Re-watched the Exhibition

Didn’t get to watch live but just watched this morning. Here are a few of my takes.

The good:

The freshman were as good as advertised, probably better!
-Nunge, at close to 7’ hitting 3 3s and moving his feet like a 3/4 man. The announcers said Fran mentioned there was a chance he could be a potential starter at 3 if Baer went to the bench.
-Garza, started slow but he just always attacks the glass. He missed a few bunnies that he normally makes, he makes those and he probably has another 18-20 point night.

Iowa’s size is going to be a huge advantage. We have 6 legitimate forwards that can all play. What I liked was they are all looking for the kick outs to shooters when their shots aren’t there. The inside-out game is winning basketball.

It appears to me, and this could be over-analyzing, but I think Fran has a pretty good idea of the rotation settled out, and as many have guessed Dailey and Uhl might be the odd men out. If Cmac does indeed pull the redshirt, I see us at 11 deep, but the rotation will be a lot easier to manage with Nunge and Wagner’s ability to play 3, and Baer’s ability to give us some minutes at 2.

The bad:

Perimeter defense appears to still be an issue for this team. As much as it pains me to say it, we are probably going to have to embrace the zone this year.

Perimeter defense will be a weakness for at least a couple more years. Every team has a weakness tho. I'm hoping help defense becomes a strength to counter that weakness, and I think it has a chance to do it.

There were some quicker rotations that led to blocked shots last night, which was good to see. I think with the additional size we’ve got now it should help mask some of that weakness.

I am hoping we can make a high percentage of free throws...which are uncontested gifts...and often hamstring Iowa's greatness...end of game important free throws especially.

I think Iowa is going to go to the free throw line a ton this year, with all the bigs they have. The key will be knocking them down at a higher clip than last year.

Agreed. If you are going to be playing lots of zone, having length/wingspan can do wonders for rotating and closing the gaps when offenses reverse the ball.Think Uthoff and all of the blocks he had on jump shots simply recovering and getting a hand up.

If I were one of the Hawkeye opponents, I would certainly be concerned by Our shooting beyond the arc.....

Bohannon, Moss, Baer, and Ellingson all can nail the three.....

Garza, Kriener, Connor and especially Nunge are rather tall and can nail the three.....

Nunge, Garza, and Kriener on the perimeter will draw the interior defenders out, opening the middle for Cook and Pemsl to operate.....

We could be a nightmare to defend.....

Our D looked much better the last 17 minutes in the second half, the score was 57-51, Jewels ahead. Hawks held them to 30 points the remainder of the game while we scored 54 points in 17 minutes.....

The overall improvement from first to second half was very good for an opening exhibition game.....

I was really impressed with Connor McCaffery. He was very composed and sure-handed with the ball. Seems a natural point guard, and gives Jordan the opportunity to play the two. Connor's threes will fall as the season goes on.....If he decides not to redshirt that is.....

I really liked what I saw, and am even more excited now. Loved the Hawks sharing the ball. We had 23 assists on 36 field goals. That is outstanding and makes us very difficult to defend.....

Bring them on, one and all.....

The bigger they are the harder they Will fall.....

Exhibition games should be considered as much - I wouldn't read as much as some people are putting into one game - MSU struggled in theirs as well, I am sure they aren't ready to pack in the season just yet. I was encouraged by a lot of what I saw, and again, I think we've upgraded our back up PG spot.

I didn’t worry so much with the score. Iowa missed a ton of bunnies early.

I do think you can take away some things from the contest though on the starting lineup, rotation, and skill sets of players.

I was really glad to see Nunge knock in a couple 3s. His shooting form and release are really good and we kept hearing that he had that range, unfortunately in PTL and the overseas trip he just wasn’t making them. Hopefully he continues to shoot with confidence out there and can make them at a decent clip.

I also thought the spacing on offense was fairly good even with the 3 big lineups. Early in the game I saw Garza catch the ball out at the 3pt line and make a nice post feed to Cook. I think when we play with big lineups our spacing can be pretty good as we have a few bigs who can shoot mid range and out to the 3 (Kriener, Nunge, Garza), and all of our bigs are willing passers.

Oh absolutely - I just think it's funny when people are caught up in the score, make dramatic statements about lateral quickness & season long defense issues that loom and start tempering the season predictions off of 1 game exhibition game. I think you can definitely read between the tea leaves on line ups - who's gonna play and sit - etc.

I am just downright excited for this year. Mostly because even if we fall short of the sweet 16, we lose no important pieces through graduation. Then we add the best prospect in a decade. Iowa basketball is on a voyage to the stars and now the cheaters are all under scrutiny. Yay!

Iowa's team length as a whole is going to end up causing opposing team fits once Iowa gets a few games under them.
