Connor and Patrick McCaffery got the best of fellow Hawkeye recruit Joe Wieskamp in Thursday's substate final. Here are some thoughts and highlights from Cedar Rapids:

Thanks, well done...

My comments on Wieskamp...

Has a nice lope and gait

Looks fairly strong

Impressed with his ability to use both hands off the dribble

Over a year before he hits the Iowa bb court...wow...

He reminds me a bit of Kingsbury...with more mobility...or Bobby Hansen...combo of both...?

Weiskamp really impressed me tonight. His defense was good in the zone. High BB IQ. Blocked a lot of shots. Conner tried to slow him down. The rest of Joe's team didn't do him any favors. Pedestrian would be a very charitable description of their play tonite.
And yes, Rob. You could use a hair cut and a shave. ;). Let that go another year and you'll be a good Kenny Rogers double.

The only thing Patrick is lacking is strength. That's why he shoots the 3ball so low. Other than that, he's eventually going to be a force, IMO.

Joe is going to come to Iowa and make an impact immediately as a Fr., he is that good. That is the year things are going to get very, very fun for Iowa basketball:

Bohannon - Jr
Cook - Jr
Moss - Jr
Pemsl - Jr
Baer - Sr
Ellingson - Sr
Garza - So
Nunge - So
Joe - Fr
Connor - So

I found it hard to believe Muscatine could be that terrible with a D1 player on it until I watched the video. Wieskamp looked good, I like his athleticism, but those dribble drives will be few and far in between in college. But the potential is there. Patrick needs some meat on his bones.

Dribble drives to the basket by Iowa players have been few and far between over the years...perhaps Wieskamp will be a treat.

Was impressed with Patrick though obviously needs to pack on some muscle. Wieskamp reminds me maybe of that guy Purdue had a few years ago but can't remember his name. He's gonna be special.

Wow Wieskamp is gonna be one of the all time greats if he keeps developing. High release on the jump shot, tough to block. Stronger and quicker Uthoff type player? Couple nice passes also and good ball handler for his size and being only a Junior. Really excited about this kid. I like the fact that he makes a great play and just hustles back also, didn't see any show boating.

Patrick has improved his strength and stamina lot in the last year. It's been a struggle since overcoming the cancer several years ago but he really made a jump since last season. I just added a few more observations about he and Connor to the story linked in the OP.

I don't like to bag on high school kids and won't single anyone out but suffice it to say JW could use some more help. West literally double him almost anytime he had the ball and sometimes brought a third guy. As you could see in the highlights, I added a few plays where he dropped a nice time to a teammate who failed to finish.

JW is going to be even more impressive when he has more talent around him. He can handle it, sees the floor well, has a diverse skill set and can defend.

The Muscatine kids played hard last night, they were just overmatched.

Depending on how well he plays defense, he looks to have the skills on offense. Good times for Iowa basketball for the next few years.

Two ways to break a defense down. Dribble drive for shot or dump off or spread the court with good outside shooters. Look at the roster that Fran is building. I don't think he's designing his offense around the dribble drive. I think he wants 4 guys on the court that can shoot outside and spread the court to open up the middle.

They will have guys that can get to the hoop with the dribble when they have to, such as end of the shot clock, but I don't feel the staff is designing the offense around the dribble drive concept. I like where they are going with the roster and play.

^^This^^. It sounds like if he wasn't triple and double teamed the whole game, he could have found 50 pts if he wanted. Fran's gotta be licking his chops getting JW. I can't wait until he signs and we can hear Fran & coaches talk about him. He has an overall game. I'm more excited about him as a recruit more than any other in a long time. Seems like we've been hearing about this kid for years. He just has a great overall game.

Fran's gotta love that his sons will be playing with him. This might just be the recruit and situation with his sons that keeps the McCaffery's at Iowa for the next 6-7 years.

Two questions Rob.

1) If you had to nit pick, what would you say JW needs to work on or what if any, is the weak part of his game at this point?

2) Do you think Fran sees Iowa as a destination job or eventually moving on if Iowa is terrific the next several years?

I'll just hang up and listen!

Agree with Fran's "master plan"....of shooters opening up the court...similar to Golden State...

Someone who can beat his guy off the dribble consistently and go to the hoop...is always a great tool...especially when the clock is winding down.

Patrick doesn't graduate college for 7 more years. By then, Fran will be pretty old to leave for a dream job. Especially if Iowa is the new Wisconsin by then.

There's not much. He needs to get stronger but he's only a junior so that will come.

It was tough to get a read on him defensively. Muscatine played zone. He did block a few shots, including a fast-break lay-up attempt that I captured on the highlights. I'd like to see him in man-to-man but he's a good athlete and long, so the pieces are there.

His three-point shot was off last night which led him to attack the basket. I think he wore down as well. As I wrote, West made him work hard and he played all but about the last minute of the game.

Not sure I'm picking nits on weakness but rather pointing out some things I didn't get an opportunity to see. I'm hoping to get out and watch him on the AAU circuit this spring and summer.

I'd just be speculating as I don't know what's in his head but based on observations and what I hear, he and his family are very happy here. They're very involved in the fight against cancer and the community as a whole. He has a daughter and a son younger than Patrick and I think they'd like them to complete school here. If I were betting, I think Fran will stay here as long as Iowa will have him.

I don't want Iowa to be a new Wisconsin in anything...

I would like to see the Badgers "wish" they could become like Iowa

My two cents...

Well, in addition, they have their youngest Jack still coming up behind them but there is a gap in ages. I know my boys have played youth basketball against him so he now is around 10-11 yrs old.

If I had to state a team Iowa may be replacing, I think they could become the next Michigan State. I think the style of play would mimic Mich State more than what Wisky plays. In addition, Izzo may be on the downswing of his career creeping closer to retirement, so Iowa could be the team on the upswing that gets the baton passed to them.
