far. Are they planning on upgrading their athletic programs? That would make sense. It has been proven that having good athletic programs helps enrollment

I looked up the BVU athletic director, Amy Meier. Quite the hsitory. She started out as an administrative assistant in BV athletics and worked her way up the ladder to AD. Her motto is to always be the best you can be and do the best for your current job. Hiring Jeff Horner ought to fit into that motto.

Looking back it was so great in that we did all that with zero bad intentions. We had a crew of 5-10 of us sometimes and we weren't gonna vandalize or steal anything. We just wanted to play some ball on a nice gym floor without the wind from what it was always blowing outside. Nowadays I'm sure there's zero chance kids could get away with doing that.

Well being the private D3 school they are I'm not so sure how into all that they might be. I can't imagine sports generates any revenue there per say. They do have a football program too and I can't remember them ever drawing a crowd much larger then parents and families of players ever going. They charge so much for enrollment it's wild. I bet they are top 5 in that in the state for that.

I bet Horner going there was more of a him taking an open opportunity that was available somewhat in his neck of the woods more then it was BVU trying to make any kind of splash.
