NIT Crowds vs. Regular Season

Eventually someone has to say it, and the AD can't be so stupid that he doesn't realize it:

Iowa's lower-row season ticket holders are hurting this program with their presence at games. The knitters and old farts have to be moved back. If they complain, screw 'em. We cannot keep giving up HCA because of a bunch of blue-hairs.

They need to figure out a way to make some luxury boxes in Carver to accommodate the blue hairs that donate a lot of cash. That would open up courtside for students

Iowa again showed it’s one of the few Power 5 conference outposts where the NIT isn’t regarded as containing high levels of toxicity. Here are crowd-counts at some of Tuesday’s first-round NIT games:

Georgia, 5,533. Illinois, 4,719. Utah, 4,097. Alabama, 4,041. California, 1,778. Wow. Or rather, the opposite of wow.

Indiana was seeded to host a first-round game, but declined and voluntarily traveled to Georgia Tech (and lost) rather than have an ESPN audience see wide swaths of empty Assembly Hall seats. Weird.

I sat down low for an Iowa-ISU game many years ago when Iowa won on a Rodell Davis tip-in (if I'm remembering it correctly). I couldn't believe how loud it was down low. I can only imagine what it would be like if the entire student section was down low.

Not completely surprised the first games at other places had poor attendance. I suspect that numbers would go up as teams continue in the tournament. It's always call to plop down the $$$ on a first game or wait when it gets more interesting to invest. It's the proverbial judgement call and people would often times rather pay for games against tougher competition. It the team loses the first game, people would then say at least I didn't plop down said $$$$ for the team that wasn't going to go very far anyway. That kind of what happens with NIT first games. '

I suspect the 2nd round games will creep up to the 7,8 or 9,000 range.

I can't go along with the whole students thing because there weren't any students at the game last night...it's Spring Break. The students have ample opportunity to go, and a decent amount of the time they don't. Maybe they'd come more often if it sounded like last night's crowd. Fix the old farts first.

Watched 2nd half and thought there were a couple of shots at stands. Students were there.

I'll be curious to see how the 2nd round attendence will look in Carver. It's a Sunday evening game with a decent start time against a B12 opponent. I remember how many people showed up for the 2nd round against Stony Brook, it was close to a sellout.

It seemed like the crowd was loud and active for the NIT game. The students need to be on the floor.....

It was at certain points when Iowa would pull ahead by 3 or 4, crowd would get amped up and people standing, then freaking SD would come down and hit a 3 or answer. That would periodically happen.

I think it will sell out.

As an "old fart" I tend to dislike being grouped with those who must be "moved back". However, a young persons game needs young support, so in this case, yeah, we need loud students down low. Just dont ask me to give up my seat on the bus..............

What was the attendance last night at CHA? I was thinking when Iowa got the #1 seed that NIT was probably thrilled as Iowa is going to get a good crowd and sell tickets and they are hoping for three games, I'm sure. It will be interesting to see some of the smaller schools that pulled off upsets...if they get to host at some point...that would be a tough place to win. Their crowds would be going crazy.

Article I linked before said 12,864 for last night's attendance.
