Foul Management Has Changed Over The Years

Back in the day, well as far back as the 1980's and early to mid 90's, it used to be that the coach would only pull a player and sit the player after getting 3 fouls in the first half. This has since changed and now coaches are willing to sit players after only getting 2 fouls in the first half.

Are you losing too many minutes for your star players sitting them so long in the first half, many times the entire half? When you do trust your players to do what they need to do to keep from getting the 3rd foul and staying on the court? These guys have played a lot of b-ball growing up, including AAU ball.

The luxury of playing so many players such as Fran is that the coach can take the chance and play the player. Iowa can generate enough offense with a variety of players. I think a team like Iowa State would have to maybe protect the players more than a team like Iowa who goes 10-11 deep.

Anyway, just a general discussion about foul management in games.

I'm not a fan of sitting a guy the entire half for having 2 fouls. I can understand where Fran is coming from, though.

I think Fran would've put Jok back in if needed, but we were playing so well it wasn't necessary.

Right - everyone has an issue with Fran sitting a guy who has 2 fouls but IMO - it seems like most times when that DOES happen - the team builds a lead with them out. So, while I get it that everyone has a hard on for Jok, it's hard to be TOO upset if the team continues to build a lead with the player out.

I like Fran's strategy. I think you sit the guy with the 2nd foul automatically and keep him there for as long as you can.

With that said, I don't think Fran would hesitate to put a guy like Jok back in if the game was slipping away and it felt necessary.

With regards to the PSU game, Jok came out with 2 early fouls. Iowa went from being behind a few to up double-digits, so there was no need to put him back in. If they would have been down 10, then you put him in.

I've always thought that guys sit too much for foul trouble. Don't save them. If they don't foul out and are just as effective, then play them. Really a case-by-case situation. Let's say, for example, Jok doesn't play the rest of the 1st half and the game's close at half. He plays 15 minutes in the 2nd half and only picks up 1 more foul, but we lose. I say they wasted the time in the first half where he could have helped Iowa.

Honestly I had a bigger problem with coach putting him in to shoot those free thows late in the half after having sat all that time. He had to be cold & stiff. Should have let Jbo or Ellingson shoot them. If Iowa would have been struggling and looked to be on the ropes then sure maybe bring Jok back in. But having him sit till halftime was fine by me as it was.

So did I. After that miss, my wife saw on F-book where he fell below Alford for the season's best FT % and if he wanted to pass Alford would have to make the next 5 attempts in a row. Well, Jok ended up shooting and making 4 after that then was taken out before could get the last. I think he lost it by one made FT. Somebody could check those stats to see.

Postseason counts too.

The most foul management is by the BT officials. They need to restart the gene pool for these guys.

I don't know what's so hard about calling a foul on a guy that his holding the offensive player trying to cut thru the lane. College basketball would be so much more entertaining, like it was in the mid 80's to the mid 90's. But once the NBA started doing it, college basketball coaches started copying it and it has absolutely destroyed the watchability of the game. The game was meant to be free flowing and fluid and it's turned into football on hardwood.

Yea, they won't call that but they'll call a player doing a little hand check at the top of the arc which isn't obstructing the offensive play.

One thing I did like was Fran didn't pull him after he got his 3rd foul while he was on fire. He would normally take a player out in that situation where a player is on fire and the other team is on the ropes. it always bugs me when he does that.
