McShay 2.0 mock draft

Has Daniels going 26 to the Falcons and JJ going 28 to the Steelers. Little earlier for Daniels than I expected, but a little later than I estimated for Jackson. Of course, with the combine coming up there could be some movements. And it’s still early and it’s a mock draft and ....

My guess is that he's expecting Daniels to play guard, since Atlanta has Alex Mack, who was 1st team All-Pro this year. No one would waste a 1st round pick on a backup center.

He could start immediately at center, whereas at guard he’d be a backup for a while. He’s also on the way small end for a guard being below 300 lbs. Only 2 of his 25 starts came at guard and his last 2 years he played only center. I think teams are drafting him with his smarts in mind and my personal guess is he’ll be taken 2nd round as a center.

Travis Frederick, the Pouncey brothers, and Nick Mangold were all taken first round and all are Pro Bowlers for what that’s worth.

I would think his value would be most at center. As you mentioned guards nowadays are 310 plus. He's always been listed shy of 300 at Iowa. If he springs up the draft board as the #1 center I could see him going late first round to a team needing one. I don't see 2 or 3 centers being taken in the first round and I think there's a guard from Notre Dame that's pretty highly thought of and I don't see 2 or 3 guards going in the first round either. I think it'll be a QB, DL, DB, heavy 1st round. I don't think I could tell you one offensive tackle on the board... Maybe that's just me being out of the loop or maybe it's a weaker Oline class.

I think the combine will clear up where Jackson goes. If he runs a 4.4 and looks good there's no way he drops past the top 10 or so. There will be no less then 2 or maybe 3 corners taken in the top 15 picks or so. He'll be one of them just a matter of he's the 1st 2nd or 3rd off the board.

Agree, though I'm not sure he ends up top 10. That might be a reach.

It's amazing how GMs can get caught up in tiny details of the combine. For CBs and WRs running a 4.51 can drop you quite a ways compared to, say, 4.48, even though the difference is only three one-hundreths of a second. It's all about perception.

Yeah part of that depends on the run on QBs. There's like 4 or 5 of them that you could put in a blender and just pick them out in any order. What teams are favoring which ones will be a secret right up till draft time. There'll be a lot of misdirection on who's interested in who I'm sure leading up to it but we'll see. But back to DBs and Jackson I could see the 49ers taking him at 9 or 10 depending on where they pick pretty easily. It's kinda between him and the OSU Ward kid.

I stopped putting any faith in these mental midgets when they dropped Desmond King to round 5 or whatever. There was a enough tape against top receivers in game situations...to justify a 2nd round pick on Desmond at the latest. The Los Angeles Chargers thank them every day.

Not disagreeing with your assessment necessarily. Just a reminder, Ferentz said he could literally probably start for half the teams in the league at guard next season. His evaluation means a lot on oline.

I don't doubt that either. I just think that he's a little undersized since you don't see many guards under 310, and generally the center position is where you try to put some brains. Daniels has plenty of that and I think he'll do well wherever he ends up.

Washington would be a great fit. Put him at center next to Scherff. ;) And to take that the next step further and they can draft Wadley. They already have Leshun too and it'll be like their putting the gang back together. Brothers together again.

I'd rather root for that team than any other one on the east coast.

I wrote that not knowing where they even pick. I just see now they are picking at 13... So way too high for taking him so unless he drops to the 2nd round I don't see it happening.

JJ will not slide that far, unless as others have pointed out that he struggles at the combine. And if he does slide that far he isn’t going to the Steelers. The Steelers have more pressing needs at inside linebacker and safety. If Le’Veon Bell leaves in free agency they will be looking for a running back as well.

The other JJ(Josey Jewell) has more of a shot being a Steeler than Jackson does.

Not going to rehash the leaving early debate again, give scouts/teams opportunity to nitpick and they will. Teams want labor as cheap as they can get it.

Unless JJ really opens eyes at the combine, I would expect Ward to be the first corner off the board. He has insane natural athletic ability. There's a couple of other corners that are in the mix in the first as well, such as Hughes out of UCF, and another out of Colorado. It will be interesting to see what order they go in after Ward. If JJ runs a sub 4.5 40 I think he has a good shot to be the second. If he runs above a 4.6, he could be the fourth. It's tight.

A lot will depend upon what defensive scheme a team runs. For example, JJ would fit perfectly in Seattle's defense, so I could see that happen at 18 if he's still there. If I had to guess right now, JJ is probably looking at 14-24 in the first.

Charlie Casserly has both JJ and JD going in the first. Buffalo with 22nd and Tennessee with 25th.

JJ 3rd CB behind Ward and Hughes.

Some NFL analyst named Daniel Jeremiah has the same exact predictions as Casserly re the Hawks.

I don't normally follow this very closely so I did some research. Who were the last Hawkeye players selected in the first round in the same draft? No cheating!
