Great Win

Iowa played a great second half. The freshmen are really playing well. Sunday will be fun....TCU is good but the Hawkeyes should be jacked up for another game in Carver

The first game is often the most tricky. Unmotivated high NIT seeds do lose with regularity. Iowa did not do that. I am hopeful......

The Hawks did not play great. They played just good enough to beat a very bad team. I hope it's all out of their system and stomp all over the frogs.

You guys need to work on correct adjectives.

Beating South Dakota at home is not a "great" win. They did "win."

Iowa did not beat "a very bad team." They did play "just good enough" most of the game.

Survive and move on.

Jeeze you guys. A win is a win. No worse than clobbering some directional school in the pre-conference.

Let's be happy with a win and not a BTTesque flameout.

I like most of what you said, but South Dakota is a decent team and I'm pretty sure they would tell you this was not their best game. Both teams were sloppy and often trying to do too much. We have a chance to improve; whereas the Coyotes are going home. I expect a better game against TCU.

Understand what you're saying but TCU is a lot better than the Coyotes. We won't get by with playing like they did tonight.

It was a good win that they earned because they shot the ball really well. But South Dakota came to play and took it to Iowa, I was impressed with how well coached they are. Their game plan was to take it to the hole on Iowa and it paid off with free throws, they also put a lot of pressure on JB defensively which forced quite a few turnovers. I hated to see Trey Dickerson get hurt but I was glad to see him leave the game as he was blowing by everybody and was in JB's face all game.

Iowa will need to take better care of the basketball against TCU and, hopefully, this hot shooting continues.

The Summit League Champ can beat most of the top 5 in the B1G on a good night this season... just the way the conference was this year.

We've seen Iowa play against every B10 team. If you don't think that was a pretty good defensive team, well, you aren't watching the same game I am. The pressure on the ball and the quick double of the post to take Cook and Pemsl away...pretty heady stuff. They were very well coached defensively. Certainly in the first half, Iowa made some unforced turnovers, but they pressured the ball pretty damn well...as well as any B10 team. Bohannan couldn't even get a 3 off in the first half.

Now, they fouled you on every play too...but if you are getting away with it, that's what you do. Bottom line, Iowa is showing growth. South Dakota tried to play Iowa like MSU and Illinois do...thuggery, grabbing, pushing, holding...and wear them down and frustrate them. It didn't happen last night.

By the way, people need to give Fran credit for how varied this team is offensively. They run alot of stuff...and they execute it very, very well. Think about this young team being able to build on what they are doing over the next four years.

10 of our 16 TOs came from our frontcourt players. Mostly trying to push in transition.

JBo only had one TO

Trey Dickerson was blowing by everybody? He beat JBo on the baseline for a layup and got a lucky block call on Jok in transition. Other than that he just shot and missed a bunch of jump shots.

I'll give you that they were well coached.

Let me guess. You are a "we need a true PG" guy?

I was at Carver and thought it was kind of sloppy game to watch. There just wasn't a good flow to their offense but they did enough to get it done. I didn't think they were going to get close to 90 pts. SD was a gritty team that seemed to have an answer with a basket any time Iowa was about to pull ahead by 5 or more points. They always seemed to respond with a 3.

I think SD played pretty good defense and think they generally were a pretty good D team which bodes well for Iowa going forward as I think they were a good first team to play. Iowa played better the 2nd half.

I then went home to watch on TV and it's really different how you view a game at Carver compared to watching on TV.

JB only committed 1 turnover because he struggled just to get open so he could even get the ball. A big reason why those front court players were bringing the ball down is because JB couldn't shake the guy guarding him. How many times did we see Uhl bring the ball into the front court? Do you see how many screens he needs to shake the guy guarding him just so he can get the ball? Watch him in the front court some time when he doesn't have the ball.

No need to get all defensive on JB, I think he is one heck of a player but a lot of people on here refuse to acknowledge his weaknesses. I've been very clear on here that I think Iowa needs a true PG. JB is one heck of a shooter and is a decent passer but he doesn't have the quickness necessary for a point to go to drive to the basket or guard the opposing PG.

If you didn't see how easily Trey was able to blow by JB then perhaps you should watch the game again. Our guards (not just JB) cannot defend anyone on the perimeter in man to man, the opposing guards blow by their defender and it leads to easy points in the paint when our post player moves over to help.

It's difficult to play against out of control chaos...South Dakota's style of play. Fran has said more than once over the years that he wants his teams to play fast but not crazy. I think SD played crazy and we got caught up in it at times...more so in the 1st half IMO. I expect a more "normal" style of play from TCU.

Jordan shot 4-8 on two pointers last night. That was the most two point attempts he had in a game all year long. So, I would say he actually drove past his guy and to the hoop more often than any game we have seen so far. A couple of the drives occurred when he was off the ball and Williams was playing the PG position, but Jordan was as aggressive as he has been all year last night.

Jordan also had 11 assists (career high). He also had at least 3 other passes to Pemsl and Cook that resulted in fouls on missed hoops that would have been assists if the shot had been converted. I would say that qualifies as better than a decent passer.

Finally, Dickerson was driving by defenders (including Bohannon) in the 1st half. He scored 10 points and was a tough matchup. In the 2nd half, when Iowa went to zone, he basically disappeared. He ended up 3-8 from the field. He had done nothing in the 2nd half (0-3 shooting, 2 turnovers) until he unfortunately was hurt on the drive to the hoop in the 2nd half with 8:16 to go. Iowa adjusted and was able to take away the drives from the top that were hurting them in the 1st half.
