UNC suspensions

He considered forfeiting three non conference games. BTW, his book "Don't Flinch", the source of these posts, is possibly the best sports autobiography in my collection. His in depth discussion on the transition to Bret Biliema, and the multiple controversies it caused, is worth the price of the book itself.
Thanks for the tip. I'll read it.

It's certainly not the trite "Here is Your Life" sports autobiography. He goes on to detail about how Bob Devaney influenced him, how his wife had a huge say in some decisions and non decisions, how things weren't always rosy between him and Hayden, the early Madison years when the best known athlete on campus was a female distance runner and the entire athletic department was on life support, how he butted heads with people who ran Rose Bowl functions, etc. One of my favorites.

I know some people that used to coach with him. Some great stories.

My Currier Hall neighbor was a student manager for the football team and worked with Barry's linebackers.

His (Barry's) Mason City high school team beat Dubuque Hempstead for the state championship the same week a popular sophomore lost her battle to cancer. Her eighth grade brother was my age and is a lifelong friend. Those Hempstead kids played their guts out that night in her memory but a potential game tying two point conversion came up short. Our head coach was a close friend of George Chryst, father of the current Badger coach. They both ran the wing-T offense and helped out in each other's summer camps.

That's hardly "the worst" thing that could be thought about Steve. There are boosters/locals that help out athletes in every P5 college town. Why is it a stretch to think he leveraged his relationships for memoribilia, seeing how much of a Badger fan he is? All you need now, Pollyanna, are your crutches.
And perhaps you should first know something, anything, about the affair before you make accusations.

SMU had guys just show up at a recruit's house with a new car and suitcase full of large bills. They didn't even seem to care if they got caught it was that bad.
One of those recruits was Brian Bosworth. And that's basically how they approached him. Only it was a limo with a hooker inside. Boz famously replied "I didn't need their help to get laid-I could do that on my own-but the way they recruited me was basically the same way they got busted."

Update on Shoe Box news. Thosands of shoes damaged from August 20th flooding. Water was waist high in Schmitt's Bargain Box store in Black Earth, across the street from the main store. No word on how many of the collectables may have been damaged.

Black Earth, Mazomanie, and Cross Plains, about 20-25 miles west of Madison, were at the epicenter of the worst flooding with up to fifteen inches of rain.

Yup, but the isthmus is getting it now. The Tenny Park dam is only thing keeping much of East Madison from flooding. And there's concerns that it couldn't handle another hard rain.

Western Dane County certainly got hit hard. Biggest issue is the lack of a LOCAL security blanket in those areas. Efforts of help are coming from the city which has also been affected by the flooding. Estimated cost to date: 108 mill. Madison's certainly having its disaster but I'm not sure its coming close to what IC had a few years ago.

Wisconsin Heights High School, a common rival of ours in volleyball and the alma mater of former Badger hoopster Mike Wilkinson, had to have been flooded. I know exactly where that is. And Schmitt's Rookies Sports Bar, any word on that?

Steering this thread back on course, I remember the Cedar and Iowa River flooding events of 2008 like they were yesterday. Horrible. Some buildings in Cedar Rapids still boarded up. Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City didn't reopen until recently. Old Five Seasons Center in Cedar Rapids couldn't hold concerts for years.
