Had an uncle that sailed to Cuba last summer, said it was an amazing experience and place to visit. Almost otherworldly - like going back in time to the 50s

AND.....they even had the same gum that he chews, back in the 50's......some things never change, eh?
The 1950's was when the Castro led regime overthrew Batista.

Some thought it would only be a temporary change.

Oops!

It didn't take long for Fidel to make very nice with Nikita Kruschev and put the world as close to the brink of nuclear war as it has ever been.

Kennedy was on the way to his top secret bunker, probably the basement of a head shop or gentlemen's club in Miami or someplace like that.

3rd World Countries are an eye opener for most Americans. I remember the first time I traveled to India and China ... the poverty, especially in the rural areas makes you appreciate everything we have here.

13 days of being on the brink. Good movie as well.

Yep. First time I visited a 3rd world country was Haiti. I was speechless for about the first hour. Port au Prince is like one large trash dump. Interesting feeling to realize you're being cased to be robbed by children as you're walking around a market. And as you said, the rural areas was poverty you'd have to see to believe.

Looking back, on occasion, to my journal from a trip to Madagascar, the entry for one town reads thusly: "These kids need a dentist, pronto!"

Basically, the kids, impoverished as expected, spent their days sucking/chewing on sugar cane. The. Whole. Day. I haven't seen teeth like that on three-pack-a-day smokers. Very sad, yet the kids were happy, active and fun as hell to interact with.
