Yeah and no. The first half was pretty bad. I think we gave up 47. I'm guessing they got their asses chewed about defensive effort, because it looked much better in the 2nd half. They only gave up 34 in the 2nd half.

deano, you were at the game? How did Garza and Nunge look, athletically? on tv they both looked like they were still a bit awkward, tripping over their own feet, etc. Beyond that, Garza is gonna be a monster rebounder as he appears to have a 9 ft wing span and Nunge looks like he's just going to dominate offensively. Neither will do that this season, I'm looking into the future, but I was impressed with both.

I wasn't at the game, I just watched the stream as well. I agree about Garza, he kind of has a goofy looking running style to him. I don't think that will limit/hinder him at all. Nunge really impressed me. I had kind of lowered my expectations of him with the Europe trip, but maybe I shouldn't have. I didn't think he looked awkward at all. I just think he has a bit of the Fr. look to him, and the game will slow down for him eventually. Kind of like how Cook/Pemsl fumbled the ball way to much last year. Speaking of Cook/Pemsl, It still just looks to me that they can make such quick moves that they just can't keep the ball with them all the time when they make them. They will get that worked out, they are still really young.

I was at the game. They both look very solid as freshman and have a great nose for the ball and space. Garza is a mismatch problem. Both can go inside and out. Nunge can hit a nice consistent 3. Both look to be the foundation for the future, which I texted my wife. Nunge is one of the most efficient players I've seen as he consistently (Euro trip) scores more pts than minutes he plays. They both are busy bodies. Garza had a better 2nd half than 1st.
If I had to start a team and had to choose from the Iowa roster, Garza would be the first player I would take, yes, over Cook. Jo Bo was very solid. I worry about point depth now as Williams left the program. There are only two so I think Connor has to play as a true freshman. Not sure what other choice they have. Very thin at point.

I watched the game as well.
Hard to draw any substantive conclusions from an exhibition game, but, yes, the defense was sub par, especially prevention on dribble-drive and transition. Both were issues last season as well so and were to be points of emphasis during the off-season, so that's a little disconcerting. We just don't have much athleticism on the perimeter, so rotational help is going to be very, very important this season, especially with Ellingson getting more minutes.
Other takeaways:
Cook has some work to do. He still doesn't understand how to play under control, and also his conditioning needs to improve. He has all-league talent, but he needs to learn how to harness it.
Pemsl has lost weight and looks very good.
Baer looked kinda out of sorts. Can't put a finger on it.
Kriener is the most under-appreciated player on the roster.
Nunge is a future star. Think of a larger more assertive Uthoff.
Uhl and Wagner are, well, Uhl and Wagner. I don't see either getting big minutes this season, particularly Uhl.
Would have liked to see more of Dailey. Not quite sure what to make of him yet. He has an old-school look about him.

The defense has me worried, fast athletic guards are going to give us fits this year. Especially at the point where Bohannon cannot keep up with anybody. Big mistake by Fran not bringing in a true PG for this season. Our guards can score but they cannot defend.
But underneath the basket, we have A LOT to be excited about. Cook, Garza, and Nunge were all dominate as they should have been and if Kriener can knock down the 3 consistently he will provide matchup problems for opposing teams.

thanks deano. Okay, we can agree to call it FR look. That's what I meant by awkward. Re: Cook/Pemsl, they look like they either think about it too much or they go too fast. They need to just play and play with instinct and that will take care of both of thinking too much and playing to fast. Relax and just play.

thank you mel. good point about Nunge being efficient. Agree w/CM. I think it's almost mandatory that CM hoops it this season. I like he and JBo on the floor (assuming CM's jumper becomes true). CM missed all of his jumpers last night, but he was wide open on all. If he can hit the open jumper then how does a defense double JBo? Yikes.
If Fran would have brought in a defensive minded guard (we had one he just left) he would have had to pass on Nunge. No way he should have done that.
I think we will have two or three freshmen playing a lot this year, which will again make the defense suffer. The good news is, the floor the defense starts the year at will be higher than last year and the ceiling they end the year at will be higher than last year. Not to mention the offense will start and end better too.
I think the team that played last night, without improving at all over the course of the year, is good enough to win 20 games. If they improve at the rate last year's team did, they can fight for 2nd in the conference.

I don't get what happened with CW, he left a huge void by leaving. The timing of this makes me speculate there is more than meets the eye. That's now a scholarship Fran could have used to bring one in and now it's too late.

He could've brought in that quick true PG in the '18 class, instead we got another shooter and I'm not talking about Wieskamp.
I think it makes perfect sense. He tried his ass of to become a rotation player up until the last second. Once it was obvious it wasn't going to happen, he moved on instead of wasting a year. If he left at the end of last year, it would have been without even trying.
He could very well be pulling a Ferentz and making sure his kid has a spot with no competition. It would be hard not to do that as a dad. My opinion is he thinks the 1 spot is in really good hands with Bohannon and Connor.

Yeah I saw Fran turned right around and gave that scholarship to that kid from Kentucky. He's listed as a SG but the video's I see he plays like a post player. Hopefully he has enough athleticism to play on the perimeter.

Fran probably had his son backing up the point guard position. Its to bad he got hurt and missed so much time.
Defensively I don't think Fran took the other team that seriously. The better they did in the first half the more Fran can work with them in practice.
