Didn’t get to watch live but just watched this morning. Here are a few of my takes.
The good:
The freshman were as good as advertised, probably better!
-Nunge, at close to 7’ hitting 3 3s and moving his feet like a 3/4 man. The announcers said Fran mentioned there was a chance he could be a potential starter at 3 if Baer went to the bench.
-Garza, started slow but he just always attacks the glass. He missed a few bunnies that he normally makes, he makes those and he probably has another 18-20 point night.
Iowa’s size is going to be a huge advantage. We have 6 legitimate forwards that can all play. What I liked was they are all looking for the kick outs to shooters when their shots aren’t there. The inside-out game is winning basketball.
It appears to me, and this could be over-analyzing, but I think Fran has a pretty good idea of the rotation settled out, and as many have guessed Dailey and Uhl might be the odd men out. If Cmac does indeed pull the redshirt, I see us at 11 deep, but the rotation will be a lot easier to manage with Nunge and Wagner’s ability to play 3, and Baer’s ability to give us some minutes at 2.
The bad:
Perimeter defense appears to still be an issue for this team. As much as it pains me to say it, we are probably going to have to embrace the zone this year.
